Can someone explain to me what this game is really all about? Is it just a virtual world I can do anything I want in or is it like a WoW type game? Is it even worth trying out?

I wouldn't ask here, I would go to the Mortal forums and read for yourself then try the game for yourself. You will get nothing but biased opinions from this website and forums.

It is a much more harsher world than WoW, where anyone can kill you can loot all your stuff, with game being heavily PvP focused. The exprience is vastly different from WoW, both in good and bad ways. I would suggest you youtube some gameplay videos and try the trial so you can judge yourself.

Not trying to jump on the haters bandwagon BUT the Official Forums are so heavily censored its really pointless to try to garner any truth there... By the same token some of the hate over here is unfounded.

I will tell you my opinion. The game is very bad. The Features SOUND Fantastic, the Graphics are pretty good and on paper it is an awesome game. The ideal was SUPPOSED to be a sandboxy Ultima online type game in 3D and made for more modern systems and gamers- In reality it is broken, buggy, exploited and corrupt. Its a PVP deathmatch game with very little purpouse to p[lay if you are not a PVPO ganker who enjoys running around in a Zerg and murdering/destroying everything.

That said there IS some fun to be found in the game- But far more frustration and dissapointment.

Try the trial- Its free.

It's a Darkfall clone, but Darkfall is 10 times better

try the free trial, darkfall is the better game but they are different enough so that liking one doesnt mean you will like the other. Darkfall does alot of things wrong but what it does right it does well, mo has alot of good ideas but does them either ok, poorly or terribly. Darkfall will feel closer to wow but is more approachable. MO is nothing like wow in anyway.

it certainly isnt a darkfall clone though, they share very little similarites at all. MO is more of a uo clone and darkfall was supposed to be a UO clone until they scrapped the whole idea of a sandbox and focused on combat.

there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.

Its difficult to see any similarities with MO and UO. Just because there are 4-5 systems (and unfortunatelly not working ones) from the hundreds UO had that doesnt make MO a 3d version od UO in any case. Nor the fact that a terrible, clueless, non gifted child that wants to play "i m a CEO" game with his friends is claiming something like that.

I agree with this for the most part, but I can't see  how "Darkfall will feel closer to wow." I think neither DF or MO is anything at all like WoW.

If there is a free trial, go for it. You will either be totally enthralled by the  game, or run away screaming never to look back. I'm more on the positive side, but I just don't have the time it would take me to do what I would want in this game.

I think it's certainly worth a try.

Ok lets start with saying its a FFA full loot PVP game with some pve added into the mix. Now if you dont like PVP and you dont like the idea of being able to loose all your hard earned cash and items to twats that camp the noob areas then this game aint for you.. if you think you can deal with that go setup a trial account :)

Myself I think its a great game the melee combat is a lot better than Darkfalls but the rest of the combat system lags behind a bit thats for sure.. but its worth it just for the great melee fights :)

Its a hard game to start off with for the first few hours most people have no idea what they are doing and quit but if you push past this and try and learn everything there is to know about the game it actually turns out to be really fun.. Also remember to try and join a clan asap a lot of them will provide you with basic equipment and help you get to grips with the game.

Yes the game has some bugs but the game braknig somes got squished a long time ago :)

Also the main forums are really good for info and the devs are really active on there and reply to threads when they can..

Dont listen to the haters most are still jaded because of the bad release the game had.. give the game a go and remember the first few hours are hard to get through... Character development is pretty fast in this game, it wont take long to get to the spec you want.. character builds are another thing you need to take a look into as there are only a few different builds that are currently viable.. so do a bit of research before creating your character.

Basically you start as a newborn baby with the physique of a fully grown adult.
You start to learn skills (anything ranging from jumping and running, to smelting advanced alloys), you die a lot, loosing all your stuff, get stuck a few times, battle dumb AI and explore empty dungeons.
The game has more problems than working features. That being said, in my opinion, it is more of a sandbox than DF. You will either love it or hate it. I guess it's all about what you look for in a game. Darkfall is just an arcade deathmatch with a large persistent arena. I can hardly call it an RPG. What it does, it does good though, have to give it that. It just doesn't do much apart from that quake-like combat. MO on the other hand bit off a lot more than it's devs can chew. That combined with a lot of bad luck threw it in the state it is in now. Maybe the upcoming expansion will help, maybe it won't. Seems it will actually battle major problems, but only time can really tell. We have only dev hype to judge by, and we all know how that works.
At the end of the day, the best way to know is to try it for your self. Free trial is there, but be careful,  seems only the chosen ones can actually instal it. Others will be stoped by legions of errors even during the client updating phase.
If you do- get in with one thought in mind- "I need to find someone who will teach me how to play". This game is the definition of counter-intuitive.

