I don't usually post but hearing about TES online and hearing about it's features has just made me and hundreds of more people very angry. The very fact that they are using the hero engine and are scrapping the real time first person combat is infuryating. They've gone back to the out-dated holy trinity with action bars and dice rolling. It didn't work for RIFT, SWTOR, FFXIV and now TERA. How do devs not realize that this is NOT what we want... 

When I first heard about TES online I thought of Skyrim online and how brilliant this could potentionally be, and then I saw the screenshots and it just looked like a re-skinned SWTOR, now I know it's being developed by zenimax and no Bethesda but it still uses the same IP and SHOULD live up to the very core elements that make it a Elder scrolls game. 

This to me just looks like another companies attempt at making a quick buck from the MMO market and selling it with it's name... You know MMORPG's need a major overhaul and fast before the entire concept dies, these games are turning into xbox 360 COD games, one pumped out right after the next with no thought put into it and reskinning WoW and Everquest. 

I do not care how amazing my skills look, I don't care if the game is fully voiced, I don't care how many devs are working on the game, I don't care how immersive you try to make the quests and for gods sake if you shard and instance the areas I'll be staying clear. Skyrim had dull combat animations yet it was brilliant and the same goes for morrowind etc. All I want is a mmoRPG, one that reminds me of table top gaming, because at it's core that's what an mmorpg is meant to mirror.

I cannot believe devs haven't grasped this simple concept! 

I DON'T CARE HOW BLOODY HARD IT IS! GIVE ME MULTIPLAYER SKYRIM! SKYRIM ONLINE!

The OP has kind of a point.  Why are they bothering making yet another WoW clone!  When it has been proven over and over again these past years that copying a succesful game only brings failure!

People who want to play WoW go play WoW!  It's really that simple!

I really wonder when these retarded money hungry suits get it into their heads and just face that fact! /le sigh

History says otherwise and even if it were true it wouldn't change anything. Frustrating isn't it?

I'm still waiting, without a glimmer of hope, for a true successor to Shadowbane.

What blows my mind is that over the last decade some aweful misconception has made it's way around the gaming communities.  It's a common belief that if an IP is extremely popular, that turning it into an MMO is an obvious step up for the franchise.  The last 10 years has shown this is simply not the case; in fact, in many cases transforming an IP into an MMO has added a devistating blow to the franchise/IP.  Look at Star Wars, twice, and they still haven't figured it out yet!  MMOs were great when they weren't popularzed by World of Warcraft, now, everyone who is attracted to the genra has it in their minds that, it is the model of what an MMO is suppose to be.  The failure in this is that people end up with a game that's only a fraction of what WoW has already done; so, they pack up and head back to the real thing after trying any new MMO out for a few weeks.

It's my belief that the MMO genra is dying a slow death.  It had it's highlights in the past; but, when you have a game that involves massive numbers of people, you have to make sacrifices to a game in order to maintain balance; in otherwords, it creates limitations.  The only way to get beyond these limits is to create a game that focuses on the individual player, that is why TES has been so massively popular for almost 2 decades.  Turning it into an MMO is not going to add to it's strengths, it's simply going to throw it into a genra that contradicts everything that made it big in the first place.

It makes about as much sense as taking the engine out of a Ferrari, putting it inside a locomotive and thinking it will have some surprising results.

While I disagree that the wow model is doomed to fail (just because a game doesnt reach wow numbers doesnt mean its failed... if it turns a profit for its owners its a commercial success, and if its enjoyed by gamers its a gaming success).  I do wonder what audience they are going after with TESO.  The Elder scrolls games are built on a concept of freedom of exploration... putting that into a theme park mmo is kind of like making Deus Ex into a COD clone.... The two entities might be great for their respective audience but the appeal of them is widely different.

 

Although anything is better than Skyrims mele combat system so....

I agree.

 

I cant name 1 popular IP that has become a MMO and was successful.

Only Warcraft and that was Blizzards own IP.

 

The MMO genre is dying because Dev Companies keep infusing them with the same old, stale blood (themepark style)

Its shallow, derivative and redundant

 

Im not saying that a "pure" Sandbox is the way to go (though thats what Id prefer), but even a better Hybrid. Themebox/Sandpark

 

As for your last comment, I think its more akin to taking the body of a Ferrari and putting it on a Fiero (kit car) and then telling everyone it IS a Ferrari. Anyone remember back in the 80's when douchecanoes actually did that?

Thats what Zenimax is doing with TESO. Slapping TES on a substandard themepark model and trying to sell it as a AAA MMO.

Uhh... that is exactly the point I made!

