Sooooooooooo, I've been hyping the game for 2 years now and I bought the whole package (Pre-order+Starter Weapons+Lifetime sub) before the beta weekend. Now that I got my hands on the game I can say that it was a gamble worth taking. The game is _everything_ I expected (well I did a lot research over the years) and I couldn't be more pleased with the game!

Graphics/Setting/Performance:

Awesome! My rig could easily run this game (it's a few year old) on ultra setting with DX11 and it looked gorgeous. I've recently played Tera and I can say that TSW looked even better. Maybe it was the setting that caught my eye, but I truly liked it. Also how the character models molded into the world was really innovative. I weren't actually sure whether it was a zombie running at me or a player with a fireaxe. Having to target people to see their names and health is a really nice gimmick and I heard this is how it went in AoC aswell.

Story/VO/Cutscenes/Mood:

Superb! I watched every single cutscene during my play through of Kingsmouth and I actually watched them again when I repeated the quests with my friend the next day. Using F-bombs, talking like a _REAL PERSON_, the "decent enough VO" all fits the world nicely. My immersion with the game was top notch, something I never experienced with SWTOR (never hit spacebar once in SWTOR). Even though I was geared with QL3 items and had spent a lot of SP/AP I could easily play with my friend and still get rewarded. The quest rewards I received went towards healing set (granted I had QL3 attack rating items already). I had the XP bar turned off, in TSW the XP doens't matter one bit. You are investigating the story/area and simply having an adventure. I often rush to max level and grind out the best gear ASAP. In TSW I took my time, I reaally took my time.

Sounds & Music all fit the secret world perfectly. There wasn't many music tracks yet but I suppose more will be added once we get to launch. One could say that guns need more of a punch but I'd say that's a matter of preferance.

Quest System:

Perrrrrrrfect! Away with quest logs, more involvement in doing certain missions. Being capped at the amount of missions one could carry felt restricting at first, but then I realised the idea is that I complete one mission at a time. It's about immersion, digging deeper into the world, actually listening/reading the "mission information". I also took my time looking around, reading and putting things in mind I noticed while running after the mission markers. "Oh there's a town hall, might come in hand. Hey there's a placate next to the bridge, it says something about people being hung here a lot before, what is this wisp tree? Am I back in Azeroth!?" And everything I found out during this time actually helped me with investigation missions later on. Everything is true and everything has a meaning in The Secret World. Paying attention, pays off.

Sure I have to admit it stung when I noticed a corpse on the ground having a side mission and my "log" was completely full. But I decided to complete the mission I was on first, and then come back and see what the corpse was all about. Sure it's running back 'n forth but as people have said the areas are quite small and 1 minute runback doesn't hurt a bit, I can still focus on the surrounding when I'm running back. The mission do have more of a SRPG feeling to them but I've always enjoyed SRPGs (and games like GTA) and I'm glad to see Funcom brought this into MMORPGs aswell. Investigation and booby-trap missions were top notch while some missions were your usual run-of-the-mill type of quests. Nothing wrong with that, I enjoy Tera which is a quest grinder.

Every mission except investigation being repetable is a very nice touch since you can always come back to the areas you like the most and you can always go help out friends, cabal members or other people and get rewarded for the missions. Also being able to "pause" a mission and continue it later on from the point you left it in is awesome. The progress you've made doesn't go wasted, you can always take it up again and finish it. Especially useful if the going gets too rough for you.

I understand that people are frustrated with "typical questing system" but I do enjoy it and the missions in TSW are worth doing and very much fun. After all what's the different with dynamic events and repeatable quests? Not much... not much at all. It's in your head people!

Skill Wheel/Character Progression/Loadout switching:

Yes! YES! YES! and a million times YES!. Funcom really hit the nail on the head with this system. I would've enjoyed the game even if it had a lot of issues just because of this system. They've taken the soul tree idea from Rift and worked it into something TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME. I've played FFXI where you can play only one toon and pretty much change jobs as you wish and level up what you wish. The limitation is however that you need to level up every job on it's own and you can't move xp from one job to another. In TSW you are truly going to play only one character and you can unlock every skill and ability in the game of 525 abilities at launch and you don't need to play certain role to get SP/AP for it. I'm going to spend hours and hours tweaking my builds and looking for fun stuff to try out and the never-ending-unlocking will keep me logging on the game for months. Since I'm constantly progressing no matter what I'm doing in the world I can easily help out other players without worrying if I'm getting anything out of it. Nobody likes, especially me, doing something that doesn't reward at all. I.E killing lv1 rats for my friend who just started, that's just awfully boring. In TSW I will get rewarded and the reward of AP/SP will be useful. The way how you switch your current build is fast and intuitive. You can switch it outside combat anywhere anytime and you can even share the build by click of a button to your friends or cabal members. No more scrolling through forums, it's all there, IN-game. The best part is that experimenting doesn't cost you a thing. NO respec cost what so ever 8).

