They should go back to this method and then people would play their 30 days free then leave. Or stay if they like the game.

If you have only played for this weekend and based your opinions on this then you will be missing out on a realy nice game.

How is that gonna help, its just gonna make more people feeling like they got cheated.

Helping the developers make more bad games because they don't offer free beta for potential players to try them out just doesn't seem like a really good idea.

I understand your need to protect your game, but how is creating a great first impression to intrigue their customer base a bad marketing method. If you can't get players to play your game from your beta, then the game is definitely not ready for release.

I just don't understand how anyone can say that inorder to like a game, you have to invest 3 month of your life. Its like that 3 month that you just spent playing the game is horrible, and makes you want to kill yourself but its okay, because after that 3 month there is that one mechanic of the game that finally brings you joy.

Who the hell want to play a game like that?

Beta is the new Demo for MMO's , if after a weekend of playing, and you want to see more, then the developer of the game have succeeded in creating a compelling and interesting enough game world that you will play in. IF it didn't, then it has failed. There is nothing wrong with Preordering then canceling. You are the ones paying for the game, if you don't like it , its your right also to cancel.

Diablo 3 made a killing even after a outcry of pre-order cancellings on the forums, yet it still broke records after records.

Would be sad if that's true, because I'm just not going to risk being suckered by that line, yet again.

These games usually only get better if you already like them right from the beginning - then yeah, as you level up, they can really suck you in.  But if you don't?  They just get more tedious.

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I really enjoyed. The quest following the modig notes was so Cool :)
Odd how its always the same posters that bash is it not. And what is 50 bucks for a Months of gameplay. I just finished diablo 3 in 18 hours. Cost me 60 bucks but i did enjoy it but what next. 50 bucks for fun gameplay and being social for a month is nothing. And i love the fight club :)))

I hear ya 100%. This is the first mmo I have actually spent more than 8 hours playing this month outside of EvE. So far nothing has felt tedious with this game. I have put roughly 20+ hours into the closed beta give or take. Once all the content is played out though, I could see it getting dull though. Not sure what the end game even is to be honest.

I note you play eve big, talking to my mate, we are both normally more interested in pvp (well in mmos anyway) we both got thinking, this game and to a certain extent gw2 gave pve that pvpers can enjoy. I think its a combination of not the usual grid style quests and the combat working better if you approach the mobs like they are pvp enemies. Neither are games you can pve in while watching a dvd and spamming a "rotation" one handed.

End game is:
Harder modes on dungeons where you need to take several decks and several sets of gear and are expected to switch decks and group setup between fights.
Fulang projects persistent pvp zone (think mini wvw, with just 4 keeps, no pve, and no 2 week reset)
Plan system from Ao where you can craft portals to bring in world bosses
2 persistent pvp zone in the works
10 man raid in the works
Filling out the skill wheel, having multiple decks of skills, crafting various gear sets to complement each deck, gathering more diverse materials to craft that gear.

Even if endgame doesn't work, your getting a good 2 months at least of quality rpg for your money.

Even though I really don't like swtor, it was probably ok paying for 1 month if you liked the story, just to play it like a rpg.

Story, life of world, environment, combat, quest variety, openness of world all better in tsw though. It's not a bunch of sterile corridors and quest hubs.

Well, because of the level of entitlement that has risen exponentially over the last seven years within this genre. People now feel entitled to a trial ahead of time now so they can dodge a chance at buyers remorse. That is all there is to it.

Gonna have to disagree with this. The trouble is that too many companies have gotten lazy/greedy and are rushing sh!t products out the door to make a buck. I see no trouble with anyone wanting a free trial before buying an MMO nowadays. When these companies (looking at you, EA) start to take some pride in what they're releasing, then maybe they'll change my opinion on this.

