It is a lot of fun, but not for everyone. To enjoy the game you should probably be someone who likes to read. It would help if you like puzzles or riddles. It would be of great use if you are not lazy and don't tend to use cheats immediately. What I have seen in game so far are quite a few people who did almost no research on the game and are just spamming chat with requests for people to guide them through every quest/investigation.

This is a mature, thinking person's game. Please don't ignore that before buying. After saying all of that, it is the best gaming experience I have had in years. There are some really cool people playing too which definitely helps.

Yes I agree and I got stuck on a couple of quest but I figured them out on my own. I did see in chat people asking for help but I did love a lot of replies too "figure it out". I can see guilds or clans whichever you want to call them helping out others but I think that's where it should stay. I think those people will leave the game anyway so it will be more limited over time. I love the fact that I actually had to read the quest and pay attention. Sometimes i would hear creepy whispers and I would right them down just in case. This game is just crazy fun and I give two thumbs up to Funcom, yes I play AOC but this one they did right.

My thought as well, I can admit I'm slightly bored of MMOs but unfortionately some people waste their time here trolling those who do enjoy a game. Going on 6 months now without playing MMOs but TSW is keeping me interested...its just the box price + $15 sub + cash-shop thats turning me off

Just ignore the cash shop, I havent loaded it up once.

But people need to understand this:

Box sales and a sub are NOT ENOUGH to cover the development and operational costs (salaries and taxes especially) of a AAA, modern NICHE mmorpg.

The cash shop isn't funcom being greedy, its funcom trying to recoup their investment while keeping everyone paid.

Unless you have links to hard numbers, which I don't think anyone outside the top brass has access to, then this is just your optinion.  I think Funcon wanted to make a game that a lot of people would like and play. I can't see them thinking, "we won't have many people playing our game, but for those that do we will charge them out the ling-yang".

It isn't that you can just ignore it. A person has paid for the game. They are paying a monthly sub. To then have a cash shop with items you can't earn ingame, is simple greed. They limited cgen options to 'encourage' people to buy clothes and such (a perfectly fine thing in a ftp). They made people go to the cash shop to get their bonuses items for prepurchase to show them that its there.

If Funcon is making so little money that they must resort to these tatics then maybe they shouldn't have made the game in the first place.

Its an opinion, but an educated one.  Go ahead and try to justify how box sales and sub fees alone will be enough to turn an overall profit over the first year or two and Ill shoot holes through it easily.

But then Im note the one up and arms because I cant earn every last t shirt in game.

This is a misconception, TSW is NOT a thinking persons game, it's a reading persons game. None of the quests take any real thought, they are all pretty obvious if you read the quest and occasionally type in the odd key word into the browser. You don't have to be some kind of intellectual to solve anything, it's all quite basic really.

I love puzzles and riddles, i spent many hours when this game was originally announced trying to solve the darkdaysarecoming riddles and web search, THAT was WAY more fun than the pile of excrement they actually released, back when this game had an AMAZING community, which is long, long gone now. This is not the right game for people like me, there is little challenge in the so-called "puzzles" presented by TSW and this seems to be the major selling point of the game.

This is one of the biggest letdowns in the history of mmo's. For a game with such potential, a great concept, we are presented with a dumbed down commercialised bastardised version of what was promised.

TSW isn't a bad game, it's just not a good game either.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

I don't mind the cash shop because it doesn't effect the outcome of the game really. I mean some you have to buy things just to get through a dungeon D&D online for one. In TSW it's a cash shop for things you might want not that you have to have. I thought the combat was fast and fun, didn't have to wait for that big fireball to go off, stuff happening all the time..again awesome!

I have to disagree totally with you on this. If you don't have to think and figure things out then why are you using the browser? i never did and YES I did have to figure some things out, and I was a lowbie. Maybe you should look into the ARG and see how you do there before you think of yourself as some kind of brainiac. I've tried almost every mmo that has came out and all the rest are same same boring quest you don't even read, you get it and it points to the big red X and you kill 5 things and run back. If there is a better "thinking" mmo out there that your playing I'm sure I've never heard of it because all the rest are pretty dumbed down.

