Originally posted by Distopia and both of those games had playerbases of less then 200k at its peak. UO was a PvP gankers dream and it didnt even go mainstream untill Tramel opened up the market to the "what if we had a PvE based MMO" crowd. SWG was built around community because it lacked in every other aspect of gameplay. Playing a moisture farmer or a cantina dancer as a playable class all I can say is LOL. Sorry the majority of gamers want a combat centric game to play. |

Originally posted by Aerowyn Totally agree brought the fun factor back in being in an mmo in a group event. Funny though, the trash chat folks always find some channel (Map) to abuse, I didn't miss general. I just think the jerks are frustrated with the lack of griefing options in GW2. This beta more then the rest I'm having a great time, Only thing for me I don't like is the terrible lag, most of sat was fine though =) |

Originally posted by Distopia Bingo! GW2 is built around solo content especially the personal story. The longevity and social aspects of this game will be seriously lacking. Real mmos which I mean non theme park mmos do not lack community or social aspects. |

To those who are complaining that the game isn't social enough, please let us know exactly what you are doing to make it social ? It doesn't matter how many tools and opportunities a game presents to encourage social behaviour it still all comes down to the players willingness. GW2 provides plenty of opportunity to be social, as much as any other modern mainstream MMO, in fact the barriers to a social community have been stripped down even more, there is little to no opportunity to grief in PVE in GW2, same can't be said of other titles. Stop moaning about the lack of social play and get in there and create some, there's no shortage of opportunity. |

My beta experience is such that I haven't even been playing anymore until actual release because I'm afraid of burning through content that should be fresh and new for me as soon as August 25th comes. I haven't talked to anyone yet, but the biggest reason is that I tend to be more antisocial in MMOs when I'm learning the ropes, and this has happened in every MMO. Even moreso in beta, when I know I won't even be playing for more than a few hours. The people I meet wont be there tomorrow or the day after. When the game is released, when there's more permanence, when I'm comfortable with my surroundings and the levelling track I'm on, I will definitely be engaging with the people I'm helping and fighting alongside. |

Originally posted by grapevine What did you do in that other mmorpg? It is no different here. If you want to group then do so. It is way easier in this "community based game" to be part of an event than that other mmorpg. No mobs to steal, no waiting for a named to respawn because "that a$$hole" just killed him while you were working your way to him. No worries about gathering nodes because if it spawns in front of 100 people they can all take a chunk of it. This game makes more sense and if you want to talk to others just do it! :) Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

Originally posted by seraphol I agree with that because I'm the exact same way. Beta I mostly spend learning the ropes of the classes. I then settle in on a permanent server at launch where I know my character won't be wiped, I also get into a guild and become much more social all around. Originally posted by Aerowyn Me too! I'm an old man and I set limits on myself. First I told myself just play a human Warrior and nothing else. I broke down and decided to try all the professions to level 3. Now my girlfriend (yes old people have them) was watching me play and she bought it also, so I'm helping her get a grasp on a Sylvari Elementalist. She has never played an mmorpg and she is having fun and I am too! Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

At least this isn't a thread about someone hating a mmorpg for being a mmorpg. I get what he is saying. All I can say is, this is a modern mmo. The loss of community has brought about the increase in story and the solo experience. This is mmorpg gaming as it is today. And GW2 is about the best thing being offered. (I would say TSW, but GOD! The awful combat!) |

Really? I don't like it because it is a community game? Hmm. Why do I love Eve so much then? You know so much about me, so you should know right?
So let's see, I don't like GW2 because it isn't single player focused, because I am supposedly burned out, I am a hater, and I am an employee of Blizzard, Bioware, and Funcom.
Thanks for opening my eyes GW2 fans.

I will agree that in the common PvE aspect, i have yet to actually "have" to talk to anyone. Course, I don't actually have to talk to anyone in hardly any MMO minus whatever guild I am a part of. But i will also agree that the op is right. The more i play and the farther i go, people are talking more and more about events, meeting up to group up for some DE's and also joining up for some WvW fun. Of course, on the flip side, i have yet to be forced into a group. At no point did i have to find people to take down an elite mob or boss type character because my quest required it. I wonder about the people saying that this takes away the community aspect of the MMO. Do you mean that it doesn't force you to group up? if not, then what do you mean? As far as this taking away from the playablilty of the game down the road when DE's arn't zerged, have you ever played a game that required a group but because you started playing 1 year after release, there was no one in your low level area? DE's scale, mobs don't. Levels scale based on players in the area, so if mister lv 80 leet wants to come help me spank a giant crab in the starting area, its still going to be a challenge for him and reward him for his effort. I started talking to people after one of my missions in the sylvari starting zone because they refer to lovers as "partners" and it seemed like two of the partners were males. We then grouped up to rerun the mission with a new guy so we could figure out if the one laying on the group was indeed male. Best and most amusing converstation i have had in game in a while. Well, I liked some things in GW2. Like combat and art design. But many things made me quit beta before it was over. Bad textures and graphic engine, boring public quests (dynamic events if you wish), bland storyline and bad voice overs, lack of feel that you're in breathing living world (you feel like you just playing another game). Not major disappointment by any means, but GW didnt meet my expectations. |

Originally posted by EvilGeek All you can do is what has become the norm in the mainstream MMO, choose your table. IE: join a guild and make a few friends. This is how these games are designed now; it's not about a community coming together and building something, it's about devs building stuff to experience together with a "group" of friends. It doesn't mean they are bad games, it means they're built for something other than a true community experience. Player dependancy has been thrown out the window in favor of an environment where everything is obtainable on a solo basis. Convenience...

Doesnt matter if its "how it should be played" if/once many ppl start playing like that, it will become the norm and accepted. |

I do not like the cash shop. I know its not the worst one I have seen, but cash shops in any game are a real turn off for me. That being said I play TSW, but as it stands right now the cash shop is pure cosmetic ( i stil would rather it not be in my game at all.) I also play EQ2 on and off and really hate its cash shop.
