So I've been playing TSW for a few hours already, I've done quests, maxed 2 skill trees and acquired some good weapons. So I have spent a while playing the game and I'm not one of those retards who're like "Played for like 10 minutes it sucks."

Story

The story was one of TSW's main selling points. It did just that , the story of the Templars and Kingsmouth were quite engrossing and entertaining. The quests did a good job of explaining the story and showing the personality of NPCs, something that was really lacking in most MMORPGs.

My main concern is that the cutscenes, though it was quite good and the voice acting was quite above average, I was a little thrown off because the lip syncing seemed a bit off, as well as that the player in game seemed awkward when he interacts with the NPCs.

 

Graphics:

The graphics, when compared to other MMORPGs fall short, however there's more to graphics than it being clear and crisp. The ambiance of the game is quite immersive, it feels like it's dreary, doomed and to a certain extent, like a horror game. So though the graphics aren't top-notch, the delivery of the graphics and how they were utilized were quite good.

The animations, though there were comments that these aren't the final animations,  the filler animations are quite wonky. Though the final judgement of this can only be made on launch.

 

Sounds:

The sounds of the game is one aspect I don't really have a qualm with. I lowered the volume in my game, though I never turned it off. The music in the background was quite well done and compliments the ambiance the graphics give to the game's feel. The sound effects are at worst, adequate. They are repetitive, they aren't really special, but of course they're sound effects. Unless they're brutally ignoring, then I won't complain.

 

Quest:

The questing here is quite unique compared to other games out there. The quests seem a lot more interactive, and a lot different compared to all the other quests that we as players are often used to. There are quests such as go kill x or go bring me y. However there's new types of quests such as follow this trail, where you'll have to investigate what's happened and have to actually use your eyes to find out what to follow. There aren't any map markers to help you here. There are also interactions with a numpad which, while not incredibly new, does tie with the games Modern-day setting.

My only qualms are that sometimes I think it's too difficult at times. Because the game doesn't hold your hand as much or as often, it can be incredibly frustrating for players to be doing these quests for the first time without help. It does feel awesome when I managed to solve things all by myself, however before that success, it was a really frustrating endeavor at times.

 

Combat:

This is the last thing I'm going to tackle because it's often the most controversial one. Firstly, for weekend beta players, you're only allowed to have the first tier open, which means that Funcom restricted their 500++ skills, which really harmed my experience. I wanted to be able to create a magic caster DPS and a survivable magic build. Because of the lack of skills available, it really harmed my ability to enjoy and theory craft.

The combat seemed a bit clunky at times, it isn't horrible, but it isn't great. It's modern to a certain extent because you have things such as line of sight and movement during combat, however the movement was slow and the combat didn't seem as exciting.

 

Final remarks:

If you really want a good story that's well written and well presented, then I urge you to buy this game, however, if you're looking for a good game for PVE and PVP content, then I would hold off buying this game for now, and wait for the launch at June 19 before making a final decision. My experience has been enjoyable, it doesn't seem like a grind, however the gameplay so far, which should be a big factor, just seems lacking.

 

Funcom I'm watching you, you better fix this :3

Fair assessment. I enjoyed it to an extent, but two things made me decide I wouldn't be buying it. (At least not at launch.)

1. Bugs, sweet jesus the number of bugs. I experienced a total of 100+ crashes, another 200+ freezeups and countless other issues over the last day+ alone. For a game this close to release, this alone would prevent me from getting it.

2. Combat, much like you I found it very lack-luster and even boring at times. (More often than not actually.) Also it felt as if every role available just... well... sucked. I found no enjoyable combinations of abilities/roles whatsoever. This may have been due to the fact we were limited to like 50 out of 600 or so skills. But the ones that existed were just all horribly unenjoyable, not matter what combination I tried. Also some seemed immensely overpowered, while others were almost unusable.

I liked the quests (to a degree) at least they wern't "ALL" fetch quests, though most were sadly. A few actually challenged you. (Feakishly rare thing in mmos nowdays.) But honestly the drawbacks were too severe to cope with. Hopfully 6 months or so after launch it will be a playable game for me. (Assumming 99% of that 6 months isn't put to use making pink panties to sell in the cash shop and is used to fixing broken systems and bugs.)

Fair assessment, still not sure whether I like the combat or not, some skills were very fun (chaos magic), others very dull (hammers and guns).

