Im not much of a TSW fan, but from what ive played this weekend, the game has a solid pve story going on, its animations need work, but its worth plaiyng.

Just a little warning about expectations on animations being changed : Animations in a 3D game is excessively time expensive. So two things :

1) at this point in dev cycle, don't expect any animation visual feeling to be changed.

2) As it's a mmo, and mmos being the genre with the most numerous & different animations, don't expect it to change anytime at all. Because reworking the global visual feeling would mean rework all of them, and it would be suicidal to spend the little budget they'll get from sales only in animation reworking. Unless official critics would be all saying the animations are a deal breaker, but we know it won't be the case.

This was not a personal judgement on TSW animations, this was just a reality check about animation modifications in MMOs.

Okay, in all honesty I was prepared for some issues knowing that this was funcom, and based on what I heard on the forums I was expecting poor animations and clunky combat. What I wasn't expecting was the degree of awfulness that is TSW.

The biggest shame is that you can really see that there's a great concept here with a lot of potential, and I think funcom was so focused on getting ALL of their idea out that they forgot to add the game part and tacked it on as an afterthought and it really shows.

What boggles my mind is that funcom has been in the MMO arena for 11 years. Have their developers never played another game? Do they not know how a game should feel and play? How do they keep doing this?

Pros - it's a short list

The concept

Potential depth of character builds

Varied Quest types

Cons - and here we go

Saying that the combat is clunky is quite the understatement. It's a mess in every sense. If you were looking for any type of skill based gameplay during combat, then you should run away from TSW. It's not reflex based, it's not strategy based, it's not tactics based, it's just . . . bad. It's spammy, chaotic and sloppy all around. It doesn't do the skill system justice. Why create such an extensive and interesting open ended skill system and then shoot an arrow into it's knee by gimping the combat?

While I enjoy the variety of quest types, when they're bad, they're really bad. It's like, "Kill X, oh, now kill X again. And how about again? Now pick up X things and then kill X of the same baddie you just killed."  Then there's the more puzzle oriented stuff which were pretty fun if you try to solve them on your own. I imagine more challenging puzzle quests show up later as the early stuff is fairly simple.

The animations were't great, but not as bad as what I was expecting based on earlier feedback. They're still a con, but if they were the only problem, I'd be fine with it.

Story / Cut scenes. Wow, just wow. I actually felt like I had been transported back to the ps2 gen. Poor everything, voice acting, animation, dialogue, and sadly boring story.

I don't know how to feel about this game. I don't even know if I have the faith, that a year down the road it will be worth the time to play. If this came out last year it might have had some traction, but 2012 has too many strong games lined up. I really hope they don't release this in a month.

Funcom, please work on it for a couple more years and then release something special. You have a great idea, but you need to build a proper game on top of it. I can't play an idea.

Agree completely.  I left my computer on all day Friday to DL TSW beta while at work, eagerly expecting to enjoy a fun weekend of testing with a game I have been following for a long time.  What I got was an electronic turd sandwich from Funcom.   Once again, they had tricked me into taking a bite.   (At least it was free this time!)

The character creation is extremely limited.  Movement and animations are awkward.  (Jumping is pathetic)  The opening storyline is poorly done.  The writing and dialog has the depth of a 3rd grade children's book, so much so that I felt embarrassed for the voice actors.  I can envision them standing in a recording studio holding a piece of paper asking " You  actually want me to say this stuff?"

Combat is bad.  Shooting pistols in this game is just depressing.  Using the sword is ok, except that every so often an attack fails to register damage.   Blood magic and the sniper rifle was unavailable for testing, as was the pvp instances.

The Secret World beta is like getting underwear for Christmas, disappointing in every way.

Hes a GW2 fan, get use to this.  This is a funcom game and theres a new AAA cookiecutter comming out soon.  Theres going to be hordes of people like this.

