Just to correct one of the previous posters who thought Age of Conan had the worst launch so far, followed closely by Vanguard. I'm afraid that Anarchy Online still holds the title for worst MMO launch ever and while AoC had a shaky launch, Vanguard's was worse. It took Funcom two miserable MMO launches to finally learn their lessons and get it mostly right with The Secret World. |

Brad McHack is back to kick the corpse he left behind? Kind of twisted, ain't it? |

Free to play is great for casual players and lowers the barrier for entry. Why would anyone spend $15 a month on a game they log into a few times a month? Any MMO with F2P has a leg up on return customers because its so easy to start playing, or start playing again. There's a whole class of gamer who *never makes it to max level* in an MMO, and F2P is terrific for them. I played EQ2 to max level on F2P - it was great. If you're going to dedicate a lot of time to a game and get to max level, you should just assume you're probably going to pay for extras, amenities, features, etc. because you obviously have a high level of interest in the game. |

Originally posted by Vorthanion I'd say AoC's launch was much worse, because they launched with almost none of their advertised features working. Vanguard was buggy, but playable. Age of Conan was both buggy, and had no content. Anyway, this is the best MMORPG news I've heard in... well, the best news since the genre sank because of WoW.

Ah, good old Brad McQuaid... maybe the only person in gaming I've ever wanted to punch in the head. |

It's like the MMO Dev version of moving back in with your parents after you finish college, or in Brad's case junior college. |

Well, one of the big 4 to invent the genre anyway. |

Originally posted by Garvon3 You do realize there are other ftp games that have little to no restrictions that profit simply from fluff/cosmetic items from the cash shop right? As far as this being a muti million dollar mmo, that fact isnt validated through sub numbers. If your objective is a short term increase in profits, sure this will work. Im sure there are some among the 300 or so vg subs that would spend more money in the cash shop in addition to the monthly sub. If however you are looking to bring more subs in and actually <gasp> grow beyond the hundreds into the thousands or tens of thousands, this wont do it. If your objective is the status quo with no new content,no new subs,no new features,no new devolpment, but more money for $oe than by all means support this matrix. Trying to use the same basic restricted matrix as eq1/eq2 wont work. Both those games were already successfull to some degree and had constant updates, polish, and development without the burden of a terrible reputation. Vanguard has a negative image to overcome and a population that cant support itself longterm in addition to performance and bug issues. |

How many of you were there for the Hype and release of Vanguard? If you were then you know why Brad left, and you know why him coming back to anything is bad. Brad is a used car salesman, politician, and everything negative the represent with none of the good qualities. If Brad McQuaid says some good changes are in store, I can assure you they are good for SOE, or Brad, and not for you. Brad promised us the world and everything in it when he started working on this game, and assured us it was all that and so much more even up to the week before release. Then when they released a bug ridden pile of poo on us with only half the content he promised, he ran for the hills and hid out.
This guy deserves nothing. Not so nice guy! |

Here this is Brad McQuaids post on Vanguard after release. He admits he inflated the hype, then claims his writing style made it hard to understand that most of what he was talking about was plans for expansions. Then claims he only got in about 80% of the content he wanted due to dead lines, which is BS too because not even half of what he hyped got into the game, oh but wait, he didn't say that it would, he meant in the expansions right? No... Not so nice guy! |
