Pirates Of The Burning Sea(POTBS) F2P

As you can tell by the title this is the perfect game. It is indeed a free to play game with Subscription(which can be bought with ingame currency). It also has a Cash shop which does not un balance the game and everything in the cash shop can be bought wth in game money.

Description:

The layout of the game is amazing, your in a 17-18th century ship which can be used for different sole purposes such as a mobile killing machine or a peacefull merchant ship. If you are the type that likes to kill things but in a tactical way then this part you will love. While you are fighitng somone you can attack them with you ship and when there ships health is down you come close and board there ship(Optional). You can fight with the ship or on the ship! When you create your character right off the bat you get to pick your nation which is from four nations Pirates, England, France, and Spain.

Once you pick one of these nations you stay with it and you fight for your nation.

PvP:

One of the things i love about this game it is an open world pvp type thing you can be attacked anywhere and everywhere.  One key feature of the pvp is Conquest

Conquest:

You and your nation fight for territory around the map which is everyday from a certain time to an end time(matters what server your on) The battles ive heard can get really big.

SO if your a pvp type person and love pirate games this is the game for you!

If you want to add me on there and play with me my ingame name is Davorr Cutlass Im on the Antuiga server

But, if it's the perfect game, why do you need to be into specific things to like it?

Rofl, perfect game.

Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.

Well, it's one of the few games I haven't tried yet, but UWO already seems to have filled that niche.

Beyond graphics, how would you compare the two?

You saw that perfect game?  Yeah, Matt Cain is a pretty good pitcher, isn't he?  :p

While it nominally has open world PVP, in practice, the game is too sparsely populated for it to matter.  I played the game for about two months, was never in a PVP battle, and only even saw others in one once, ever.

The game had two glaring problems.  One is that it was too repetitive.  The quests are all instanced, and a bunch of them don't merely share the same map, but the same mob spawns even.  The only difference is the level of the mobs and the quest text, starting point, and reward.

The other problem is that land combat is astonishingly awful.  As in, attack one mob, wait for auto-attack to kill it, attack the next mob, wait for auto-attack to kill it, and so forth.  Want to tab out in combat?  Go AFK?  Get up and leave the room to go get a drink?  Have at it.  It doesn't matter.  Well, at least once you get a group down to one mob it won't matter.

Yea OP I dont know if its perfect, but Pirates of the Burning Sea is highly enjoyable.  I loved it.  I still have it installed just havent visited it for awhile but will dive back in again one day.

I often recommend it to those looking for an mmo to play since the F2P has very few limitations and by paying the sub fee of $15 just once, it unlocks the entire game and you can cancel your subscription ten minutes later if you want and the game stays unlocked for your account forever.

The quest givers are not voiced, its text, however the text is actually fun to read.  Thats the first mmo Ive seen that in.  The stories are great fun, supposedly the game has some of the best PVP (although I never got to diving into it) and the crafting is about as complex as EvE Online, which some love but I didnt like.  Which was fine because crafting is not a requirement at all.  I never crafted a thing and got along just dandy.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a highly under rated mmo and I have very few complaints and many good things to say about it.

I played for about as long.  Started about 5 months ago.  The game was teeming with people.  Tons of players.  So I cant relate to what you're talking about.  No Im not fibbing you.  There were many many players on both servers.

It can be slightly repetitive but since I loved the ship combat I didnt mind that repetition one bit.

Land combat is especially weak in the beginning levels as you pretty much just spam the same button over and over but as you progress and level it opens up a little bit and there's some strategy involved.  I actually enjoyed it but I do admit its probably one of the weaker parts of the game.  But I still found myself enjoying it enough that if I was just out hunting ships, I might board an enemy ship just to get in some melee combat because I might be missing it.  So its not that bad.

Beyond graphics, how would you compare the two?

I think there about the same.

They're not even remotely similar.  That's kind of like saying that EVE and SWTOR are about the same because they're both science fiction with stuff off in space.  PotBS is arguably more similar to WoW than it is to UWO (though in fairness, it isn't very similar to either).

What's the difference between a theme park and a sandbox?

Pirates of the Burning Sea is very much a theme park game.  Each port is a typical theme park quest hub, with a zillion quests sitting there waiting for you.  You take a bunch of quests, and then you go do all of the quests.  The quests are all instanced, so you won't run into any other players while doing quests unless you group ahead of time.  Then you go on to the next port.

