It's like a feeling of independing doom. A game that you've been following for quiet some time, hoping that it will reach shores translated and untouched breaks like a fragile glass upon the floor. This isn't the first time i've been following a game and it got burned by mush.

ArcheAge, more likely than not will be censored in the west the same way TERA was censored. It's unfortunate that games have to take a wallop from outside forces but there's too much finkyness in the gaming industry and they don't want to take chances anymore.

More than likely we'll see some badly done supposed "Modesty" wardrobe regulation issued like a strict Catholic school in 1950. The creature in the above link is defiantly some sort of feline monkey species but due to it's height it's more than likely to be censored exclusively.

When I see issues like this arise it makes me loose all hope for any maturity shown by NA publishers but as hay blown over at the slightest touch of a "issue" created by those who take fantasy far too seriously.  Which is why it is becoming an alternative route for me just to simply skip the "westernized" imports of games and just to stick to their original formats in their respected countries. The beneficial part is that updates come out immediatly when their released.

Until NA publishers stop juvunillizing every game they import anymore(besides turning it into WoW clones) and folks refuse seperate reality from fiction we will always have this problem and it'll always affect the games buyers choose to play whether we want it to or not.

Time for me to open up that foreign-language book and start studying again!

You know. It might be possible that they arnt "censoring" the game, as much as they are westernizing it. It could be the influence of some statistical sampling, about what western women think of the costumes. Is it possible that women want to use female avitars, that look like warriors and not strippers with shiny objets in their hands? I don't know. Its just a doubt or a question in my mind. I don't know enough to compare the cultures.

I am more than some of my parts

I don't plan on playing this game, so it really shouldn't bother me but I sure wish they would quit censoring games to market them in NA.  Put the appropriate rating on the game and leave it be.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I agree, localization is not the same as censorship. People throw the censorship word around a lot and it's starting to lose its meaning.

Is some outside force, forcing a change on the game makers? Then no, it's not censorship.

Are the developers making the game culturally sensitive? Listening to potential buyers? Then it's localization.

On that note, afaik the only significant "censorship" in TERA was regarding the very culturally offensive "little girls in bikinis" outfits. I'd hardly call that giving in to prudishness on their part since TERA remains little more than an erotic fantasy slow-mo FPS.

Why is it that fantasy trolls are vulnerable to fire, but internet trolls thrive on flame wars?

7/19/12 1:22:21 PM#5

TERA was censored because some of the outfits female toons wore were far to skimpy, and I have to agree with the censors about the Elin, even though I don't agree with how they went about censoring them.

I haven't seen much of the kind of stuff TERA had that was censored in ArcheAge, so I doubt it will be censored to as much as an extent.  Of course, upping the rating of the game should make censoring less of an issue.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

It's obvious that "localization" caters to a vocal minority armed with an agenda, and not society as a whole.  One look outside in an urban environment during the summer makes that extremely clear.

I think localization is different from censorship too.  Western games are localized for the East and sometimes even 'censored' in the West so that the East isn't offended.  The same is true for Eastern games to the West.

An example of Western censorship I can think of was Guild Wars and the panda ranger pet.  Players wanted a panda pet for their rangers, but Arena Net and NCSoft felt that could be culturally offensive (or even bannable) to China so they dropped that idea in favor of a more culturally sensitive gaming environment.

I see nothing wrong with that.  We all have to get a long and the price for greater homogenization is we give up a little to make life more comfortable for us all.

The only thing I don't like is when a game is localized to the degree it totally loses it's original flavor and style.  If I wanted to play that sort of game I would just play a Western developed game.  I like Asian games because there is a cultural and stylistic difference.

Strange. I can still go to Gamespot and pick up HyperDimensionMK2, not to mention listen and watch a bunch of animes such as Dance in the Vampire Bund, Chobits, Strike-Witches and MoonPhase as licensed entertainment in the United States of America. Yet none of these games or medias have been censored, or banned. Yet TERA has been censored for the same exact content substance as the following titles above.

I believe this is where Culturally Offensive is a term thrown over to wash that fact that these games and characters exist and they have been for quiet some time. Fan-bases and genres which have been deemed as "niche" by this exclusive World of Warcraft MMO publishing company (less than a year old) and to please those who have problems with fictional entertainment along(busy bodies, people who don't have a problem shooting brains and guts all over the place but the moment an anime character comes along they freak out. But at the same time it's still okay to bash and hit those "little girl" characters in their skulls and bodies with over-sized swords and axes and burn them with fire.) with the exclusive world-of-warcraft casual attitude that goes along with gaming.