My main gripe with the system is that you can only use 2 weapons at a time, which limits the system a bit. But I have to see if it feels limited later on or not. I know the different fighting styles branch off and more options will be coming as we are getting closer to launch.

Combat/Animations:

Well...yeah...umm..... It's GOOD. The combat is everything I expected it  to be. The usual MMO hotkey combat with depth from the skill system and the possibility of constantly moving. There's no reason to stand still. The combat is really responsive in sense that the button presses always go through instantly or after the latter skill has been used. The damage display is good and I can certainly tell what's going on. The skill element in the system comes more from being able to control two resources (1st weapon and 2nd weapon) at the same time and being really tactical about it. I had a pistol/fist setup and it was rather hectic to keep an eye on the mob-based resource (pistol) and the character based resource (fist) and hitting the finishers at the right time. I even put in a critical rate buff and a healing skill in my setup and it was suprisingly fun and active. The problem is that people are comparing the combat to GW2 and Tera which are way more active. But when comparing into the traditional mmo combat, like Rift or SWTOR. TSW is clearly the winner. I like how you have only 7 actives/7 passives and it's important how you prepare to a fight, the execution matters as well but it's not the only thing. I'd say it's closer to 70% of what you bring to the fight and 30% of how you execute it. This is still rather unfinished opinion since I didn't get to see the advanced skills from later on in the wheel. There will be more strategic elements and tactical decision once you get deeper in the system. But in my humble opinion TSW has the best combat system of all the traditional MMORPGs. Tera & GW2 not traditional in the sense of combat.

Animations, well people have been really furious about it. What's my view?

I don't give a rats ass about animations if the game is otherwise strong enough. The animations are DECENT to the very least and truthfully said I rarely look at the animations during the combat, I'm more interested in health bars, the movement of the mobs, the aoe indicators, the cooldowns of my skills and the position of my character. I don't have time to watch how my guy is swinging his fists or shooting his guns. I can see animations as a problem for people who are really visual and pay more attention to the game itself than the mechanics. But for me animations don't feel bad at all, mainly because I only look at them in cutscenes. Even the "horrible running animation" doesn't matter at all, I'm looking at the beautiful enviroment. This also goes for the clunkyness people have being complaining about, either I'm blind to it due to my biasing or I just don't give a crap.

So my completely biased preview of the game is:

Meeting my expectations for everything I've researched and wished for past 2 years. 10/10

The game overall 8.5/10

The 1.5 points are deducted due to the animations and the limitation into two weapons. The skill wheel isn't as freeform as I would've wanted and the animations were hated by so many it would be unreasonable to take it into account.

To put it all together I can say that you either love TSW or you hate it. There's no middle ground for this game. Will TSW receive enough of the niche players to stay as P2P? Time will tell. Will TSW have P2W CS when/if it goes F2P? Time will tell. But for now I can say that there's a market for this kind of a game and Funcom has created a game that I truly enjoy.

The crafting system didn't feel ready and I left out the UI aswell 8)

But it's certainly interesting and different, maybe I'll do a Part 2 next weekend about the "missing features" ;)

Might aswell include jumping segment. That's just so freaking odd in the game.

Yeah well I'm bit butthurt about only having two weapons in a build and not being able to get even pure buffing skills out of others. It kinda limits the powerhousing at the endgame when you have 500+ skills unlocked and when 9/10 people whines about bad animations I just can't let that fly even in a biased preview 8)

Agree with your assessment.  I love the game and its a farcry better MMO then many that have come out recently.  I myself can not wait till it releases its a breath of freesh air.

Well glad you enjoyed it so much but even Funcom would disagree with some of your positive observations. (Having acknowledged that some things are 'place holders' and pretty lacking). Still I guess you acknowledged that you are biased :)

Edit: I should add I am still on the fence with this one but qdos for FC for a different setting and trying some different mechancics too.

Well Funcom are known liars so instead of hoping them to change something in a month I just get adjusted to it 8)

I think it's fair to say that the animations will be same at launch than they are now.

