Prediction - You're wrong.

The sad part is, no one will remember when you're wrong.

Not 6 months.

12-18 months is correct time-table.

Once subs start dropping and box sales dry out.

Game population will be accustomed with cash shop,  inftastructure on place since day 1, so transtiition from Funcom point view will be smooth.

They'll just need make possible to get free access to some few first zones, put unlocks into store for free accounts + consideraby enlarge item shop and tie it more into gameplay and game mechanics.

All of those can be done long-before switch is pressed and with relatively low-costs compared to transition of other P2P games into freemium.

While I disagree with the OP and think it will take a bit longer than 6 months, there is strong evidence that F2P has been built into the game already and the change has been planned.  One indication is a "change account type" option on the account page that is currently not active.  There is an upgrade/special option to buy the extra packs and a cancel option that all work.  There really is no reason for a "change" account button given there is already a button to cancel your sub and a button to buy the bonus packs.  The only games I have even seen a change account type button is to go from free to silver or gold in F2P games.

If the subs fall off like they did in SWTOR then it could indeed go F2P in 6 months assuming the mechanisms are in place as I have suggested.  Otherwise, I give it at least 12 months until people have played through it and become bored enough to move on.

AoC and AO are NOT free games, you still need a sub.  They always offer the origional content as a trial however some time after the expansion...FROOB style.

This however is just a troll thread.

So come back a few months after the first expansion and youll probably be able to play all origional content for free, but need to buy the expansion box and monthly sub for the new content...which in every funcom game is vital to compete.  I think AoC the game offerd the froob accounts what...like 2 years after launch...and it was probably the worst launch in mmo history due to the massive hype the game had at the time (remember it was going to be the game changer of its day)

IMO its a really good blend of the two since vets dont get screwed ove and new/broke players can at least play a huge portion of the game without paying a dime.

Actually, I wouldn't mind that setup.

.. But in a good way.

Swtor didn't loose players because it has subs, swtor lost players because its a bad game. It's also a bad game that has competition from 2 other games that do the exactly the same thing but better - rift and wow.

Most if these failed games failed because they so are like wow, but with less cobtent than wow, so players might as well go back to wow.

Tsw is nothing like wow.

The MMORPG model is shifting to F2P + item shop model - this is a fact, the entire industry is moving to this model.

Right now there is a perception in the community that F2P games are inferior in quality as many of the early ones were - but all major game studios with their AAA titles are going to F2P+ microtrans model.

Why? Because it's more lucrative - studies have shown that the same gamer who is refusing to pay $15 per month will often spend up to $40 per month over numerous smaller $1 to $1.50 transactions. This is just the psychology of our consumer mind.

That is all.

Oh and either way - I am looking forward to having fun in TSW, and many other upcoming F2P titles in the future.

i doubt it will be f2p based on what you claim. it already has a cash shop, a box price, and a sub .. why drop the sub for no reason? greed is greed.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

I wouldnt count on it. They will hold a solid subscriber base for a while. Since the game is sub based PLUS a cash shop why in the hell would they make it F2P untill subs die off some? They wont.

Exactly, good catch.

Tribes ascend did this, you can buy your way onto premium servers, with premium accounts, as well as content and items. The real trouble is, players have actually been asking for this kind of pay model.

The more they ask for F2P, the more money they will end up spending in the long run, just to play the game. Very sad.

Yes and no. For some it definitly will. They will want that xp boost or that boost. Stuff that really isnt worth the price but they want to level or grind faster. For someone like me I save money. I will buy bank space, bag space ect and MAYBE a cosmetic item or two if it looks awesome and supports me showing that off instead of my regular gear. If its like LOTRO where you buy zone packs that works to. Sure that might cost me more in the long run if I play for years but at least I can stop anytime I get bored.

It will go FTP. It is made to go ftp. When depends on how it does.

What is Funcon's benchmark for success?

How much rope will Funcon give the devs?

How much will clunky combat and other issues effect the game?

I would guess at least a year though, since Funcon will suck the subs dry first.

They aren't going to go F2P within the first year. 1-2 years, is a possibility though.

Actually no because DC Universe was done it 6 months so really it all depends on who created the game

Funcom has given a very aggressive financial projection for TSW, expecting over 1M in box sales, a retained average monthly subscriber base of about 400k for the first year, and an average per user fee of $20.25 per month between sub and cash shop.

I think it is extremely unlikely that it will go F2P in the first 6 months. I think it is more interesting to wonder if they can actually deliver on their lofty projections, and how aggressive they will have to be with bug fixes, implementing what I would consider to be standard MMO features (e.g. dungeon finder), and delivering new content given that they are releasing with about 3 months for an "average" player at launch. So far, they have promised a lot of things, I'm not sure that their track record supports a rapid delivery of these things, but companies can change.

So no, at best you'll see trial offers for things like Kingsmouth and the Savage Coast, or maybe some sort of model similar to AoC around the 1 -  1.5 year mark.

Or who knows, if they deliver, this game could really go for a good portion of the 7 years of content they have planned.

funny how people think swtor tanked.it didnt, welcome to merging servers in a mmo

if swtor tanked,it would be free to play right now.but it isnt,oh.and 4chan called, they want there overused meme back

oh and before you say its going to free to play.it isnt, the free to play that its going to be is like a free trial for people to try, that isnt going full free to play.i doubt swtor will go free to play anyway,it will just keep hemmoraging subs until ea decides to pull the plug

Current MMO dev teams = Keystone cops.A pure comedy of errors, sadly its not as intentional.

I think there are rooms for some P2P games out there as well, and I think B2P games will increase a lot the next few years.

If TSW will go the same way as AoC is something I can´t guess since I havn´t tried it yet and don´t know if it is in the same shape as AoC was at release or not. If it is in bad shape it will go F2P and FC will have destroyed their third game with potential due to another crappy launch. The sad thing is that if AoC would have released in good shape FC could probably afford to wait until TSW really was ready.

But we will see, as a wise man said: "The future is like the butt of a baboon, colorful and full of sh%&".

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

6/29/12 1:50:48 AM#99

Maybe a free trial within that time span you predicted, but F2P, I really doubt that and you can quote me on this.

What other big name title has gone to F2P within 6 months?

Lord of the Rings - No

Age of Conan - No

Everquest 2 - No

Star War the Old Republic - No

Star Trek Online - No

Champions Online - No

City of Heroes - No

Warhammer Online - No

Are the only big name titles that come to mind.

I will take my odds against you that it doesn't go F2P within 6 months.

All of those can be done long-before switch is pressed and with relatively low-costs compared to transition of other P2P games into freemium.

Actually no because DC Universe was done it 6 months so really it all depends on who created the game

It's not about who created the game. It is about meeting the projected revenues & profits.

Of course if TSW will EXTREMLY underperfrom financially wise like DCUO did, then Freemium may come sooner.

I was not talking about extreme situation though.  For now Funcom did oficially project estimates for first year in investors information. Estimates that take P2P + Cash Shop model into account.

So no Freemium in first 12 months, UNLESS TSW will really underperform alot.
