Yea, I know. The title is a bit confusing, but what I am asking is simple. I've always wanted to get into Dungeons and Dragons, it is one of the few games that I have not played. I kind of live in one of those old-timey, neophobic communities, so I am hard pressed to find anyone around who does play Dungeons and Dragons. The other day though, I heard a rumor that there was a place to play it online. I don't mean the MMORPG Dungeons and Dragons Online, but rather a place to play the board game on line. That's what I want to find out. Is there a place on this vast being known as the internet, to play D&D (The Boardgame) online with other real live people? me and my friends use a software called d20pro, it is a virtual table, along with skype we are all able to play D&D as if we were playing on a table again. It's pretty awesome, it just takes some time customizing the software and a few tricks to get around the fact the software was ideally made to host pathfinder or any other 3.5 ruleset. Wizard of the coast also has a virtual table online, but you need a d&d insider account with them in order to host or play games, also it has a limited tileset. You cannot import your own maps, pictures, etc etc If your gaming group is based all on Windows, Fantasy Grounds also has a sweet virtual table to play RPG games, it isnt as automated as d20pro client, but just as fun.
Basically what you are lookin for is a virtual table client, and a good group. |

MapTool is a virtual online tabletop (better than the Wizards one, IMO, and free). It doesn't replace everything that you need for a tabletop session, but it is a very good start. |

The Virtual Table from WotC has been in beta for awhile, open to D&D Insider subscribers, but still you'd need some friends and most likely the books to learn the rules for it to be useful, and from the video's i've seen, its a little clunky / lacking.. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/virtualtable

Originally posted by OricTheThief i'm sorry you make me groan calling it a board game, its called pen and paper, i would look into the RPGA (Role Playing Game Association) but most session I've ever played in online are in Forums There are times when one must ask themselves is it my passion that truly frightens you? Or your own? |

Originally posted by Arallu01 yeah it is definitely lacking and clumsy, BUT the good thing is the game state is hosted online, also its java based so mac, linux, and windows friendly. Yet it is limited in tilesets/maps/tokens. So it is hard to reccommend it since there are so many other choices that are a lot better.
I wonder what happened to their 3d virtual table. |

I'm sorry for misscalling it that, but like I said in the Original Post, I've never been able to play it before. I've seen it played only a handfull of times. Though I will look into that, thanks for the tip. I'll definitely look into maptool and d20pro, as I already have skype on this laptop and just need to activate it.
Edited due to my connection spazzing out and posting before I was done. "I do not know if I am looking at a fool who wishes to be king, or a king who is nothing more than a fool." |

The best online game I found that is close to the old D&D is World of Dungeons....It even uses rolls and the old D&D rule sets.....You can solo but it is mainly group based with up to 12 characters per group......It has 3 classes for free and 14 total.... Even if you get a premium account it is only a couple bucks a month |

Originally posted by OricTheThief It's been a long time, but IIRC, a couple of people had tools they could play pen and paper rpgs with friends over the net. Never used one of them, but I seem to recall something about it. Google might be a better place to look for it or boardgamegeeks.com |