En-Masse Entertainment wanted casual players from World of Warcraft to play their game badly. They wanted to those numbers. It's their competition So they went out there way not only insulting Otakus on a generally asian-created game themed around moe characters and elements often seen in anime and manga, but also made political moves and statements that could now possibly affect up-coming titles for the rest of consumers in society who don't drag real-life into their gaming/entertainment worlds. The "main-stream" North American companies are stuck in World of Warcraft mode. And whatever does not fit in that profit formula of Warcraft is easily discarded. Sometimes the companies themselves are full of politics or personal dislike. En-Masse Entertainment had made sure to chase off potential elin-players at any given opportunity as well. Hence removing and deleting all the elin topics on the forums at any time as if warcraft is the only acceptable way of gaming. They made it as if asian games are almost a mistake to exist while other game companies show a more relaxed attitude about asian games.

I wouldn't go by nessecarily what a MMO company has done to a video-game as the standard determination of what should be and should not be considered fictional entertainment.

Controversy has always arise in video-games. When Mortal Kombat came out parents were freaking how the game was "too violent" and were trying to get it banned. Now compared to current games Mortal Kombat is a joke. Even the current God of War franchise is being affected now.

Freedom of expression is inetiviable in this Country's Fondation. Take that away and it ends up affecting everything around it. Even with titles that have become cult-hits such as Madoka Magica simply because of the existance of the character.

You have people in this country that are still offended by homosexuals(Chik-Fil-A for instance). Does that mean EA must suddenly stop creating their games with these characters because there are those out there who'll be offended? What about those who are offended by the amount of violence in video-games? Should games stop being violent because someone is offended(no more blood, no more head-shots, no more exploding bodies and screaming npcs)? Should fictious Anime be banned or censored mindlessly because someone is offended(even with the standard ratings)?

No, it shouldn't just happen at the flick of a wrist. And MMO companies shouldn't be the determination of that as a whole.

I would learn korean and play on their servers with a VPN, but they shut the damn servers at midnight <.<

Anyway, I'm starting to like the game but if there is any sort of censorship I won't even bother with it.

Aion's disaster happened because of the so called "localisation".
Try to please non grind, pve, "Western Design" people with a grind / PVPVE / ASIA DESIGN by slapping dumb quests and restrictions over it? Way to ruin a game, and alianate the FANS of these games over here. All they did was to piss on both in the end.

TERA? Please, they did everything they could do to piss off loyal fans of the game.

When will publisher learn, your 10Million WOW cake does not like your game, you only dimish your own potential playerbase by pissing on the cake of the ASIA MMO lovers with your so called localisation.

(censorship, lack of proper events, live EVENTS, real life tie ins, Bands, music, movies, social platforming)

The day a publisher realises to rely on his strenght and support the game for what it is instead of trying to cather to the wrong players, cutting the game, giving poor support, which goes as far as quest names and dumb delayed cheap events, on that day he will have his huge playerbase here.

Archeage? My heart bleeds by writing this but, as far as i see, archeage needs to be another disaster sadly because every publisher still thinks only a boy dressed up as a girl will attrackt other boys and those will still stay once they realised what's going on.

I think its more likely the creature wil be censored because of the penis protruding from its forhead.

MMOs should be 16+ anyways, because no kid at an age below 16 should spend their time playing games on the PC. And once they turn 16 the kids should've learned all about sex, drugs and rock'n'roll anyways, so there doesn't need to be any censorship anymore.

WTB a sandbox mmo with WoW's polish.

I wouldnt care if you could only use stick figures, the features list and endgame to this title puts every game out now to shame (gw2 included). Seriously once this comes out here I see no reason to play my other American mmo's

There is just something jacked about censoreship regarding mmos and that fact that their played via the internet, the one place where censoreship can't be controlled.

If the have mandatory swear filters that will be pretty annoying but if all they decide to do is put more clothes on creatures that look like children then i really couldn't care.

Not sure why people get so upset that they wont be able see naked children looking things.

Censoring outfits/mobs has no effect on the actual gameplay and 99% of the players won't know or care about it.

And yes I'd hope they censor that character in the US release, that's just creepy.

The funny thing is that Tera has a rather large procentile of female players in the US.

Sorry but I'm not offended by pretty much anything (though I believe there is a time and a place for some things) and all I can say is that if covering up a character so you can't see the naughty bits or making it so that your avatar is not nude when you take off the clothes, is sending some over the brink, then there are larger issues to be discussed.

Somehow, I think we will all live if there is no nudity.

There are places you can get nudity and scantily clad pics. there are also games that deal, as a focus, with more sexualized subject matter.

If the developers cover up their characters then it's a shame but that's all it is.
