Release a game with a very large established fanbase from 10+ years of bnet history when the market was still emerging and the casual base had not yet been established, thus ripe for harvesting a momentious self perpetuating playerbase people never leave because they have X hours invested in their characters, and their friends and everyone else plays anyway. Not discounting Blizzard quality... but WoW's success is as much about perfect timing as it is quality, if not more so. - Derros |

Starting zones in GW2 IMHO are as good or better than any of the previous mmo's I've played:
Eq
Rift
Eq2
Warhammer (love the instant open pvp tho)
Aion
TSW beta
Didn't play aoc or wow past level 10 before losing interest.
There will never be a single mmo answer for everyone.
I love the graphic art in this game, was a big fan of Warhammer art also.

Best starting area in GW2 hands down was Azura for me love the race and love the animations they have . for a game with no monthly fees it's ganna be a day one purchase for me .

They made the game were people can rez each other. This encourages player interaction. They counter that with making it really easy to die. I actually like it a lot. Encourages a team effort against hardcore bosses and shit. I love it. |

Hmm, though I only got into the second zone PvE wise (didn't want too ruin too much for the release), I sort of agree. I didn't really follow this game super-actively before trying the first BWE, the game didn't even interest me that much. The first 10 levels or so only confirmed my disinterest: I was like "Is that it?". It was only through actually sticking with the game, seeing some of the bigger events, getting into the second leveling area and experiencing the WvW in it's full glory, that I was won over.
However, due to the enormous amount of interest generated by its predecessor and the look of the game, I don't really think it will be a huge problem for GW2 to keep players going for a bit until they reach the juicier parts. I also found the Sylvari starting area much more impressive than the human one up until now: a lot more boss fights and interesting things through dynamic events! |

I'm finding the Sylvari starting area to have a huge lvl gap from 6-8. It doesn't sound huge but try killing a lvl 9 with a lvl 6 or even 7 not so easy. Also I wish they would remove some of the mob killing exp penalty. Sometimes you don't feel like wandering around the same areas you've been 30 times to try to trigger stuff again. Not too mention it's cramped and not so much fun. Luckily people are saying it gets a lot better as you get out of these starter areas.

I agree with you OP. It really does get a lot better ~15-20+. I know they tout feeding cows and watering plants as part of their pacing design, but I honestly think it turns some of the more mature gamers off.
It's strange because later oN things really do get a lot more explorative and fun. At least for me. SWTOR is the greatest mmo ever! |

The norn area is probably the worst example, its much more sedate feeling, as are the stories found there. I might like it more after playing the other areas to the point of wanting that change in pace and atmosphere. We'll see. As for being too easy, I guess it depends on what you're doing. Killing mobs your lvl or lower? Fairly easy. Elite bosses in dynamic events? Much less so. Above your lvl? Much less so.

Tera had the same issue.
And i heard it's the same for ArcheAge, it's basically a quest grinder for the first 10 levels.
Honestly, i don't get it, if i ever wanted to buy Tera, i wouldn't like to play a game where it's basically impossible to die, the combat was the main appeal..... easy combat = boring. And ArcheAge... if i wanted to grind kill 10 quests, i wouldn't be playing a sandbox, just drop me naked in the middle of nowhere and let me build my own town with a couple of friends....

If its to easy for the hardcore players, it will suit the casual players just fine Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) |