True, some are and will be improved. And yes, we are trying something a bit different in terms of setting etc. Obviously, it's not easy making an MMO nor pleasing everyone. Thanks for the writeup.

The whole combat system appears to be based on stacking "points" to charge up either a single-target finisher or an AOE. This appears to be true of every tree, and though i didn't see every ability in every tier, this core dynamic remained true even in tier 3 elementalism skills.

Admittedly, this may not hold true of every tier and with every weapon, so I applogize if my statement is inaccurate.

Additionally, the combat seemed to involve me standing there and spamming 1 button to charge my abilities, moving only when the ground indicator clearly said it was time to move. Positioning didn't seem to matter.

I found this to be the absolute weakest part of the game which otherwise has promise. Apart from this, TSW has terrific lore, a nice mix of some interesting investigative quests, and stunning environments with some very creative mob design.

A fare review. I did a lot of research too and so found it easy to get into the spirit of things with investigations etc, those who don’t will give a much lower score, the game requires an open mind.  I would have preferred the combat to be more like TERA personally, but at least it is challenging.

Oh, hi Famine! Any truth in a rumour of a dodge mechanic? Also will there be other zones added after launch, as expansions at least? You do need a sense of the entire secret world after all. And will there be pets to earn in game or cash shop other than the pre-order ones? You can tell me, I can keep a secret. Also, more investigation missions like the white raven one would be nice. Best quest ever.

I'm a life subber as well, and I had really low expectations for the game going in.

Having said that, when I forst started playing, I was like "what is this I dont even", and when I had trouble leaving the Cruisible, because the other zone just wouldn't load, I though that was it for me, but I came back and gave it another shot. And after getting into the questing, and the running around shooting zombies, the game just grew on me. And now I really like it, and look forward to playing more.

Keep up the good work, Funcom, but never stop improving.

Edit: Just to clerify, I was a life subber before I played the beta, even with the low expectations.

The outer ring plus the general spells will fill a big whole. I can see builds with 4 group buffs, 4 CC when people make there.

I almost can't fathom this comment, much less think of some sort of justification for this sort of belief behind a product. It's almost religious in nature.

So many ways I could critique the OP, but I think I let it alone and let the fans enjoy their excitement.

I'd have been terrified to have dropped 200 bucks for a lifetime sub on this game and here's why:

1) It feels like a single player game....Yes you can play with others but for the most part other players are a hinderance

2) Way too story driven....I'd be afraid after a week that I'd run out of quests or at least finish the main quest and the game would pretty much be over

3) Im glad you liked the cutscenes because they drove me crazy...Probably the last thing I would ever want in a MMO

4) The combat gets boring pretty quickly...The builds may be enjoyable but the actual fighting part is not very fun

I hope you enjoy TSW for many years,  but I really fear this game will be off your PC within a year .

I am a lifetime subber as well and I find the game to be quite lacking at the moment.

As I sit here and dwell on it I find myself wishing I could be playing GW2 right now not TSW.

My friends and I had a pretty good discusion about TSW, whereas we find the game good, and some features of it to be what we have been wanting in an MMO, we find the desire to login lacking and the ability of the game to pull us in and immerse us to be totally failing at the moment..

AoC for all it's faults, pulled you into your avatar, immersed you made you want to play the game even if the game was in serious trouble past level 20.

I understand this is still a beta client and I do expect some improvement between now and release, but I am also a realist and realize for the most part this is the game we will be playing at release.

Now before the kiddies running around screaming how they believe in faries start bashing me saying how they are holding back another client that is totally different and has every bug and every network issue fixed, well sorry but Santa Clause does not exsist and there is no such thing as faries.

Sorrow, do you think it could just be beta that lets you not get into the character?  I know myself I can barely play betas anymore for that simple fact.  Even one such as this I did no more than use it as a preview to the game to let me decide on purchase or not(went with lifetime).

I can't really answer that due to an NDA if you know what I mean.

Can't say I felt that way at all about AOC. That game was a tragedy on so many levels including immersion to me. I felt a lot more immersed in this game than I ever did  AOC.

As to the OP, that review is awful. No one is going to take a write up like that remotely serious. Try to be a bit more grounded next time for christ's sake. Your score doesn't even really correlate with your write up. Should have given it a 9.5 and submitted it to mmorpg.com. With the way they seem to review games when they first release you should be a shoe in for a job. I will say one thing. Certainly weren't lying when you said biased...gheesh

Hello Famine...still lurking I see. Goddamn you've been with Funcom a long time now. How is that happening? They hiding you in the basement or something?

:P

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
