OP  6/09/12 9:26:08 AM#1

I would say it is a good game but was overhyped a bit. It is also not nearly as ready for release as I thought it would be but it is worth playing.

Postives (so far)

- I love the trade post (auction house). This is the best I have seen in any MMO.

- The events are great, especially after you get by the early ones.

- Convenience, a lot of time sinks are removed such as having to travel to a trainer, go to a mailbox, etc. Even the trade post (AH) can be accessed from out in the field.

- Community has been pretty good so far.

Negatives

 - Something about movement seems a little off to me. Almost like I am sliding around rather than running. I have heard people say this is improved from BWE1 but I stlil think it needs some work.

 - Class balance needs work. It is beta so I will leave it at that for now however this game cannot be released in its current state of class balance.

 - The UI needs more customization options. I read that it was improved for BWE2 but not having been in BWE1 I do not know what those were. Customization still seems very limited to me.

- The chat system is awful. This needs real work before release.

- combat. I do not feel connected to characters in combat. I am not a huge fan of WoW but the combat in WoW is better. GW2 doesn't have the ability lag like SWTOR had, but there is something missing from it that i can't put my finger on. WoW combat feels much tighter and abilities seem to matter more.

- Pet pathing, or lack thereof is something that needs worked on. For instance, on a ranger I was playing as I would run along my pet would not run beside me. It would either lag behind me or run up to me and then go out to the side in a half circle movement. Does not feel right at all.

Neutral

- Graphics - this will depend entirely on the art style that you like. If you are someone that wants WoW art style then you won't like GW2. If you prefer more of the EQ2 or Rift art style than this game is down your ally. Personally I could careless about this either way.

- good/evil - if you are someone who wants to play a necromancer thinking they are "evil" you will be disappointed. My story for necro seems entirely too "helpful." Considering that I am, a necromancer. For me this is a negative but I realize that some will like the change from sterotypes.

- fast travel - this may be a positive to some and negative some. You have to discover the points first but after you do, hopping around the map is near instant. It is nice for convenience but does take away from immersion a bit.

Overall it is a game that is worth playing though I do think it has been overhyped to some extent. It is beta so many of my negatives could improve by release. The devs have said over and over the game will not be released until it is ready, we'll see if they actually mean that or not.

I enjoyed the beta, one of the better ones I've ever played, but it still feels like a beta, not a polished game, and right now that's all it is, a beta. Let's hope it's not released still feeling like a beta (Age of Conan, The Old Republic and Aion all felt very beta to me at launch and I stopped playing them until they felt polished.)

Also, I hate fast travel, it completely removes the immersion from an MMO for me. I put up with it in single player games like Skyrim for some unknown reason, but it's a big NO for me in MMO's. And the lack of mounts.

Overall I agreed with almost all of your post though :)

Just a quick comment... necromancers don't seem to specifically be "evil" in the GW universe. In GW1 you had several necromancer heroes and really while they did have a bit of being "excentric" none of them felt really evil to me.

Also, (MILD SPOILER ALERT) in the novels there's one character named Killeen that's a sylvari necromancer... and really there isn't any sweeter and more helpful character in the novels so far. Basically she said that she became a necromancer because she was fascinated with death and everything it implies, since the sylvari race being so young they didn't even know whether they could die of old age (they knew they could die by injuries or disease, of course). In the novel she was always confused by why people were reacting negatively when she reanimated a fresh corpse and kept creeping her companions by asking (with a sweet smile) whether they would mind their bodies being turned into a zombie in case they died.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

I agree with most of your post.  But everyone must remember it is still beta.  Hopefully they'll continue to do fixes as they have since BW1.  BW2 seems a lot better, but still needs some fixes.  Good post, OP.  You sound neither like a fanboy or troll which seems to be rather difficult to do on these boards.

im probably going to have to agree with teh Op as well. though i feel like this has been way mroe overhyped, lol.... Core mechanics hardly ever change in a game during beta, so i have to say, they can tighten up mechanics, but overall. the game is good to me. not superb, not horrible.

As far as the movement goes its spot on with Guild Wars 1. So I really doubt its going to change any more then it already has. It's just one of the limitations of the engine they have developed over the years. The same goes along with the combat side of things. Feels just like it did in GW1 so I do not see that really changing between now and release.

As far as the rest goes I agree with you. Still its a fun and good game to play and without a monthly fee attached to it, the value is spot on.

I don't understand the idea behind "teleporters are so anti-imersion".

I mean, does anyone FORCE you to use them? I don't think so...

They exist for the 80% of the player base who is not RP-oriented, as do many other things in most games. The devs need to make money, and making the game appeal to more people is the best way to do it. Honestly, if anyone wants to walk, then...one could just....walk...

As for mounts, I'd be reallly amazed if they didn't have anything up their sleeves ^^ I'm guessing they'll most likely add something very soon there (tho I hope it'll high lvl content). Charr choppers anyone? :D

I agree with most of what the OP said. However, as far as some have said that since it is still beta they are giving AN some leeway I disagree with that reasoning. I don't disagree that a beta should be given leeway, but the problem I have is that GW2 is probably aiming to launch within a couple months and judging by the amount of issues testers are having with the game, I don't see AN being able to fix it all by launch.

Some might be ok with that, but me personally I am tired of accepting games being launched in mediocre status and won't be spending any more money on half-baked IP's. Especially with the innovation of current mobile gaming and Unreal Engine 4 making its recent debut, gamers should be expecting a lot more from dev companies.

I personally dont have any issues with the combat, it seems smooth to me.

As far as class balance, it doesnt have to be balanced since its not designed for 1v1 PvP.  Tough to really get a grasp when people dont have their full skill sets yet.

I agree that players have overhyped it, but it seems like it will be, rather easily, the best MMORPG at release since WoW.

Its the first MMO since LOTRO that truly cares about its world, which makes a huge difference to me.