Keep playing korean and F2P MMOs then, TSW is a great game but we should a month or so, after people reach the endgame and play it, once the honey moon is over we will see how good or bad the game is.

I do agree with this part. Nobody knows the endgame yet and I hope there is lots to do. There is nothing more disappointing then to work your way all the way to the end and have to roll up another toon. I'm sure they will have updates and new dungeons as time goes because I think TSW will end up having more subs than GW2 (candy land).

I know how you feel but I think they have learned from AOC, yes I played it. This game is nothing like AOC and it's the first mmo I've tried that I can't wait to play. History: WOW 6 years ended my sub last year, AOC, DDO, WAR, AION, TERA, RIFT (best out of this group other than TSW)

It must be chafing the doomsayers something awful, that all their doomsday predictions about TSW has been proven to be without foundation in reality. Launch was as smooth as silk, people said it would crash and burn like other Funcom games. They claim that there are tons of quests that have game breaking bugs. I found one, MIB Vans, this was fixed the day before Official release date along with tons of other issues.

Like all good doomsday prophets they then move their predictions forward in time, "Just you wait and see, in less than six months this will be f2p". What is the point of all this, making guesses at something that might or might not occur some time in the future. It's ridiculous, that's what it is, if you make 100 predictions, some of them will stick, that doesn't make you a prophet.

The facts are:

  1. Funcom has gotten progressively better, AO was a disaster launch, AoC was much better, but it fell into the same trap that Bioware did with TOR, they misjudged the speed some people would race through their content. The Secret World has learned from both these launches, and it's launch is being hailed by many as the smoothest/ or as smooth as Rift.
  2. Most players are having fun in the game. People who like the approach of solving riddles are loving it. I myself had the most gratifying experience in any game today (that includes Single Player games), what was it. I sat down, and actually decoded the morse transmission in Dead Air. I had someone send me the morsecode in ..-- .-. format, and by using the morse alphabet supplied by the browser I actually decoded it myself. I dare you to name one other games that offers this kind of fulfillment to players.
  3. I also did Polaris today, one of the best dungeons I have played in any mmo. We did it with a PUG, and we spent about 1 hour in there, I got some great looking loot and battled some really impressive monsters, not 3 hours of bashing trash mobs to get to the single end boss.
  4. The lore in this game has me looking up all kinds of interesting tidbits, from discovering english 1800's poetry, to getting a new appreciation of Dutch painters. And there's all sorts of funny little moments, like when doing "Something Wicked" and you Google Larry Checkon (the man accused of murdering the girls), I won't spoil it but it gave me a really good WTF moment.
  5. To say that Funcom abandons their titles after launch borders on insanity. AO has just celebrated it's 11th Birthday fools, and they are still developing content for it, albeit at a slower pace with fewer developers, but calling Funcom a cash in and move on company is just wrong. They still haven't cancelled a single one of their mmo's, unlike a lot of other companies that I won't mention.

Now, will Funcom end the reign of WoW with the release of The Secret World, no probably not. It is more likely to be a niche game, alongside EVE and others, and that is fine. I think the community will benefit from being smaller and more unified. What Funcom does deserve however is kudos for being willing to deviate from the norm, experimenting and creating something that feels fresh and unique. And yes, TSW deserves a healthy subscriber base, making sure that Funcom can keep a good development team working on refining it and expanding it, I say this out of purely selfish reasons, I want to see where Ragnar Tørnquist and his team will take us next. Will it happen, only time will tell, my crystal ball is not giving me any solid reads.

Really loving the game -atmosphere, quests, fighting - the whole package.

Ofcourse there are some things that should be adjusted -but I`m sure Funcom will tune those small aspects to perfection.  The best thing is that they have plans for the game years ahead, and I`m sure players will stick with this game allowing them to fulfill their plans, using big resources on further development.

Love that TSW  is not made only for 14-16 year olds!