All that PotBS really has is ship combat (which is pretty good), land combat (which is awful), and crafting (which is a nice complementary feature).  The crafting system is based on, you get so much labor each day to craft stuff.  The value of crafted goods is basically all in your labor.  So you kind of have to spend a few minutes per day crafting, but there's no real sense in spending more than that, as you can't do anything after you use your daily labor.  It is a player-driven economy, but everyone basically has to participate in the game economy just as much.

Uncharted Waters Online, on the other hand, is a sandbox game.  It has a bunch of entirely different types of content, and you can pick and choose which subset of the content you want to do.  It has several different crafting professions, and you can do as many as you like, or none.  It has ship combat, which is all right, but not as good as PotBS.  It has land combat, which is rather bad, but not as bad as PotBS.  It has an adventuring system of going out and discovering things.  It has a well-developed trading system of buying goods from one port, shipping them, and selling them elsewhere at a profit.

In UWO, you don't have a main character level.  You have separate levels in adventure, trade, and battle.  Unlike Vanguard, which nominally tried to do something like this only to have nearly all of the players focus mostly on combat, in UWO, all three sections of the game are pretty well fleshed out.  If anything, battle is the least important of the three.  As the sum of those levels gets higher, you can acquire more skills--but you can take whichever skills you want.  You level up skills separately by using them.

Also, UWO is an extremely complciated game.  I think Koei does some things primarily for the sake of making the game more complicated.  I once wrote up an explanation of how to refill your vigor (roughly mana) while in town.  It ended up being about 20 paragraphs, and I missed some of the nuances.  Nothing is simple, and not that many things follow normal MMORPG conventions.  If you think that a statement of the form "all MMORPGs do X" is true, then unless it's part of the definition of an MMORPG (e.g., involves online gameplay), UWO is likely to be a counterexample to it.

I played it in the Fall of 2008.  At some point after I quit, they merged everything all four servers down to one, which may have helped.  I'm not sure if the game had enough players to populate one server, though.  An outright majority of the messages in public chat channels were from gold spammers.

In England, you know where the English language came from spelt is the correct word to use, "spelled" which i think he was referring is essentially the same, but depending on the context and structure of the sentence "spelt" is correct in this instance.

But yes like many words they can have totally different meanings depending on the context ;p live vs live...for example.

I've played POTBS for YEARS off and on. I actually bought the game way back before it went F2P. I enjoyed it for a few months, then put it down. Once F2P came out, I hopped in again for a little bit before putting it down again to try other things. (Diversity is the spice of life, right?)

I will say, it is a fun and engaging game.Considering the age of the game; the graphics are crisp, the visuals stunning, and the water looks great.

As a few posters have noted, the downside is that it does become rather repetitive, especially taking into account how long sea battles can become. On the flip side, sea battles are always unique and exciting because of how tactical they are. Oh, and don't forget, if you sink your ship - that's it! You'll need to put a new one together, ala EVE.

The cash shop is one of the few i've seen that is entirely OKAY. They have a system that allows to you buy and sell their tokens for game gold. So, someone could spend real money for these tokens, and turn around and sell it for gold. This allows players options for how they want to invest: Time (game) vs. Time (real money income). I built and sold enough starter level ships to buy myself a pet pitbull. He's awesome, and follows me everywhere. =)

Which leads us to crafting. The crafting is a rich, detailed, and complicated affair. Someone hinted about using labor to craft, and only having so much labor and so on. That's true, but what sets it apart from the standard faire is finding a niche to fill - for example, sailmaking. Then, finding a port that provides the raw materials, as well as having - and heres the kicker - a low tax rate. There are so many layers to profitability and loss, that crafting alone can become a whole way of playing the game. This is  reinforced by  having the Freetrader class, which more or less "capitalizes" on these facets.

Ground combat is so so, and pretty standard. Nothing to write home about - but let's be honest, it is certainly not any worse then TSW. It's more or less an avenue and opportunity to check out your avatar, and get a nice swashbuckling feel. Which is great, because of the virtually limitless customization options!

In short, if you haven't tried it and have the spare time or just have a void to fill, give it a shot!