to answer your question more specifically,

it is quite possibly the furthest thing from wow you will ever play mmorpg wise. Possibly further from it than eve is. You can max up to 11primary skills from any of the skills in the game and theres a hell of alot (probably over 2000 primary and secondary combined) and any number of secondary skills that your primaries allow. So you are essentially free to build your character anyway you want, from race and height to attributes physic and skills. Of course there are builds that work best which the players have discoverd. You can essentially do whatever you like and choose whatever path you want restircted by whats possible but the order you do things or the area you specialise in is available to oyu from the start and only decided by your skills and gold.

the game is an aqured taste, you have to set yourself goals theres no quests other than gm organsied events and no real sense of tutorial. Other players can teach you how to play but its going to be a slow process. the game is buggy and some of the mechanics take getting used to. Also the graphics range from above average to poor depending on the area you are in and the population is generally low until the awakening expansion or an event occurs. The game for me has offered me more longevity than any previous mmorpg i have played and this probably comes down to 2 things. 1 is its extremely quick to level skills and get some gold together once you know what you are doing and 2 the melee combat is my fav mmorpg melee combat system i have played, its a flawed jewel and is alot of fun once oyu get used to it.

there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.

You know whats so sad here (sorry for the derail)- That even those who love the game realize its broken and probably unfixable- But the choices in sandbox gaming limits us to either crap or puke- Take your pick.

MO makes me really mad because of what it was supposed to be vs what it ended up being... DF makes me mad because as stated, its an Arena Quake game and was also suppoed to be a sandbox.

I think MO gets the hate it does because  many of us had HOPE (remember the Henrik HOPE avatar? lol) that we would have the game they gave us on paper- And it just didnt work. Add some overhyping and unprofessional behhavior and you have a very jaded community of ex players bashing the game every chance they get- This included me at one time as well...

I dont hate MO, I mourn for the games of old remade with new Technology and fresh ideals. I dont want a zerg deathmatch and indie game or not I can only stand so many bugs and slow progress.

-Heres hoping the Xpac fixes the game (really) because every sandbox game that fails (regardless of the reason) means more theme park garbage on the Market next year.

Sorry to rant and derail.

To op:

It's more of a virtual world type of game, even though all the bugs and unfinished stuff severely limit your options. The devs are amateurs with grand visions and small means both money- and talent-wise, which means that while MO claims to be a sandbox offering total freedom, in reality it's a deathmatch with some mat and money grind on the side.

In spite of a multitude of implemented features such as fishing, cooking, alchemy, housing, thievery etc the game is strictly about PvP. PvE is non-existant due to poor AI and the world is barren and empty save for some bugged mobs idly standing around. Vets have huge advantages due to the inflated economy and the game's history of dupes and exploits (and horrible design decisions like giving people the opportunity to farm endless amounts of op healing pots for a limited amount of time), and of course due to the fact that noobs don't have a clue even about the game's basics (unintuitive controls and systems, no real tutorial, all info is found on forums and external websites) while most vets have griefed and ganked for years now and know all the ins and outs.

It's an unforgiving game and most people don't make it past the trial. Some fans like to claim that this is because most players are weak and stupid and expect handholding but in reality it's the game's own fault. Sandbox gamers flocked to MO in the beginning because it claimed to be a 3D UO, but 99% of those early players left before or right around launch - and they didn't leave because they were weak and stupid and couldn't handle a challenge, but because the game was a total mess. It stayed that way for a long, long time and while it's gotten better, it's still buggy as hell and most core problems and broken systems are still there.

In all fairness, MO can be fun for a while though if you're looking for something different and don't care too much about bugs. The openness feels great in the beginning, while you explore the world and your options - until you discover all the broken shit and the lack of interesting stuff to do. The game has some great ideas and in different hands it could have been a truly amazing game. Imo it's beyond repair now but of course it's not totally impossible that the coming Awakening expansion will turn things around.

I played it about 9 months ago, so I can't say if there are any improvements.

9 months ago it was unplayable.  I don't know what else to say, it was just so unfinished you could literally see strings of code coming out of trees and peoples heads. jk, about the coding.
