The good thing about indies is that they provide certain things that the big companies will not provide. Just like in EVERY aspect of life. The big companies innovate and so do the little companies. The ma and pa store sometimes offer products that big chains like target and walmart will not provide. Big companies and small companies both need to exist for a reason, but accusing the big companies for not taking unnecessary risk is downright childlike and shows the lack of real understanding. To conclude, indies need to exist to create the games that big companies are too afraid because risk != success. Once a good indie game comes out and shows the big companies "hey there is some interest in this genre" then the big companies will follow with a more polish and bigger version. |

OBVIOUSLY this game idea would not focus on the lowest common denominator, but I'm sure all the game companies with their plummeting stock prices are doing just fine making stupid games for stupid people. If you guys want to rant and rave how awesome Day Z is, then that's great and all but you are living in dream land if you think triple A developers, will start making awesome sandbox games because of the mod. Then again whom am I to tell you, there is no Santa Claus, you are free to belive what you want |

For the record, I don't play any MMO currently because they are all the same. Level to max then start the tiered gear grind until expansion then rinse repeat ad nauseum. Just because I want something else doesn't mean I have to drink the coolaid and play makebelief of how the industry works and what to expect from the next generations. I'm a realist |

If DayZ can sustain those numbers for 6-9 months and if DayZ can prove to generate revenue beyond an initial box sale then maybe it might prove a viable approach for a niche MMO. filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community. Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix? filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding. |

Originally posted by Loktofeit Exactly, having unique player adds is nice, but nearly everyone wants to try something different once! Now if DayZ was to hold down those players (which I doubt many stayed), then it would mayhap start a new trend in MMO gaming, but until then it's just a phase. Or better yet, wait til they add some micro-transactions or subscribtion to play....and then see where it goes.... |

I voted no, but truthfully i would say "Not yet"
Though DayZ is causing a storm, taking names, eating babies , whatever. the Game , despite 1 man a some change crew putting the Mod together. The current established companies will still cover their eyes and speak in their best Baghdad Bob voice to say "None of this is real".
More over, the Game itself still needs work, but for the recent interview of Rocket speak about adding more tools to his game to promote team work and balance out the Death Match "trust no one" mentality, the game can only go no where but Up; barring if no game threatening bugs/errors halts the games progress.
And let me touch on one important Keyword, "Tools"
SandBox's thrive on tools, and all sorts of tools. The More tools the better, esspecially if they are different from one another. Tools to find creative ways to kill and piss people off (Bear Traps, Barb Wire, Flares.....to bring zombies on victims location) Tools to build, To create one's Turf ( i.e. Fort Friendly, with their make shift Sand Bags Server UK 21) and perhaps invdividual tools to promote a playstyle ( Doctor and his morphine, a Mechanic to build /repair vehicles, a pilot and his heli, a Ranger skilled of his surroundings and so on) Mass killing is easy and can be done on cruise control, the bigger Challenge is creating assets that go beyond just player full loot From what i have played and seen so far, Rocket is on the right track, all thats left now is continued ambition, time, and "more" new up and coming people the share the same beliefs. |

DayZ's style works perfect as it is. The first initial play is a fear-driven survival frenzy, but after you know how to play and transition to a well-rounded player; the game becomes less about zombies and more about people. Permadeath is easy because all your items can be gained again within an hour or so for well-rounded players. The rest of the time is spent doing what you want: Finding better guns, banditting, ratting, base-building, car repairing. . . Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW. |

Sandbox games are to risky to spend a decent amount of money on, and all the people with the money care about is making more. |

just bumping my thread because of this link. http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/feature/6627/Michael-Bitton-Two-Failures-and-the-Sandbox-Revival.html DayZ has 1 million unique players now. So yeah, something is happening here. |