I do question your assessment of the graphics though. They are pretty top notch when running at full settings. The combat animations definitely need work but you cant fault the graphics of the world itself. Only TERA really competes (and AOC obviously which uses the same engine). Out of curiousity, what settings were you running it at? I was running at ultra quality and it looked fantastic.

strange I have yet to experience a crash yet.. wonder what build they are using for this beta because the CB I have yet to crash or freeze over the last week. 

For two Ill agree some felt incredibly more powerful than others.. but I found some fun ones pistols with blood magic is a lot of fun, also fist with chaos magic works well. Sorta enjoy assault rifle with hammer as well.. Either way if you don't enjoy the options I don't see how you could enjoy any MMO since most of them limit you so greatly in what you can do.. combat itself i can see people not liking though its alright but nothing special and really need more "impact" feeling when shooting things with pistols and the rifle and hitting with the hammer.

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

I suggest you look a little closer to home to find out why you're getting those crashes. I've put plenty hours into this game and I think I've crashed twice. Sure, twice is too much it should be none... but if you really did crash and lockup hundreds of times your system has some serious issues whether it's software or hardware related.

My impressions iare in general very similar to the OP. 

I like the combat, but I feel it should be faster.

As for crashes...none. I had an issue with a deleted character showing up again for twice; a couple of freezes; the game starting always in windowed mode with fullscreen selected and saved everytime; and no other bigs deals concerning bugs and those kind of stuff.

As for the game, I find it very unique and I am sure that it isn't for the masses taste. I enjoyed and will be there when it starts; will it retain me for long? Hard, as I am not easily retained, but it depends a lot on what will we get after in other zones and factions.

I've had no bugs with the open beta playing on a mid range pc - fx4 / 6870
Found 1 exploit, and a visual glitch with the ravens, that's it.

Oh I do find one anoyance, the way you split stacks, really cumbersome when your laying things out IN the crafting grid, Should be able to drag them into the pattern, also when splitting I don't want my new stack to default to full, thus having 1 stack.

(Assumming 99% of that 6 months isn't put to use making pink panties to sell in the cash shop and is used to fixing broken systems and bugs.)

strange I have yet to experience a crash yet.. wonder what build they are using for this beta because the CB I have yet to crash or freeze over the last week. 

For two Ill agree some felt incredibly more powerful than others.. but I found some fun ones pistols with blood magic is a lot of fun, also fist with chaos magic works well. Sorta enjoy assault rifle with hammer as well.. Either way if you don't enjoy the options I don't see how you could enjoy any MMO since most of them limit you so greatly in what you can do.. combat itself i can see people not liking though its alright but nothing special and really need more "impact" feeling when shooting things with pistols and the rifle and hitting with the hammer.

Firstly well done OP for a brillaint review pity we can not sticky this as it would make a great before trying TSW beta read this article,and to the original poster at launch i had a real bad start and so did a few in the forums,then after a 2gig patch and deleteing my toon and restarting i can honestly say i have had zero crashes and very little lag.

As regarding graphics and animation they have stated they will be replaced but i'm old school it does not bother me much i'm in it for the gameplay and story also i was pleasantly suprised by the amount packed in to each zone,and to my chagrin i skipped London completely so will pop back and explore a bit with my ranged assault blood magic combat medic build certainly different from all the usual builds in other games to say the least.

In terms of crashes/bugs I've experienced my share. Nothing too distruptive. Though I'd reccomend to check your pc specs to see it's not the problem.

I forgot to mention the customer service is quite entertaining. I got stuck in a dumpster because I was trying to jump to the top of the gas station. I sent a petition to the GMs and lo and behold I managed to get a GM to meet me and unstuck me (because stuck doesn't work if you're mid-air apparently). The GM then mentioned beware of dumpsters they're evil, or something to that extent which made me chuckle a bit. They were fast, they were effecient, and they were kinda funny as well.

 

 

Honestly I'd wish funcom released a beta once most of the things are in place. (Mostly the animation) It seems a lot of people are turned off which makes it difficult to pitch this game because of the "I heard the animations suck." Without reading that these were filler animations to begin with.

I wouldn't mind not having these beta weekends, maybe extend beta passes to websites like MMORPG and give them some leeway to advertise your game for you.

Haha the exact same thing happened to me, and then the /stuck command had the nerve to tell me that I wasnt actually stuck and should use my call back skill. Which couldnt be used as I was stuck in mid-air!!!

Luckily camping out solved the problem.

They are most likely to have at least two more beta weekends to introduce the two other factions.

Only bugs i had was my character getting stuck and a few texture issues.. client did not crash and was really stable from the moment the servers went up. I was actually impressed no que times or anything.
