Its a clunky system and not very entertaining for a game that... is it TRYING to be action combat? If it is, then it needed to let go of MMO-industry-standard gameplay ALL TOGETHER.  Not try to come up with some kind of bad hybrid.  Like shoving a circle into a square shaped hole.

I suspect a lot of people are having this reaction to the combat. No matter how complex the skill wheel is, or how interesting the synergy, if this doesn't translate into "fun to play" they're going to have trouble retaining players.

"Loading screens" are not "instances".

No it looks like only a few. Did you see why he felt this way? It makes sense he would like mmos to play like single player RPGs. Wouldn't we all ;)

You think only a few people are going to dislike the combat in TSW?

Really?

I've put about two hours into the game now.

My question is.... What, is, this game?

Is this going to be just a Raid game? Funcom going to just put out different crazy goofy raid romps as content updates?

Or is this a... linear story-driven game that the updates will be more linear paths down story-lane. Like little mini DLC adventures.

The game is clearly not a sandbox and will clearly not be going down any form of a sandboxy element... not even Rift or GW2 dynamic events seem like they'll fit into TSW.

I'm guessing this is just another Raid game, but its hard for me to tell right now.

Additonal thoughts:

I just finished Saints Row 3 last night and considering its a game that allows you to create a far more detailed and awesome looking character of your own tastes... has amazingly smooth animations and extremely entertaining combat... and is also set in modern time, I have a hard time not comparing TSW to SR3.  And SR3's developers are just flat out more talented and better trained than the folks at Funcom who're responsible for TSW.

What are you even on about? What is any mmorpg about? Of course it's not a sandbox. What do you do in GW2 or Rift? Same thing in TSW. There's no raids at launch, so how is it a raiding game Maybe puzzle raids after, which sound awesome.

Also, i don't like to insult people, but you have to be really stupid to compare a single player action shooter to an mmorpg. But, i'll use your weak logic. Skyrim, Witcher, Dragon's Dogma, and tons of others just show how their devs are afr more talented than Anet and Trion, with their supeior graphics, combat and animations

I think you like to insult people.  So you shouldn't lie about it.

I'm speaking about Animations.  There's no reason an Online game can't have the same animations that an Offline game has.

Absolutely no reason.  So don't give me that bullcrap about "ooooooooooo ur compare mmos to sp gaaaaaymez!"

Well, we're all a-holes in some part of us :P

However, you simply made 0 sense with your post. First you ramble on about what the game is about. Why are you confused? it's an mmorpg like all themeparks. You should inform yourself about the game (not trying to sound like a smart a$$ btw) and see what it's about and what it offers.

Now, animations and characters models are too my biggest grips with the game. I agree there, but you can't blame TSW for not having SR3 combat system. You just can't. Tab target has been known to be the system for over a year now. It's like me blaming other fantasy setting mmos for not having Dragon's Dogma combta and boss system. Hel, it's like blaming the game for not having open world pvp, when it was never designed to have it in the first place.

Well that's what we have so far in this thread... You and one other guy who doesn't like TSW period. Like I said I respect you view point and understand why you don't like it. Others with similar gaming taste as yours may feel the same. Again you gave a good review.

I went Dragon, the story was OK, felt a bit tedious as the first 20 minutes all I done was watch cutscenes.

Chose pistols and quite enjoy the combat and that they have now added dodge.

Felt like I was playing a single player game most of the time though because this is the only MMO I have ever played where not a single person has typed in chat, is chat even on by default? I was typing in general and say to try and talk to people but they would just stare blankly at me or run away and kill more zombies.

The quests were a nice twist on the usual MMO quests.

So far I am not really impressed with the game over all, it hasn't grabbed me at all apart from the fact I have dual wield pistols. I need people to communicate in MMOs and so far of the many people in Kingsmouth no one has said a word.

haha :) Right click the chat frame and subscribe to the different channels. I don't think you are subscribed by default :) The chat system is my biggest grip atm. It's not very intuitive.

edit - had to lol again. I've did the same thing on more than one occasion. I even got mad at a guy for kicking from the group (I was way under geared.) I was like "Next time say something!" he said " o.O I did in group chat." I wasn't surscribed so I didn't see it. lol

Oh man I am glad I brought it up here, no wonder no one is talking, seems like a stupid decision to have you unsubscribed to everything by default. It is an MMO surely everyone communicating is the whole point?

I realize that the game is a Themepark. It doesn't take very long inside of it to figure that out.  But its within my rights to feel that it becoming a Raid-fest of a game doesn't "feel right" for the subject matter of the game's theme.

Additionally, I never once said that TSW should have Saint's Row's combat system.  What I said was Saint's Row was far better made.

Saint's Row 3 = Inspired game design, especially in the field of animation and character creation.

The Secret World = Uninspired game design, in the field of animation and character creation.

Would it help you if I used an MMO as an inspired example of this Field?

TERA = inspired animations and quality character design.

Any easier?  I chose SR3 because its also set in a modern time period and... as I said... I just finished playing it.  I still stand by the statement that an Online game can have the same level of quality animations and character design, but it takes a Developement team with talent and desire.

lmao yeah man. I don't think it is working as it should. There was on  build that kept you subscibed and I think even auto subscribed. Lol people have raised a stink about it. I think most of us have gotten used to it., but yeah the chat system is the definition of clunky atm haha.

