An RTS that is turn based and has pauses isn't an RTS, its a TBS. Hence Real Time Strategy and Turn Based Strategy.
"When did having enough stop being enough?" "The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.” - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie |

Let's not get too far off topic. In terms of games like Dust 514 or FPS mods with persistance, or OFPS games like MAG, it's less important to define what these games are, and more important know how much they appeal to FPS to players. Now my initial impression was that FPS players would either prefer their genre to go into a MMO direction, or a more E-sports direction, factoring in the costs of production for these types of games. However since arguable the FPS genre is the biggest of all gaming genres today (tons of FPS games are made yearly), it might be possible for FPS genre to grow in more than one direction and still have enough customers to sustain both. I do care if i get a persistent character and items. In terms of gameplay, it would be cool to have objectives beyond just rack up kill count. I probably will play something like a WOW battleground, done in a FPS manner. Planetside 2 looks interesting .. but mostly (to me) from a FPS mechanics, and sci-fi world setting point of view. |

I don't like FPS multiplayer because it's full of people I want to strangle... but I LOVE FPS games in general. The gameplay is great, and I tend to flow towards any MMO that leans towards action-oriented combat. I still play games solely based on depth, like EVE or Wurm, but if they had the kind of combat I love... well, I'd be the biggest fanboi on the planet. So yes, I love FPSMMOs, but I'm not a typical FPS stereotype. Writer / Musician / Game Designer Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4 |

Originally posted by Bigbadwlf A tournament with any prize would push me away from a game. I'm just not good enough(or have a team) to win or even get a prize slot. A persistant world on the other hand intreges me. Shifting the focus of the game off of individual skill (although it'd still help alot) to a more strategic position is much more interesting to me. Wolfenstein had some of this. I would like to set up as a sniper in a position well behind my front line without too much worry about someone sneaking up behind me (but still being able to be sniped/blown up) and forcing the enemy to choose a new attack vector or protecting medics gathering the wounded/dead. Also, death has to mean more than wait 15 seconds and respawn fully geared like maybe paradropping back in. But above all, a persistant map gives more of a goal then just kill 30 people in 15 minutes. |

Originally posted by Bigbadwlf yes. I like playing FPS games from time to time, but have to deal with "fantasy" mmorpg games for the community factor (dont get me wrong, I do like my mmorpgs :]). So an mmofps sounds like the best idea in the freakin world to me! I mean with regular FPS lobby games, they get old. You end up playing the same maps over and over again, start at the same point, people who have played the map a million times more than you are probably going to kill you first. In a persistent world, I don't know where the enemy "should" be. And what I defend today could be something I'm fighting to get back next week. I can see so much potential in mmofps. my fingers ache to click the trigger of my first Planetside 2 gun. :D |