If they know their product is what they claim, why would they be reluctant to allow free trials?

some people will never understand it as it seems:

you like something or not? it'S a matter of TASTE.

eg, what you like does not have to be what i like, or he or she over there.

opinions differ, so does taste.

you don't like something? cool, but who told you that i dont like it either just because you don't like it?

you don't like a game?

ffs, dont play it, prob solved.

I had a similar impression. The game had potential, maybe still has, but it needs a year or two to get developped and filled with content and life. Then once it gets FTP it may even be pretty good :) Clearly not worth a sub.

Pretty quick to judge, considering you've barely experienced anything the game has to offer, and have only played with the most basic combat abilities. Everything that adds complexity is locked out for the weekend test.

So unless you are a CB tester, and that CB testing experience is how you formed your opinion, current judgements based on only the weekend test have little to no real validity to them.

Explain then, how it's OK for people to form positive opinions after one weekend but as soon as a negative opinion pops up we're informed that a weekend isn't enough time to see what this game's about?

Seems a bit self serving.

I was underwhelmed by this game every step of the way, my wife laughing over my shoulder and getting a kick out of the amateur animations, stilted dialogue (was this written by a 12 year old?), and clumsy combat was probably the highlight.

[mod edit]

I would however like to see the skill system work out in the end, but at the moment it's so over simplified and linear that a lot of the joy of customization is hindered. Even Fallen Earth with all of its flaws and low budget seems to have provided a much more robust system than what we see in TSW.

If the game really does get so much better, they'd do well to show that off instead of this - which clearly turned a lot of people off. I'd like to see this game and setting work out in the end, more gaming options is good. I may have a lot of negative things to say about it, but ideally I'd love if every game was good, unfortunately this one seems a long way off.

A weekend of beta may not paint an exact portrait of the game at later levels, but I'm sure many of us saw gaping flaws and issues within our first few minutes or hours alone. It didn't even take the whole weekend to notice many of those.

Life Liberty and the Pursuit of those that would threaten It

As with all things Funcom, what you see now is what your going to see at launch. With a release date of June sometime, its to late to add anything new. Game will slowly be tweaked after launch, thats been there track record.

X2

This is why I will more than likely purchase the game. I figure at the bare minimum, this is better than any 50 dollar 360 console game I can purchase next month and get the same, if not better, RPG content.

I hate statements like, 'Just wait until X happens...', or, 'Just wait until you get to Y...'.

The game needs to be engaging right away. You shouldn't have to be bored until X or Y come to pass.

The concept of the game was very interesting but the execution is poorly done .

Yeah, yeah, so I played for a single open beta weekend. I had to hold back the gag reflex and force myself to relog in over and over because the fanbois keep saying soming good is here but it isn't. This game is about a month away from launch and I don't see any serious improvements with the animations, badly styled story cut-scenes & clunky combat being really possible in that short of a time span. Maybe a year from now after you all have funded finishing their beta development with a monthly fee it might turn out but it's not worth $50 to find out so to me this is a loosing bet.

I just loath it when my avatar looks like he's going to break down and cry during the cut-scenes, epic failure, so much magic wielding death machine!

I'm just glad I purchased through amazon so I could easily cancel this pre-order.

A smart man looks over the evidence and doesn't delude himself into believing in something that isn't there. I wish the best for anyone wanting to play this but this IS Funcom, and history has repeatedly shown this to be one of the worst MMO shops out there.

Bring on the flames, I could care less, my money's safe in my pocket!

I hated the beginning of the game until I understood what it was and it isn't your character breaking down it is Susan which is part of the dream and the story. People today need tutorials to learn to play the games, nothing can be done about this but TSW has the best PvE since EQ days it is about time.

Once your get on your first mission the game is nothing like these themepark games out there.

I said that because the open beta weekends are very limited.

Every company needs to design a game with the idea that someone might be playing their game and have no idea what an MMO does.  That means the beginning will almost always have hand holding and simplification at the beginning.  After a few hours of gameplay, you start to see the real TSW and the hand holding starts to fall away.
