Originally posted by darwa Actually yes it does. See if you pay 8.99 for a sub. VAT then taken out...that's less money that Funcom gets from having a UK subscriber than they get from a US subscriber. You're saying they should eat the VAT like other companies because that's how it always was. So it has everything to do with the point and explains why you're paying a little more for a sub vs. US.

We are paying more than 15% more than usa. We are paying 28% more. VAT is not 28% in the UK (it might be in Europe, but it ain't here). It looks to me like they converted $ to € then converted € to £ rather than a direct conversion. Anyway how come usa gamers get away with not paying local sales tax?

Sales tax in the UK are 20%. In Germany it's 19%, France has 19.6%, 23% Finland, etc. So UK hasn't any higher sales tax then the rest of europe actually. And now let's convert the currencies, shall we? €1 = £0.8 So €15 should be £12, which funnily enough is exactly the prices Funcom is asking for. Brits should really stop complaining and face the truth that you've been paying way too less for the last ten years, especially for PC-games. |

$15 = £9.59 £9.59 + VAT (19%) = £11.49 So the question is charging 19% VAT correct or not? well let's find out. According to this...http://www.crazysquirrel.com/finance/vat-calculator.jspx It's 17.5% That means at this moment it should be £11.27 Factoring in inflation and market (prices change) £11.49 does not seem that rediculous of a difference.

Listed US$ prices don't include taxes. There's your problem. So to calculate correctly it would be $15 = £9.75 + 20% sales tax = £11.7 Something else you wanna proof wrong? Funcom is charging exactly the same amunt of money for every currency. Brits only rabble, because they were subsidized during the last 10 years, having paid too little. |

Originally posted by stragen001 Sales Tax varies from state to state. Government law dictates that if you buy something online and the place of business resides in said state, you pay sales tax. I live in New York and order from a company that ships all over the world. That company is based in New York. I have to pay the f'n sales tax for city AND state. It sucks, but that's the breaks.

$15 at current Exchange rate = £9.59
UK VAT is 20% So that means £11.51 so the new price looks fair, although its still £1.52 more than any other mmo over here, which are low for historical reason of sterling being a very strong currency during the mmo boom. We don't have import taxes with Canada (commonwealth), Norway(eu but not Eurozone like us brits) or usa (trade agreements), Ao there are no other taxes. We were being ripped off at the original £12.99 |

I don't mean to pry really but I was curious what the uproar was all about so I decide to see WHAT exactly VAT was....I nabbed this quote from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_added_tax)
"The value added to a product by a business is the sale price charged to its customer, minus the cost of materials and other taxable inputs. A VAT is like a sales tax in that ultimately only the end consumer is taxed. It differs from the sales tax in that, with the latter, the tax is collected and remitted to the government only once, at the point of purchase by the end consumer. With the VAT, collections, remittances to the government, and credits for taxes already paid occur each time a business in the supply chain purchases products."
Seems to me either way you look at it the end price of doing business is screwing everyone. Looks like the VAT is providing you guys with an overinflated sense of price. So technically without the Tax you're paying less than the US and with the Tax you're paying approx. the same. Someone is getting screwed here but i don't think it's you guys... well you are... but it's like an equal amount of screwing. Go figure.