You did say there is no reason why mmos cant have SP game animations...

There are like hundreds of reasons why. You'd  need a super computer to play it and a super super computer to build it.

What i don't understand is why you feel it's becoming a raid-fest if it doesn't even have them. And dungeons are just one part of the whole game.

Personally, i feel that the chracter models, animations in general like jumping and gliding, and the combat are the game's weakest part of the game too. However, i don't really care all that much. And while i prefer sandboxes with players vreated/driven content, TSW interestes me because of everything else it does as a themepark. The crafting, skil based, huge rp possibilities, the lore, stor and world and genereal, pvp, quests, etc. While i myself would prefer an action/aim based combat, i can deal with it because everything else outweights it.

On the other hand, it seems that to you, it's simply not the case, which is cool. You have your preferences and i have mine. If the combat ruins the whole game for you, no problem, but i don't think TSW is trash or bad because of it.

I've been hard on this game over the last two BWE's but it really seems to be polishing up nicely now.  There are far fewer bugs, and glitches.  The new combat animations and sounds are MUCH better, especially for weapons like the pistols which were just aweful before.

As much as I know GW2 is going to be a great game, it's also going to be fairly safe and predictable.  TSW has the opportunity to be a lot more, at least for me.  I have already purchased both games, so it will be interesting to see which one will catch my interest.  I have to say that TSW's setting, story and skill setup seems much more engaging to me at this point.  If Funcom has a good launch, and the game gets deeper as you progress, they have a good shot at being the one to keep me busy until we see ArchAge, or The Repopulation.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the love for GW2, but I don't really think there are many surprises to be had there except for the fact that WvW is likely going to be a lot more popular in general than PvP is in other MMO games because ANet made it fun and accessible to all.  However, the rest of GW2 is going to be pretty much the same as every other similar fantast game out there.  Sure, it will be prettier perhaps, it will have a twist on combat, but if you are being completely honest about it, GW2 isn't anything truly revolutionary.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

edit - had to lol again.

It is an MMO surely everyone communicating is the whole point?

lmao yeah man. I don't think it is working as it should. There was on  build that kept you subscibed and I think even auto subscribed. Lol people have raised a stink about it. I think most of us have gotten used to it., but yeah the chat system is the definition of clunky atm haha.

When I went back online it worked by default so it must be some sort of bug, I will submit a report anyway, thanks for your help!

You did say there is no reason why mmos cant have SP game animations...

There are like hundreds of reasons why. You'd  need a super computer to play it and a super super computer to build it.

Will you at least admit though that TSW has crappier animations all around than most other AAA MMO titles?  Heck, even Funcom's own AoC was developed with better animations 5 years ago.  Sorry, but when I look at TSW animations, I cringe.  They're just bad.

You two could just argue in private messages and we would all be pretty happy about it.  ;)

I don't like the combat either. Or I should say, I feel like it's over-simplified and feels clunky.

Combat:
I'm using a keyboard and mouse to play the game (obviously) and the game encourages you to move while you fight.  I find this to be extremely difficult to do efficiently.  You have a pack of zombies after you so you try to run backward and continue to shoot your spells/guns at the same time.... Not easily accomplished.

Dodging is all well and good to get away from the indicated AoE's that an enemy is about to lay down, but dodging is otherwise a waste of time as the enemies are instantly right back ontop of your character.

It's an MMORPG. If you want to be effective at kiting, get some abilities that let you kite. I made a simple build that does that:

  • It uses an Assault Rifle elite ability that throws an AoE grenade that slows
  • I got a Jump-back that slows
  • I added a builder that afflicts slowed targets
  • I got a passive that makes every 7th shot slow
  • I got a passive that adds a dot every time I slow
  • I added a passive that adds a penetration buff every time I afflict
That's a really simple build with 3 active and 3 passive abilities with good synergy.

The basic pattern of this build goes something like this while circle-strafing and active dodging to keep my distance
  1. Elite AoE slow/dots
  2. Builder dots due to passive
  3. Some finisher
  4. Jump-back to get some distance (which also slows and dots)
  5. Every 7th attack slows and dots due to the two passives
  6. Builder dots due to passive
  7. Some Finisher
I think a blade build would fit quite well with this, adding some stuns and dashes and some good finishers to use right after the stun. The gear you want with this build is probably pretty low on hp and high on damage since you want to kill the mobs asap before they can hit you. That type of gear is quite easy to find, or you can just craft it in the very open crafting system.

I really don't get why some people go all high-and-mighty about the combat system after playing it for two hours and saying the ability wheel is irrelevant because you can't play the way you want. As shown here if you put in a minimal amount of effort you can play the character you want. For some a class-based system where you start at max levelwould obviously have been easier...

I can see a lot of people not liking the combat in this game even with the improved animations overall they are still subpar for a 2012 game. Also after playing games like TERA and the GW2 beta and seeing those games combat flow very well compared to TSW... now saying that for me I like the modern setting and the atmosphere of the zones very much and the skill system is really intriguing which adds a lot imho. Also for the dodge people need to see it has been tacked on at the last second. The main purpose I can see for it now is just getting out the way of the AOE stuff and the big attacks from mobs or it has uses it PVP, but overall it's not as usefull as dodge is in games like TERA or GW2.

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall.