Umm, I'm a GW2 fan and I'm loving TSW just as much.  So..his being a GW2 fan doesn't matter.  What matters, is I don't think he's playing the game right.  He's not adapting to it's style and is instead trying to play it like every other MMO out there.  This game is going to divide a lot of players due to how different it is.  Me?  I love the difference and with this and GW2 I will be quite happy for the next 5 years of MMO gaming.  Others, however are going to give reviews like he did.  Because they don't "get it".  TSW is truly one of those games you just either "get" or you don't.

Character creation limited, agree, still beta ofc, dont think anyone whit some IQ thinks that it is a finished character builder.

Movement and animation awkward, partly agree, movement IN COMBAT stance , yea totally agree, everything else, great work (you can move around not in combat stance but the game tends to keep you in it)

The writing of the game is actually better then most books you can buy or movies you can see, the opening scene is a bit more simplistic but the actual game has A LOT of lore and VO dialog for those who like to listen to it(can skip it) and some of that work could be nominated for freaking literature prizes.

Combat, specially at start, is definitely not the best part of the game for now, mostly due to it being ..slowish and it tends to change target since the target lock ain't on by default. a lot of the better combat comes in later as you learn more skills and learn to use the combat states. personally I think that the combat would benefit a lot if the base attack was you're standard cool looking auto attack energy builder instead of a one shot slow attack and when the control scheme is more tap-target lock then the dynamic target scheme they have now as default.

Blood magic and the sniper rifle were both in game and could be used, you could just not pick it at the newb combat skill selection for some odd beta reason.

its not a finished game, but 99% seems to be tweaking only, enabling of skills, setting up a smoother control scheme and stuff like that. its Funcom so you simply have a large bunch of anti gamers by default, its also a EA game so theres more anti gamers rage (incl me , i will not buy the game due to it being a EA tittle) but the game well I dont think its a bad tittle at all. its a very good interesting game so far if you take you're time to setup the game properly. (most combat mechanic issue's can be solved in the options menu, except the animations ofc)

for me it beats sw:tor and Tera (and all current tittles )by a long shot, cant comment on gw2 since i haven't played that one at all, to bad its EA..I don't give them any of my money anymore..

I thought the combat was alright, not as good as gw2, but a step up from your wow style mmo with how much movement mattered.

I've played for 6 hours only had 2 kill x quests in the entire time, one took second just blew up a load of zombies with land mines
Graphics I thought were pretty good, a part from horrible horrible jump animation and shiny skin. The environment and light were particularly good, definety a jump above most mmos. If I could have tsw environment and lack of annoying sparkles with gw2s animations that would be great.

Voice, you've got to joking, the voice was excellent it massively out does swtor in this regard while also managing to be an actual mmo.

Performance was pretty good, better than swtor (while looking better and with way more players around), but not as slick as gw2. I was getting nice steady 50fps in 1080p on my decidedly mud range system - fx4black / 6870.

Bugs wise, I found none, I did find 1 exploit though, miles miles better than Aoc - its in a better state than Aoc is now, never mind Aoc launch.

I like it, providing they open up more areas and especially pvp during the beta (i still worry about a tortage situation), I will be getting it as my 2nd mmo to run along side gw2, as they are both so different to the stale old wow type themepark.

Oh one more thing, the crafting is great once you figure it out.

I completely agree and endorse this reply

It seems so insane how Funcom keeps doing this, you'd think they would have learned with Age of Conan that you never release a game that isn't polished, finished or unacceptably buggy.

keeps doing what? the game ran fine for me. i didnt see any more bugs than any other mmo in beta and i've played them all.

vanguard? well it just had more bugs than a new york hotel

ff14? it absolutely chugged, even on screaming machines, not to mention the most clunky interface in history.

TSW is hardly either of those

It's not buggy, I saw less bugs in tsw beta than gw2 beta. Gw2 is better game though. Tsw is a good game if this were last year vs swtor & rift, tsw all the way no contest
