people really dont know how much GW2 is important to MMORPG players. a good indicator is this site and hits. even without game release he already have almost the same hits that SWTOR in "1 Year Section" this is just crazy, 3M sell at December will gonna be very easy to reach, im pretty sure. |

even before GW2 preorders were available, analysts were predicting 3.12 million sales for 2012

I know next to nothing about GW2 and I'm not even going to buy it, but if it's polished enough, has a good endgame, the ride is nice and they can produce quality expansions with a decent pace, then I see no reason why it couldn't dethrone that certain game. And before someone points out that GW2 doesn't compete with p2p games, of course it does. There's only so many hours in a day. |

Wait... you couldnt "preorder" Aion 4 years ago.... not even in Korea.
Either way. Hes most likely refering to launch + remaining time till end of the fiscal year. Word of mouth will keep the sales steady for GW2. Thats the plan. At worst they are actually going to advetise the game for once outside of the genre. While overhyped trash brags with several "millions first day/first month sales" (aka preorders accumulated during months of hype and adertisement), yet doesnt sell shit due to negative feedback, broken promises, bad and cheap handling of the game and huge dissapointment like WoW Cata, SC2 or D3 which all fell flat on their noses. Massive hype, usal portion of false promises, huge sales and massive dissapointment once the player actually got to play them. I don't see anyway GW2 hits those kind of numbers at launch. Not even close. I don't think it will even break 2 million at launch. Having said that I expect it to hit close to that number over it's lifetime. |

3 million is obviously a modest estimate, I would not be surprised if they sell 5 million copies in the first couple of weeks. Just think of the following groups: -people who played GW1 -people who believe the big hype -people who are tired of WoW, SWTOR etc. -people who are disappointed by TSW or TERA -people who are stuck in Diablo 3 and look for something else And all will think: "Hey, there is no monthly fee, I can just by it and try it, maybe it's a good game."
I will have to work every day the last weeks of August (no, not the common every day meaning 5 days a week, I literaly mean every day) and in September I will be on vacation, so I will buy it in October. This is perfect, because such I can stick to the rule "Always wait till one month after release, before you by a new MMO!" Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. |

Originally posted by Nadia Unfortunately thats just barely above 3 years ago. Its not 4 years even if you want to round up generously. Its at best 3 years. Of course it was launched 4 years ago in Korea, but that and the preorders are two different things.. But either way NCSoft never reported more than 400k EU/NA "preorders" (and Korea didnt even have a "preorder" option). Only post launch sales at 960k. And they didnt accumulate all of those preorders in June 2009 either but not until shortly before launch 3 months later.
Unlike games relying majorly on hype and advertisment to lure in casuals from other genres or non-gamer and raise boxsales, NCSoft title have an evident history of remaining solid and successful games with few exceptions (ie TR), against all contrary claims and lies by random forum dweller. While overhyped games of other publisher like Blizzard are desperate to sell even half of their "launch records" (see SC2, WotLK, Cata, D3 only sold 45% more minus free handouts) within the next 3 -6 months after the hype and shiny cover faded off, all major NCSoft title like GW1 , Aion, L2, L1 all continued to double and even tripple the previous sales record within just 3 - 6 months. Thats real "word of mouth" not "word of PR deparment" advertising the game through all media channels. And we are talking about the Western market here. Apllied to GW2: If they already have 1 Million preorders now, and probably 1.2-1.5 Million at launch. Its nowhere near impossible they might sell 3 Million 3-6 months. there is no arguing "buy to play". this game is a bohemoth and it can't/won't be stopped. the rest of the industry is pretty much screwed. even if people don't like it, after going back to WoW or whatever game, they will realize how much those games pale in comparison and either come back to gw2 or quit mmo's til TESO comes out. |
