today for the first time after one week of playing DayZ, i truly enjoyed the game cause i found a weapon, a hatchet! so far i was trying to survive searching every building (that i can see n dayz map website) that might have a weapon but nothing, after all this time i found a hatchet and it was a blast! until a zombie broke a bone of mine :P had no morfein so guess what... i think they should make a hatchet the standard starting weapon, helps you search areas better, dont get me wrong, i like it the way it is hardcore survival is now, but you know what? i kinda starting to surrender a bit, and falling away from the game, disappointed that the loot is so hard, but on the other hand the bugs with the zombies getting into buildings with doors closed was easy...pls fix that. balance it a bit. Anyways my point is that after i found a hatchet i played for an hour and a half and i had a blast! all this because of a simple weapon :P your opinion ppl?
Thanks for reading |

Originally posted by dinos_21 I actually felt this way a little bit after they removed the starting gun, I do agree there are still plenty of bugs, lots of bugs, that need to be addressed, broken bones, zombies not being affected by baricades, zombies rubber banding, going through doors and walls, not really clear logically why they spotted sometimes they spot you in illogical situations when the algorithm fails. But overall I actually adapted pretty well to the game, I found that cities are not very good to start off, its a massive gamble to go into a city and hoping to get equiped from nothing, I will do this but with the intent of only getting, food, some painkillers or morphine if I am lucky and a couple cans of pepsi or whatever so I can last until I find a canteen. Once I have a reasonable amount of basic supplies bandages, food, water. I will gtfo out of big cities until I am better equipped, barns, deer stands are much easier to scout when you are under equipped. Once I have found a reasonable amount of weapons/ammo I will look to create a equipment/weapon cache, be it a vehicle I will drive into a certain position or a tent, whatever I can manage to find first, I will then mark this remote position as my cache position, put a backup weapon, some food and anything I can spare that I wont need immediatly this will help me if I die and can't get supplies right off the bat a place to go to resupply. After I have accomplished this I can start being more selective and actually plan trips to specific places to get specific stuff or just try and find a cool weapon or more fuel/equipment. This has been extremely fun for me so far actually, and actually I find that solo play is much much easier than group play, I am not conditioned by others messing up, not to say I dont play with my friends but I always try to push for a subsistence, low risk initial strategy that pays off in the long run.

This game is great, my third day playing this was when I finally started getting guns, food, bandages. I found it best to spawn near The factory there's a food market when you first get in and north of that is some big factory buildings with guns in it. Now all i need to find me is a vehicle and I'll be set. |

The pending 1.7.2 update fixes a lot of these issues. It's been delayed for a bit because of the recent DDoS attacks on the Hive server but they seem to have it under control now. Be patient and the game will get better.

so you mean that if you have a tent and store staff inside..even if you die you can go to that tent and access it? does everyone have access to your tent? |

Originally posted by dinos_21 Yes, anyone can access any tent so if you have one put it somewhere far away from any high traffic areas. Most try to put them out in the middle of nowhere for this reason. Of course no matter how hard you try to hide it there is always a chance of someone stumbling across it. Also if you find a tent out in a large open area use extreme caution. A lot of bandits use them as bait.

It doesn't matter if you die the items are still there because once they leave your inventory they don't technically belong to you exclusively anymore.

Hmm As for hatchets I find them plenty of times, probably more than can food. What's harder to find are guns, but by playing often you get an idea of where they can be. I've been alive for 2 days and have run across so many weapons, now that I have a map and pretty much scouted a whole area the next time I'm there I'll know where to go, it's all a learning process. What I don't like is that marking stuff on your map also marks them for other people. Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more. |

I'll give you a few tips.
Keep hitting respawn until you spawn at Kamenka or Komarovo. From there you have two choices. Either head north (opposite direction of the beach) until you hit Zelenogorsk/Sosnovka. Both towns have supermarkets where you can stock up on drinks and food, possibly matches (used to start fires for cooking your own food), hunting knife (used for gutting animals for meat) and a gun. Might even get lucky to find a better backpack and a compass. Second choice is to head east instead and head for the airstrip at Balota. The first aid tents are between the waterline and the airstrip. It has 4 deer stands that often spawn weapons such as the AK47 and other goodies. Then head north for supplies on the previous mentioned two cities to stock up on food and drinks. Check every barn you see as they often have both guns and hatches.
If you feel particularly bold then once you are stocked up, head north east to the international airport. Careful around the firestation/control tower/hangars as they are favorite areas for snipers to have their fun. If you approach the airfield from behind and ninja your way to the barracks, you can get lucky with some military grade equipment. NW is crawling with bandits however so you have to be sneaky and not get caught in open areas. Assume everybody you meet here is hostile more so than anywhere else
A few don't's I learned the hard way 1. Don't stop halfway on a ladder then decide you want to crawl down. You will break your legs 2. Don't put rifles in your starter backpack. It simply disappears 3. Don't swim in water. You lose your backpack forever |

well i found 2 rifles but no bullets, so i kept the hatchet since you cant use the rifle to just hit the zombies, unless there is a way and i dont know about it, but all this info i got from here now helped me lots, i had food, bandages, painkillers e.t.c but a zombie broke a bone of mine and had no morf, so i hide all my eq in a place, respawned and went back to get em ;P that was awesome! |