People DO quit playing those games and return to play WoW instead. Simply because WoW has a 7 year headstart in content and features, including people's time investment in their characters they can't let go off.

Every single MMO that came out after WoW that tried to copy WoW pretty much failed right out of the bat!  SW:TOR included!

There already is one. Its a multiplayer mod made by fans.

 

As for your question. They are bothering because Bethesda is owned by another company that also owns another game maker that wants tons of money to make an MMO. It only makes sense that they would take the monster that is TES and bastardize it for every penny they can get instead of making one set in something new or a really old one like DAoC 2 that no one really cares about anymore.

Know that you, a TES fan do not matter one bit to the parent company of Bethesda, all that matters is that they felt they could sucker just enough people to make a profit off of what you love, and help make popular.

I for one enjoyed The Elder Scrolls games so far. With there non-linear gameplay and atmosphere of the game I had many great hours of fun. With Matt Firor as a key person on this project (who is well know to DAOC community and is respected) it have potential to be great game. Especially if his hands are not tied and they let him to do his job properly. But, its too early to say how will online version of the game behave, we will have to wait and see.

How the hell is this game going to be a WOW clone, man people don`t make me dig these post up were everyone was talking about how much they would love to see a elder crolls MMO and stuff.

 

Dam people come on, really??  If anything it iwll be a DAOC clone, hell even GW2 will be a DAOC clone. Why? becouse of 3 faction pvp! DAOC was the first and sure as hell wont be the last.

Get off TES and anyother MMO games nutt sacks, its getting really old and fast. I can see SWTOR being a little WOWish but that is becouse of the art style, but if they put it in HD*trust me its not out yet sadly* it would make WOW look super old.

Rift is awesome also in ultra settings, it is nothing like WOW.

I am tired of you WOWtards crying how much somthing will be this or that, but your the one that wantd there to be a elder scrolls MMO so badly!

Sorry for that little rant/grr post. But it is true thou, should of said it nicer lol but still!!

The term WOW clone just bothers me, it`s always used with any new MMO game coming out. Heck i even seen people say AOC was a WOW clone. Thou i did not like that game but it is far from a WOW clone.

Just please for the love of everything just stop with WOW clone or WOW killer.

No, it's really not too early to say how the game will behave. 

With hotbars, holy trinity, hero engine, minimaps and factions I can succesfully say this will be just like everything else but with small changes like three factions, which I wouldn't be superised if they knocked it back to two factions. This is the whole argument, we all know what's coming, we all knew what was coming with rift yet that was a thing and died. I just hope this doesn't ruin the IP like SWTOR did, I am really looking forward to a new ES.  I really really really hope this does turn out good and I reallly really hope they scrap the WoW/EQ solution... But become very cynical to the MMO world. 

 

I wonder how Tera is doing...

Alot of ES fans dont seem to understand that in order to bring elder scrolls to the MMO space things like scrapping real time combat had to leave.  Its stil going to be elder scrolls, its still going to have an awesome combat system, and its still going to have 3 faction world pvp. /thread.

First person view and real time combat was a core mechanic to elder scrolls, it's one of the things that made elder scrolls elder scrolls.

The deciding factor that would get me to buy an Elder Scrolls MMORPG would be if it were first person perspective with the aim based combat. I think that is what everybody had in mind when they first suggested it. Of course there couldn't be all the crazy spells and high graphics that the current Elder Scroll game has, but the first person view and combat of the singleplayer Elder Scrolls is a signature for many people. If it is only 3rd person with generic MMO combat, Planetside 2 will make a better Elder Scrolls MMO than that.

The way I see things is MMO devs shouldn't be trying to appease everybody, that's their one major flaw when creating an MMO. They try to cater for the casuals, the RPrs, PVPrs, etc etc etc

This game should be designed for fans of the elder scrolls series and not a fan of games in general. You can't appease everyone, you need to create a game for a specific audience and yes MMOs is a broad range but then you narrow it down. WoW did well because they appeased a certain audience, FFXI is still going because they appease an audience. 

Not everyone likes skyrim and not everyone likes metal gear solid or final fantasy, but that's ok because they aren't the target audience. When devs set the target audience as everyone then they're bound to fail; it can't be done. It's like the Star Wars pequals, George Lucas tried to appease everyone and had too many genre clashes. 

If you set out to create an MMORPG with the IP of Elder Scrolls then you are targeting that audience, not people who play WoW and not people who play SWTOR. Look at how many copies Skyrim sold, I'm sure if devs created an MMO similar to the way that played then I'm sure they will do well. 

But at the end of the day it's all money and numbers to them... They'd rather create a generic copy and pasted formular to try and roll in as many saps as possible.
