Originally posted by klash2def I can't speak on behalf of MJ, but what Blizzard did with WOW was no random accident. They might have not known *HOW* successful WOW was going to be, but they definately had a calculated approach to how they were developing their game.
If you go back and read / listen to some of the "during development" interviews, they say that one of their express intents was to remove many of the barriers of entry that many "average" gamers experienced when trying out the early MMORPGs.
They took the critisisims many gamers had for early MMOs (takes too long to do anything in game, too much dependency on other players to experience content, not enough direction on what to do, too many punative mechanics, etc.) and intentionally worked to remove or mitigate many of those characteristics so that the game would be appealing to a larger audience of gamers.
They recognized that the MMORPG market has the most lucrative pricing model of all the other generes of gaming, yet had the smallest audience of all other generes of gaming. There was an opportunity here to bring re-occuring monthly fees to the largest subsection of the gaming consumer....the mainstream "casual" gamer demographic.
Check out the "Blue Oceans, Red Sea" marketing theory. Cirq do Solie did something very similar by bridging the gap between the circus (mainstream crowds, cheap tickets to increase accesiblity) and performing arts (small select crowds, expensive tickets that limit accesiblity) Just how like Cirq du Solie created a new market of performance art (and enjoyed all the benefits of being first to market), Blizzard created a new market of MMORPG gamers (and has enjoyed all the benefits of bieng first to market....as evidenced by all the follow-up themepark projects failing to reproduce Blizzard's success)
Again....they might have not had a high level of confidence how successful WOW was gonig to be....but the DEFINATELY had a strategy. |

Yes...the Sims is one of EA's biggest all time money makers, and continues to be one. For the record, the other two best sdelling games ever is Pokemon at 150 mil and Mario Bros. at 200 million.

I'm not sure why Bioware is getting a pass in this discussion. I'm not fan of EA, in fact, the polar opposite. But this statement would never have been made if Bioware had made a game that did a better job of engaging MMO gamers. But they didn't. It was their design decisions and their execution that hobbled this game from the beginning. Hard to fault EA for recognizing it. In fact, I'm shocked that they are so forthcoming about it. Truth is just about the last thing I would expect to hear from those jackals. Trounce EA if you like. They've earned it, if not for this, then for dozens of other crimes against gaming. But at least be honest about who is responsible for seeing SWTOR in a position where a statement like this could even be made. Bioware developed it. They called the design shots. The weak performance is on them. If they'd made a better game, EA would be shamelessly gushing about it right now. |

Originally posted by greyed-out Those 1.3M include a lot of cancelled subs that were reactivated and given a free month. Just read it, SWTOR is not a top five revenue generator, why is that so hard to understand? He didn't say it wasn't significant, it's top 10, just not top 5. It's probably not the smartest thing to say publically, but it's no doubt true. Just a bit of realism and you know that TOR isn't as much of a success as they had hoped. It would be foolish to make TOR top priority. |

Originally posted by JoeyMMO The fact that the game is not reaching revenue targets is a good indication, it might not have been a smart thing for them to say from a PR point of view, but it might be a precursor to more and perhaps worse news, and their just 'priming the guns' so to speak, i think by now everyone has worked out that the 1.3m active subs did not represent actual paying subs, and included a lot, although as yet unknown percentage of 'reactivated' accounts that were given 'extra time' for free on a promotional basis. What happens next for SW;TOR .. needs to be decisive, and above all, positive, or the game may well decline below the top 10 revenue generating games, let alone the top 5. |

Originally posted by Unlight I don't understand this either. Bioware is the devlopers of this game - EA is the publisher. If you must blame anyone blame Bioware for making such bad MMO. EA I am sure shoulders some of the blame as does Lucas Arts for OKing it, but as for the basic game design and implementation - that is all Bioware. ![]() |

EA is that "on top of the world" rockstar who's snorting half a key of coke weekly and creampieing every groupie he can get his hands on. He's filthy fucking rich, incredibly successful and does not give a shit. |

I challenge people to unbiasally name 5 MMO's in the last 5 years that have launched in the U.S. that are literally higher quality games than SW:TOR is right out the gate. And then compare success between sales & initial subscriptions to any MMO that's ever been released in the U.S., ever. 1.7 subs for the first couple months, and now down to 1.3 subs, that's a fantastic foundation for any game, what happens from this point on is really up to BioWare, not EA.
I can't think of one game that beats any of these statistics.
What this guy said was moronic, but what EA contributes to funding the game is not as significant as what BioWare contributes, not by a long shot. They still say they're going to continue investing significantly into this title & franchise, even more than they were pre-launch. That on top of what BioWare will be putting into the game over it's lifespan adds up to SW:TOR and anything relating to it over the next 5 to 10 years is looking pretty good. People are basically taking soundbites of what's said and twisting it into something far worse than it really is. This forum community is pathetic and full of trolls, I don't know why I bother with it anymore. I think the game could be handled better by BioWare, but I also am grateful they're the ones doing it probably over any other studio right now. |
