I'm a little tentative about GW2 to be honest......GW1 was hyped quite a bit also and when I tried it I found it very mediocre at best.....I realize they are two different games but just saying the hype was there for the first one also....Also GW2 has a little too much hype for my liking.....It seems like all the games that have had this kind of hype here (AoC, WAR, SWTOR, Darkfall, etc) just havent been anywhere near as good as people here tell it. |

@OP You dont need to tell us you preordred your points were relatively valid. The othe thing is if you were ok paying a sub the GW2 wont really cause you to not pay that sub. GW2 isnt a WoW killer and if it was it wouldnt matter anways. The truth is if a game is worth playing it will be played.
Originally posted by Theocritus The hype has so little to do with it. Hype is stupid and if you follow the hype your only hurting yourself. If you can name all those titles then you should have learned from the past dont even look at the hype play in beta read the player comments etc etc. Its a very old song and dance and I think we all should know the rhythm by now. |

I do not care who will kill whom for others, i only care if i have fun playing a game. And after playing GW2 for 8 days (2 bwe + stress test) it killed every single mmo i played so far for me. I just cannot picture myself playing another themepark mmo with a sub fee, gear treadmill, quest hubs, level grind curve, static combat. And All of the games on this site's list that is not a sandbox style mmo falls into that category. I just dont want to play that same retarded game (wow swtor tera aoc aion etc etc) with different skin and a couple of boring features over and over again. So games kill games. And GW2 just did it. |

I too, really do not care if GW2 kill any other games at all. All I want is GW2 to be a successfull MMO. Hoping other MMO companies will follow Anet trend and innovate instead of becoming WOW clone. Cos I can't stand WOW gameplay and questing anymore. Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language :) |

I'm selfish and don't care about anyone else but me. Guild Wars 2 killed WoW. Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

I hate to say it.. but it's this mentality that is turning me OFF from MMO's in general.. This competitive gaming that some are obsessed wtih.. When I started playing EQ1 in 99.. We didnt' care about killing DAoC or killing AC or any other game.. Nor did others try to kill EQ.. Who cares .. Really? Do you think the PGA is trying to kill the NFL? or NFL trying to kill NBA? Can't people just play to play and have fun.. My G*d I swear this genre is going right down the tubes.. LOL |

Saying a game will "kill" another game is stupid because no one is ever going to agree on what "kill" means. For example, UO still existed after EQ came out, but a significant amount of players migrated to EQ and UO was no longer the dominant MMORPG. So did EQ "kill" UO? You could say yes because it essentially took its "crown." Or you could say no because UO still existed after EQ (and still exists today). So can a game "kill" another? It all depends on what you define "kill" as. On the other hand, I think we all can agree that a new game's release can have a significant effect on existing games from players leaving their existing game and migrating to the new game. And I do think GW2 will have this effect on several games. Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob? |

Maybe the makers of "kill" threads are thinking that the devs from ANet are going to go all ganstah and pop caps in the Bliz devs' assess, yo. I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play. |

Business kills games, not devs and not players. I was tempted to say publishers kill games but that isn't even true, it's just plain old business.
Players getting excited about a game is one thing. Investors getting stoked about a game is another. I think there really is some kind of fairy dust being sprinkled around that MMOs are easy games to make and that MMO players like to jump from game to game. When investors expectations aren't met then things go south fast.

Everything is subjective with this kind of question. Will the new Microsoft Surface kill the iPad? No, it won't if you are an Apple fanboi! I'm a WoW fan but I am also swaying towards the new thing and I myself believe that will be GW2. With every other game that has come out since WoW I have always gone back to Azeroth for my mmorpg fix. Hopefull I can play in a new land for a few years! Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

Originally posted by Xese I have always been vague by the definition of "x game will kill WoW". Sure, maybe a few years after the release of GW2, GW2 is pretty likely to have a greater playerbase than WoW just by looking at the current trends in the market. That is however not to say that GW2 will "kill" WoW as WoW will still have its own very VERY healthy subscription base (and will still probably stay as leader in terms of subscription base). That is ofc on top of the fact that both games can co-exist together due to b2p model of GW2. I can definately see how Titan or whatever the next Blizzard's mmo can kill WoW though (maybe a few more years after the release of THAT game) which is really a non-brainer.
Just want GW2. |

Two standards will never be seen with these two games. 1 the mass influx of NEW MMORPG gamers when Wow arrived. This is SHEER luck that will never happen again. When you have 12 million NEW MMO gamers that have never played a MMO before,it is pretty easy to hook them in when all they have to compare it to was their cheap console or single player games.I know a friend of mine was blown away by even the simplest things ,just because he had never seen it before, for myself it was a been there done that already. 2 GW an GW2 can never be judged on an even playing field because without a subscription we truly will never know how people really feel about the game.I think most agree that IF they had a subscription ,numbers would be MUCH smaller.

Yeah, that 12-million number. It's not that many, but even worse, half of them are Chinese and who play on game cards that are charged by the hour. You play one-hour in China, you are a 'subscriber' for the quarter.
Don't get me wrong, WoW is a big, big game. But 12 million is more fiction than fact. It's more 5 million western subscribers, who, frankly, are the important ones because that's where 94% of WoWs revenue comes from. Those 5 million Western players. The money they get from China is a just a royalty from a licensing agreement from a bunch of casual players who, like I said, if they play for an hour, they count as a sub for that quarter.
I, btw, don't blame Blizzard for this quasi-fiction. I'd do the same thing too! It's not a 'lie' per se, but it sucks in the ill-informed and gullible and makes you look like King Kong instead of 'just' an 800lb gorilla.
