Studio 38 has closed down Big Huge Game despite KOA:Reocking selling more than what EA projected (they had two DLCs as well).

The leaked screenshots for copernicus look alot like KOA:Reckoning. |

Nice idea but poor planning and a poor game did not help. |

It's not just Big Huge Games they shut down... All of 38 Studios is being shuttered as well. They just laid off all of the employees company wide with about 5 minutes notice. They basically got a memo stating that this was their last day of employment.

Originally posted by gestalt11 That 1.2 million sold number must be their number, because every other report says they sold less than 400k . The fact that they had dlc was a credence to game makers making dlc as they make the game. |

i never understood why the people who actually make the game .ie animators, programmers and artists get sacked while useless douche bag executives and suits remain employed..thats the problem with this world too many useless people earning massive amounts of money while contributing very little to the cause. |

Originally posted by dontadow Actually, I thought so too, but when I went googling I found that number was just US sales. They never released (not that I could find) sales outside of the US, which is where I'm guessing the rest of that 1.2mill came from. But considering they needed 3 mill to break even + money to develop Copernicus, 1.2mill is still a drop in a bucket. They needed Diablo3-like numbers to truly be successful. It's not just a fault of their own, devs in general these days seem to be over-confident in their numbers. Someone lied and told them there were more gamers in the pool than there actually are. They need to start being more realistic with the amount spent on development costs, especially for a brand new studio. This is just the US and just in 1 month.

For some reason, it just never went on sale, anywhere. Maybe it is too new...but I would expect if they didn't make enough money...they would put it on sale.
It has been proven games that go on sale, earn TONS of money. At least on Steam.
Probably EA had something to do with that. My youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheExplorium MMORPG.com is like 4chan, but for gamers. WoW already does WoW good. PvPers that gank newbies, are carebears. They don't want a challenge (like a carebear), they just want easy mode (like a carebear) and a no challenge combat (like a carebear). |

I'm surprised KOA even sold that much, it wasn't exactly that good of a game plus they said they needed 3M sales to breakeven so it doesn't matter what EA projected who seem to have also realized it was going to fail if they projected such low numbers. Copernicus on the other hand actually seems like a good title so I'll be pretty disappointed if the game goes under. |

Originally posted by Gabby-air That's what confuses me, as EA is a publisher with the mind set of 'making money' - obviously. Therefore why would they publish a game that wouldn't have the possibility of turning profit? Makes such little sense to me. Plus the fact that ~1.3 Million copies worldwide were sold, wouldn't that inevitably turn profit?
Possibly they profit was too small once all cuts were taken to keep 38 studios afloat?

Originally posted by Silverbarr It probably made money for EA since they didn't fund the development and just published it but for 38 studios it was a loss since all development costs were on there end, just a guess though. Also 3Mil to breakeven means the development cost quite a bit money which quite frankly did not show in game, especially considering it's very outdated look. |

Originally posted by Gabby-air I would assume EA simply took a cut of sales. I am not even sure what 3M to breakeven really means since Reckoning was in development before 38 even bought them. Are they factoring in the money 38 spent to add in the new setting and buy BHG as well? And betting the farm on 3M in sales seems pretty risky to me. Even with it being multi platform its still a new IP. There are way too many games that have good backing and only making decent money. I mean look at Rage VGchartz has its total sales at 1.37M and its had much longer to sell as well. They had Id and Bethesda behind it and a number of awards. |