Here's what I do a lot. I go to Cherno and hit the apartment buildings. I have yet to see anyone at the apartment buildings and they can be so lucrative. They often have pistols and rifles on occasion. Plenty of bandages, food and water, matches, bino's, hunting knives, and backpacks if you are lucky. I've even come across a tent there once. Since there are five apartment buildings, there is a big chance of stocking up very well.
There is also a hospital right next to these buildings. You should get to the roof and take a blood bag, morphine and anything else that you think you'll need. If you don't plan on playing with people and space is an issue.. blood bags may not be that important.
After that, I'll start to head north. There are quite a few towns with barns and stables. These are good for ammo, food, water, and rifles. Keep in mind that most houses are not enterable. Once you find one that is, remember what it looks like, because if you see it in another town, then you can probably enter that one too. There are two, two story red brick buildings that you can usually enter. A brown small building. A yellow building, single barns, all long stables, and most warehouses are enterable. There are also some others that are enterable, but they are far more dangerous because they are located in cities. There are some smaller apartment buildings, some sort of police type station, firestation with a tower, churches and supermarkets. While they may have some very good supplies, they are hot spots for other survivors and bandits. Not to mention Zeds.
I'll often circle my way around Novy Sobor and Stary Sobor. I'll take a look near the miliary base tents if I feel that it's quiet. Be alert here though, as bandits will occasionally camp this spot. You can find some decent military weaponry here. Nothing truely amazing, but much better than your standard rifle and pistol, that's for sure.
At this point, you are farily close to the NW air strip and you have a decision to make. You can head east, ideally making it a bit more safe for yourself, or you can try your luck at the barracks and hangers. They are often swarmed with bandits. I usually head east, closer to Berezino. The airstrip there is a little quieter.
My suggestions are to stay out of the big cities at all costs and do not trust a soul. You don't have to kill everyone you see, but you need to understand that if they see you, they might kill you without thinking. I really hope they put the bandit skin back in the game for this reason. At least you'd have some idea of who is hostile and who may not be. Even without spawning with a weapon or food/water, you should survive long enough to hit up a few barns/stables on your way north.
So, if you see me.. please don't fire at me. My name is '[BBG] Halarr' in the game. I have good aim. =P
And for goodness sake! Stay off the roads! |

Originally posted by DAS1337 Hitting a bit city to begin with I find it very hard, specially if you got to a Veteran server, its ok to go and try and find your first set of equipment and if you die on the way just respawn, the hardest bit is if you miss a good weapon or just stocked up on medical equipment for instance, you are only missing a weapon but its pretty damn hard to get out of a big city when you have no way of defending yourself and you dont want to loose all of your equipment. Specially if you get Zombies you cant shake off. which does happen.

Here's what I do: Try to spawn anywhere East of Elektro on out to Krutoy Cap. Then I make my way to Rog Por just NE of Kamyshovo. It is a castle that is easy to sneak into and it usually has some sort of gun there. Be sure to check the keep and the building outside of the keep that has exposed wood stairs. Also don't forget to check the small room at the gatehouse of the castle. Then I head NE and hit up some of the local deer stands and med/high value farms. Then go up the coast to Berezino and go to that hospital to stock up on meds and then hit grocery store(s). You should have an upgraded pack by then and good civilian guns or maybe got lucky with a military weapon spawn at one of the deerstands. Then you can head up to NE airfield if you want.
From my experiences, the East coast is pretty vacant from players. I hear that most vets PvP around the NW corner so I tend to stick around the NE away from vets and newly spawned players on the South coast (that have less to loose in a fight). |

Originally posted by Blitz555 im gonna be honest I have never been to the NE coast, I always stick to the West side of the map, the broken bones are the bane of my life in this game at the moment, I have been unlucky twice, now where I have been in a barn and had to on one occasion I knew I couldnt shoot so I use the axe to cut down a zombie, he broke a bone before I could kill him I had no morphine so no cigar, ended up giving up cause I was too far from anything to bother crawling for hours, the second time same sort of situation made the mistake of shooting, there were about 15 zombies around the barn which I didnt notice, ended up managing to get away even after taking a beating, one single zombie that I didnt manage to shake off, after I turn around to shoot him hits me once and I break my leg, crawl for the rest of the game ended up giving up again. The broken leg stuff needs to be addressed, not only that but how come a zombie hitting from top down on my chest breaks my legs, we need other broken bones.

Looks like they are working on the broken legs issue. That's why I head to hospital asap and stock up on morphine. I have 5 stick atm lol. Here is the dayz 1.7.2 changelog
Basically your legs break less easily but now you have beartraps to contend with! Now we just need bears :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Affected addons: |
