A good friend of ours is involved in the ESO Project and just shared this link with me.
I was firmly in the camp of HeroEngine...er.....um..... BITTER BEER FACE! when I heard my friend was going to work for Zenimax and would be attached to ESO.
After learning that HeroEngine was only being used as a "whiteboard" I feel better.
Not saying the game is Greatness / Sorriness / WoW-killer / Miracle / Mana from Heaven / Trash / A Life-Changing Event; I have not actually played so much as an Alpha / Beta / Demo / Shareware copy. What I am saying is that No HeroEngine = GOOD DEAL |

Yes, I just finished reading this same post... Apparently, they only licensed the HeroEngine back in 2007 to use as a prototype to sort of "lay things out" while they were coding their own internal graphics engine specifically designed for ESO. |

This is great! I was feeling majorly apprehensive about the Hero Engine being used, granted the engine itself is good in development terms but it is antiquated in feel and general workings, now that this has been clarified I have to say that the game has a nice new appeal. Also what a great idea to use the Hero Engine to view the art ingame and get a feel for the artistic direction of the game. Hopefully the game features and workings will appeal even more once an increased amount of information is released - the screens sure look nice so far anyways - though the Copernicus screens released recently sure gave me a new lease on the "cartoon" art direction. Albeit good news for ESO, I still don't like the direction they're taking ESO. The simple fact that their Lead Dev had the gaul to say "If you liked SWTOR, you'll easily be able to adjust to TESO" really put me off almost completely.
At this point, until I actually get my hands on it (via Closed Beta or Open Beta) i won't touch it. They've already managed to generate themselves enough negative hype to warrant such an approach.
ps: They REALLY need to get someone else to take screenshots for them. They're either poorly positioned in order to intentionally NOT give you much detail, or simply just look bad. I'm not sure what's wrong, but those screenshots look like they're from 2006. The Theory of Conservative Conservation of Ignorant Stupidity: |

I feel its my right as a MMO gamer and ES fan to voice my displeasure about it. Why do you care so much what my "obsession" is? Tried: EQ2 - AC - EU - HZ - TR - MxO - TTO - WURM - SL - VG:SoH - PotBS - PS - AoC - WAR - DDO - SWTOR |

Thats a lovely screenshot and all... and it is nice news to have no connection to SWTOR such as the dirty hero engine... But, eh... still not excited about this game. As of yet. |

Why in the hell would you make an MMO based on an existing franchise if you're not going to target that specific audience? Can anyone say cash grab? That's what it looks like anyways :(. I'm interested in this game. Not from a gameplay point though. I'm interested in seeing what the payment model will be and how they plan to keep people subscribed with an MMO that has alienated at least some vocal portion of the TES singleplayer playerbase by abandoning core TES features. Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure. |

it wouldnt make sense to use any engine that they didnt completely own at this point.
especially when they have access to Carmack. |

The MMO you want is not the MMO they're making, they simply can't please everybody, sorry. With that, I'd like to point out that even though you say you have no intention of playing a game with these aspects, and you KNOW they're not going to completely change the game around for you at this point, you STILL spend on awful lot of time on this forum, whining about a game, as I said, you have no intention of playing [mod edit] |

As much as i think a 'Bethesda-like' MMO would be interesting, I really think that Zenimax Online doing there own thing is a great idea now, for instance it allows the franchise to grow, it allows for Tamriel to be something more than just a first person RPG.
For example, the books created in the TES universe are amazing, yet they aren't about your character they are about the world and the story, much like the MMO.
I hope a lot of people will give them a chance to show a new look on Tamriel, myself included :) believe me I have reservations but giving it a chance being a mainly MMO gamer nowadays :)
Check out thew video interviews from here: http://origin-www.gameinformer.com/p/elderscrollsonline.aspx many interesting things disclosed.
Also, this doesn't look like a cash grab - merely opening up the franchise, much like FO3 did with the FO universe...
