so i dl'd SWTOR for the free to lvl 15 trial. but upon launching the game from the launcher it CTDs every time. their forums haven't been that useful so far.

i have double checked and *everything* on my comp is updated and i am well within the hardware parameters required for the game. which are the primary responses the CSRs give to folks with this or any other problems.

i even launched from the FixLauncher.exe after shutting off all Startup programs in Windows 7. it did patch itself, but did the exact same thing.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know this sounds like a troll post but ...

If you done your research on this game you'll see that bugs and poor performance seem to be more of a feature than anomalies.

If you want to play TOR then this kind of thing and others you'll find out goes with the territory.

I can't speak out of personal experience, as I've never had a CTD with TOR, while playing from day 1 (lots of freezes, lag and kicked back to login, but never a CTD).

However, I've looked on the forum and these solutions worked for people:

Hey guys this is weird as **** but i can help yall get your launcher working again. Btw this is for Windows 64 bit users!! May work for 32bit as well!! Just Follow these steps listed below:

1.) Start menu then click the "Computer" Tab
2.) Double Click the "Local Disc C: option on the left of the screen when it opens.
3.) Scroll Down till you find the "Windows" Folder in the sub folders of the Local C:
4.) From there Scroll down and find the SysWoW64 folder.
5.) Inside the SysWoW folder there should be a SWTOR (Launcher) Icon. right click to run as admin.
6.) Let this update full yes youll get the usual Launcher is updating Please wait message. But this time it will go all the way through.
7.) If it stops while loading patch saying internet connection bad check connection just close it and log back in again.
8.) Once the launcher is finished all the files that usually go into the normal swtor folder are created in the Syswow folder so make sure you delete the old ones in thr swtor folder and drag in the new ones that were made in the SysWoW64 folder.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE TIME FOR PVP!! BTW Bioware for the 4 days i lost hope i can get refunded on those day

I had one when I reinstalled the game.  My desktop was set at a resolution that was unsupported.  I had to change a .ini file.  It was a simple fix.

Well it is trolling and nothing more. I had never bad expirience and neither my friends. This game is almost bug free now. Problem is somewhere else

i don't think that's too unusual of a screen resolution to have.

Regardless, try this:

1. Press the [Windows] Key + [R] at the same time. (The [Windows] key is the key with the Windows icon on it)
2. Copy the following in to the text box and press ok: %localappdata%\swtor\swtor\settings
3. Open the client_settings.ini file and ensure the following are displayed within, or edit/add if so required:
   • Fullscreen = false
   • D3DFullScreen = false
   • RefreshRate = 60
4. Save and close the file.
5. Start the game as normal.
6. Change graphic settings within the game as desired.

This sounds like a problem that has been around since launch - perhaps you are using an older installation of the game, from earlier this year / last year's beta(s)?

Many people were having a lot of troubles with this after launch, and customer service just ignored everyone, so we had to figure it out ourselves.  Pretty much the Crash to Desktop was happening because the patcher programming was shoddy and was thinking it had downloaded all the modules, when it in-fact had not.

After a day of blogs of trying everything to fix the issue, even going in to change the properties of files, screen resolutions in the ini files, deleting files, etc, the only cure that worked was to completely uninstall the game and then reinstall from disk or redownload from scratch, then use fixlauncher again.  After that, the patch packs got correctly downloaded and installed.

If that is the same type of problem, how disheartening to see that it was never fixed ...

Don't buy this game.    You will get the same canned responses as everyone else.   They will not fix your probems.

I've seen, in the forums, people posting all the things they've done from the other canned responses, state they've done everything from those previous canned responses, so 'please don't give me a canned response...'   

And getting a canned response with everything they did...    Even though they said they already did all that stuff....

People are just trying to help ... jeez

How is your reply helping? He wants to try the unlimited trial and obviously hasn't bought the game yet.

I had constant crashes to desktop too since beta. I had to go through disabling and closing out each of the programs that were running when I was trying to play SWTOR. It turned out that closing MSI Afterburner (a video card monitoring and overclocking tool) fixed the issue. I haven't had a single CTD since.

I've heard of a lot of CTDs on a variety of different video cards, so I know it's not specific to that program but it might be related to video card drivers or monitoring software on anyone with these CTDs. So I'd just suggest going through your computer's background programs, kill each one on it's own and run swtor, and see if it crashes just to rule this out.

Don't buy this game.    You will get the same canned responses as everyone else.   They will not fix your probems.

Most of the threads I've seen on these issues includes some people that tried someone else's suggestion and it worked for them. Maybe your attention span didn't last long enough to see it, but that is the point of these threads and the people that try to help. Eventually and ideally, the OP might figure it out with everyone's help. Acting like that is just a stupid process in your own ignorant, cynical outlook is your problem. The only 'canned responses' he should ignore is yours.

I'll be interested to know if you get this issue fixed.

Just an opposing comment on fixes... When I've had major problems I always was able to find help from BW on the forums. As a general statement, the game has no major bugs.
