Both, Suscribe to RIFT and play AOC free. They play tottally different so its nice to move between the 2 as moods suit. When you get to end game with AOC you can decide if you want to suscribe to a better model, as the FTP one is very limited. Also RIFT is free up to level 15, so can play both. I would say with RIFT the game starts when you reach max level, the levelling part accounts for probably 0.005% of the games total content. But AOC levelling is greta fun. If I had to give a deciding factor it would be +1 RIFT, as the content that trion releases is unmatched by anyone, always something new to do. Core i7(d0)on Foxconn Bloodrage, 6gb Tri DDR3,GTX 680, 120gb OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, 640gb Caviar Black, Windows 7, HAF 932 case, 24" Full HD Dell, Logitech G19, Rat 9, 50mb BB. |

If you value graphics, play AoC. If you value PvP, play AoC. If you value good storyline and setting, play AoC. If you value interesting combat, play AoC
If you value dynamic content, play Rift. If you value PvE, play Rift. If you value frequent and significant game updates, play Rift. If you value an interesting class / skill system, play Rift.
I've played and enjoyed both. AoC for about 3 months and Rift for about 2 months. Both have their high and low points. As a PvE player, i always felt in AoC like i was missing half the game if i dind't PvP, that was why i eventually quit. In Rift i just found the story and setting extremely boring (not as bad as Tera or AION, but not very good). "I’d rather work on something with great potential than on fulfilling a promise of mediocrity." Tried: AO,EQ,EQ2,DAoC,SWG,AA,SB,HZ,CoX,PS,GA,TR,IV,GnH,EVE, PP,DnL,WAR,MxO,SWG,FE,VG,AoC,DDO,LoTRO,Rift,TOR,Aion,Tera,TSW,GW2,DCUO,CO,STO |

I'm playing Age of Conan for a bit over a year now, but als tried Rift. Rift only for a few weeks till lvl 30 or so. If you prefer a game with unmatched graphics, super soundtrack, an atmosphere not to be found anywhere else in the mmo-world and a combat system slightly more challenging than the normal point and click: go for Age of Conan. Unlike what some people have written here, the endgame is where Age of Conan really starts. Most dungeons and of course the raids are for lvl 80. Be warned, though. Age of Conan has VERY high hardware requirements. Most of the people who keep bitching about AoC simply don't have the machines needed for it. If you are just interested in a really dull wow-clone, you can of course go for Rift. Rift has also very modest hardware requirements. I myself stopped playing Rift, because it bored me really quick. |

My char on Rift is level 5. My char on AoC is level 44.
I quit Rift cause I was bored. I quit AoC cause low-life gankers turn the game into one huge pile of frustration.
Pick your poison. |

Originally posted by watumba Rift is not point and click. That sounds like the Asian F2P clones. I could not get past AoC annoying quest hubs. For a game that is suppose to be dark and gritty I sure was doing a lot of flower collecting, and other idiotic tasks. I found most melee classes in AoC were way too similar, and same thing for casters. I did not find the combat challenging. Yes, Rift is similar to WoW. So, is AoC. Rift has a great end game with lots of people to play with. I can log onto Rift right now, and be in a group almost instantly. Can you say the same about AoC? You can do BGs(admittedly they get old, and newer players get owned). My only complaint about Rift is its way too gear dependent. However, I'm thinking AoC is the same. |

Rift, Rift has dynamic events which make the questing much more fun, they also have PVP warfronts that are really enjoyable, their also coming out withh a new 3 FACTON PVP ....soon. The raids are beutiful and challenging, and the rifts and invasions (dynamic events) will keep you going. They also have TONS of update, and so much to do like.....Dunegons,Raids,Rifts,Invasions,Instant Adventures,Chronicles,Slivers,World events,PVP warfronts, 3 faction PVP.....and so much more.

I didn't even feel like I played rift. Macros played for me. I just pointed my character in the right direction and had enough "skill" to know when to use situational macros. I guess if you like a gear grind that consists of watching a program play your toon then it could be fun. For the life of me I don't know how this type of gameplay is acceptable in MMOs. That said, I love the dev team, they seem like good people and deserve success. Would love to see them use all that talent on a game with more substance.

I am terribly biased, since I've been playing AoC since launch and I'm still enjoying it immensly. I tried RIFT too, but the ...hmm....artstyle.... put me off. It also made me realize I'm not 16 anymore ;) |

I sure can say that, since I'm in a big guild. Thus I can raid every day and get into dungeons fairly quick as soon as I log on. Btw, it takes only about 5-10 minutes to create a pug-group for a Khitai dungeon. Admittedly that's for the european servers. Don't know about the us-servers, they are rumored to have a low population :) I'm not sure how far you progressed in AoC, but rest assured the combat-system is significantly more complex than in Rift, especially in the endgame. Strangely I remember only one flowergathering quest, while most quests are about beheading people and such. Rift, on the other hand, is full of gather this and that quests. Of course it's like with most things. People have different tastes. The comic-graphics, very silly story-line, horrid animations and boring combat of Rift just turned me off. Age of Conan does indeed come across much more mature is one hell of a lot of fun. At least for me and the people with whom I play it :) |

Why narrow it down to just those two? I would go with EQ2 over either of those. |

Originally posted by Warbs I have to agree. Trion has listened and the game is very good because of it. I put many hours into that game and wish it wasn't subscription. I would like to drop in now and again and play but don't want to start up another sub. :) Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. |

Originally posted by Warbs Rift releases a lot of content. Does age of conan even have developers now days? It has 1 guy working on a crafting system that is four years past due but looking at the time span between patches Rift is mist have 50 times the develoers. Age of Conan is a PvP game? if see the other two players on my PvP server, tell them I won't be back. I didn't get the PvP vibe in either, Aion or GW1 for that. |
