Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this. |

8GB of ram is really more then you need for gaming, even more-so on a laptop, I would look at 4-6GB of RAM.
As far as the HDD goes, 700GB is really not needed, unless you do alot of video stuff or alot of picture stuff, (my wife is really into taking pictures and photoshop and she just topped off a 3rd 1TB HDD.
i5 and i7 are both good, I havn't noticed a real diffrence betwean the two when it comes to gaming. (my wifes laptop has a i5 3Ghz, and my desktop has i7 3.4Ghz)
And as far as graphics cards go...there are so many new ones coming out it'd be easier to say whether its good or not if you post a link to which laptop you are looking at. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are only using this computer for gaming then I would look at getting a desktop (more bang for your buck) But if you like going to friends houses and playing or need it for school/whatever then a latop is the way to go, My wife and I have been really happy with Toshiba's new stuff (they used to be crap) I wouls steer clear of: Dell HP Gateway
And don't order from: Ibuypower.com (got really screwed over by them once)
If you have anymore questions about specs go ahead and ask. |

That would mean doubling your stated budget, and there will still be some games where it won't reasonably let you max settings. |

I find laptop + ultra graphics = heat...which means laptop does not last as long as desktop.

Originally posted by davc123 That's an old video card and substantially slower than the lowest end GPU from the latest generation of video cards--whether AMD or Nvidia. That will run pretty much any game, but newer games typically won't run at max settings, and not necessarily even at high settings. Besides, if you max all the in-game settings with a monitor resolution of a meager 1366x768, it's a stretch to call that high settings, let alone max settings. That's a tiny monitor resolution, but it's probably what you'll be stuck with on your budget. Additionally, getting a Toshiba laptop is a bad idea to begin with. For some inexplicable reason, they disable video driver updates. That means that if you run into some driver problem, the only way to fix it will be to replace the laptop outright. The way to avoid it is to not buy from Toshiba in the first place. If you really need a laptop on your stated budget, then the best thing to do is to give up on max settings and just buy the best hardware that actually fits your budget. That means either: 1) An Ivy Bridge dual core processor (Core i5-3**0, where the asterisks are numbers that are still to be determined) together with a GeForce GTX 660M, or 2) An AMD A10-4600M processor together with a Radeon HD 7870M video card. The problem with the first option is that the processors aren't out yet (Intel is probably manufacturing them now, but doesn't have them for sale), while Nvidia is selling the video cards, but can only get a handful of them to sell. The problem with the second option is that, while all of the parts are officially launched, laptop manfacturers haven't put the laptops together yet to launch them. That could change any day now. |
