this sounds cool and all but doesn't really sound like something you'd compare to an rpg. |

Originally posted by adam_nox Ahh, but here's this: We're talking Sandboxiness and Themepark here. A Sandbox let's you try to do as many things as possible, and doesn't really guide you around. The main gist is to let the player make his own adventure. It's not structured. Compared to a Themepark style where, especially these days, it's very heavily structured, and veering off a predetermined path is not optimal to your character's development. The cool thing with this mod is that it's closer to certain elements of MMORPGs than modern MMORPGs are. It's not as "massive" but multiplayer is everything in DayZ. Friendly or unfriendly players? You never know ahead of time. And there's things to do together in a game that tries to let you do so much. Not to mention resources can be scarce. As someone mentioned in one of the above posts, him and his friend are down to 15 rounds total for their firearms. They were setting out to fix up a car but that critical scarcity for ammo is diverting both of them away from the original goal. Together, they can hopefully do something to rectify that, and survive it better as a team. ... Or maybe get the drop on some hapless fool for their goods Anyways, the game gives you a big world to freely roam around in, and do whatever you want. The "RPG" of it is you getting to live out your own adventure, because the game + mod lets you do so much. It doesn't hold you by the hand. It's the parent that drops the kid off at the big playground and lets them run around freely and have fun. "I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." I'd agree with you there, but only because most MMORPGs have become so system heavy that their worlds and interactions are abstracted to the point that they simulate nothing. |

Originally posted by Consensus Because it's hardly a game, it's mod for multiplayer MMO with persistent storage. It really doesn't tick any general MMO boxes, it's bit like MOBA but not really even that now. And this shows some of the negative points. One annoying part is that devs don't own servers, so basicly if server admins is a-hole they can't really do nothing about it. There is quite lot stories how people are kicked out of servers so admins friends can come play. Second is server population. Sure it's now big but sometimes you might end up server where 90% are teaming up against others. It ruins the experience badly. Ofc lack of true control means no way to deal cheaters, other than kicking them maybe. It's a nice idea that deserves to be own game instead of just mod. |

He shares the frustration of a great many of us about the state of AAA games these days, where development money won't chase anything that hasn't been proved to death over and over again, or that isn't designed with the lowest common denominator in mind. |

Originally posted by Asheram Yea it's a little process for the install but you go to the DayZ mod forums and look in the Troubleshoot part / or newbie section there is a stickied thread at the top showing how to install the files for the mod. It explains it for retail copies as well as for steam so it's a really nice guide that'll help you set up everything. They also have a Downloadable software that will download and install all files for you, but thats on you if you want to trust that software enough to put it on your computer. I just used steam and followed their instructions. Takes about 10 mins to set it up after game is installed. This mod is definately worth checking out, it is on par with Source from Counter-Strike and the popularity of it is well worth it. This mod is some good work and it shows me that freeform gaming may still have a chance. Gaming is an artform for real as much as it is a hobby / lifestyles and definately more than just some business model.. +1 On DayZ |
