Im more impressed with what i saw in TSW than GW2 tbh. But the fanboys cant live with that, so be ready for a round full of hate around TSW.

This isn't even close to a GW2 fanboi post. Did you people read the actual post?

I also wouldn't call the OP's post biased at all.

Opinionated might be a better choice of words.

There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.

This is the first time I have pulled a preorder after only two hours of playing. I cannot think of a mmorpg with worse combat. As a pvper, I will stay far far away from this game.

The only positives I found are beautiful environments and the music is rather nice.

Personally im amazed at all the people who were so pumped for GW2 preordering TSW .... when they seem to have had zero interest in TSW prior to playing GW2.

Quite a conicidence eh?

Cons - and here we go

Saying that the combat is clunky is quite the understatement. It's a mess in every sense. If you were looking for any type of skill based gameplay during combat, then you should run away from TSW. It's not reflex based, it's not strategy based, it's not tactics based, it's just . . . bad. It's spammy, chaotic and sloppy all around. It doesn't do the skill system justice. Why create such an extensive and interesting open ended skill system and then shoot an arrow into it's knee by gimping the combat?

While I enjoy the variety of quest types, when they're bad, they're really bad. It's like, "Kill X, oh, now kill X again. And how about again? Now pick up X things and then kill X of the same baddie you just killed."  Then there's the more puzzle oriented stuff which were pretty fun if you try to solve them on your own. I imagine more challenging puzzle quests show up later as the early stuff is fairly simple.

The animations were't great, but not as bad as what I was expecting based on earlier feedback. They're still a con, but if they were the only problem, I'd be fine with it.

Story / Cut scenes. Wow, just wow. I actually felt like I had been transported back to the ps2 gen. Poor everything, voice acting, animation, dialogue, and sadly boring story.

You need to test a dungeon  or 2 before you call out if its skill based or not. You need to play a few PvP warzones or battlegrounds to know if it's skill based or not. Hell ... you really need to unlock the skill wheel to sample the 525 abilities and read their descriptions before you call out if it's skill based or not. I seriously doubt you even went far as having two weapons and both 7 actives and 7 passives fully equipped. I doubt you even checked out the deck builds they had provided at the left hand corner of the wheel screen.

But yes the first few active skills mor3e or less suck to make an impression ... but I know it gets better as you unlock elite skills and go on to the outer circle.

Kill X quests in this game unlike games like Aion where you have to kill them without no damn reason and just to get some daily silver coins. The zombies are different and they actually are asking where they come from. Who made the zombies and why are there different types of zombies. Who caused the Fog in the first place? and why did the people of Kingsmouth die or why did Solomon Island drop off the map.

I agree with the animations ... the pretty much suck and I say this because their previous game Age of Conan had better animations with fatalities.

Cutscenes ... they're pretty long which is annoying ... but the whole story's more interesting than the average MMO. The story arc only starts after you finish Kingsmouth ... and it's impossible to finish Kingsmouth in a few hours like every other MMO noob area. I mean yes, the story maybe boring because it's not your cup of tea ... but it's like judging a book by reading a few pages and saying it's boring. Give the writer a bit of credit ... he's done some good stories even if it's not your cup of tea.

There is a big diffence between what you do to prepare for a fight and what you do during the fight.  I really like preparing for fights in TSW, I really don't like the act of fighting in TSW.

Well I agree that I enjoy prepping for combat more than the combat itself, ala EQ1.  Don't go in with the right buffs you're screwed.  Does this game have buffing that you cast?  Can I be primarily a buffer/debuffer?

I'm a GW2 fan but also have been interested in The Secret World since it was announced. I haven't followed it nearly as much as my other interest but I was still looking forward to this game. I love the setting of the game. The mood and atmosphere is great. But the character animation, movement, and overall combat is just really poor in my opinion. Reminds me quite a bit like Fallen Earth in that respect. And honestly that surprises me as an AoC fan. AoC had great animations and combat and I was under the assumption that TSW is using the same game engine?

THis was my experience too....Wanted to find something that I could really enjoy and find a new home, but it just didnt hook me in any way, shape, or form.......I was tired of the cuitscenes in the first few minutes of play.....Is this really what people want in a game anymore???....Watch voice acting for half the time, do some lame quest, then rinse and repeat??......I was really hoping they would make a modern game on par with AO, as far as challenge and gameplay go, and to me they failed miserably....I really dont see what is appealing enough for people to drop 60 bucks (even moreso for a lifetime) for what this game is currently.

I can't see how anyone can enjoy the combat.

I'd rather you say, i liked this stuff more than the combat, but the combat is attrocious.  SWTOR had the right idea. If you are going to have a game based on inthe future (or modern in TOS) you need to focus on ranged combat anfd attack.

The silliest thing I can ever do in a game is be standing in front of a fleshy human zombie shoot it and it attack me and the two of us go back and forth like this.

Now, i just saw this zombie rip someone with abilities greater than mine apart, but for some reason he can take point blank bullets straight to the face and i can resist every claw and bite attack.

The great thing about lovecraft and horror, is that these monsters should be deadly, but the tacky traditional MMO combat makes them feel anything but.

What I saw was a game in "early" beta and not in open beta

OP  5/11/12 11:17:29 PM#29

Some of the people who think I'm just hating on TSW must have just read it as pure negativity and used their jump to conclusions mat.

And those calling me a gw2 fanboy should just read what I've posted about gw2. Which I also had a fair share of criticisms for.

Look, funcom definitely has something going for them with TSW. It's just not a game right now. I can overlook a good number of things, but there's just too much to fix to say it's anywhere near ready.

If you had a completely different experience, then great, more power to you. You're all set to have lots of fun. I would very much like to be in that boat, but I'm just not right now.

I'm not one of those people who devotes my loyalty to a single game and tears everything else down to justify my dedication to one thing. Hating on things is boring and doesn't help anyone. But criticism is different, and oftentimes those who criticize are doing so because they want something to succeed.

I don't think this is a game that can be judged on a few hours of playing. Regardless it won't be for everyone but if you're looking for your standard 30 skills on a bar and macro'd rotations, cookie cutter builds of the month, etc - then stay away. This game likely isn't for you.

OP saying they forgot to include a game is ridiculous. You may not like it, but this is probably one of the most unique MMO's out there right now.

I had some doubts before because of FC but other than lacking in character creation department TSW is definitely a very unique game with a potential to become one of the best MMOs. I'm not saying WoW killer or anything, just one of the best.

No one is asking for any of that.  I really like the premise of the game but the execution is poor.  It's not anywhere ready for a release in a month.

First impressions are really important....Telling people that the game gets better later is a risk, especially when you will be asking them to pony up cash to play it......For me, the first couple of hours in game are very important...If I am bored then I assume I will be bored later also......While there may be some things that change later, I also assume that many things wont change and if I dont like it now I wont like it later most likely....If this was a f2p game, then I might have the patience to wait it out and see if it gets better.....As a p2p game though, Id jsut as soon save my money and look for something else.

To the OP.. you didnt play the game. Honestly people like you just ruin it for everyone else that have yet to try it.  No story? Im sorry but if you say there isnt then you no doubt have zero personality and thought within your head. I know I seem rather harsh with words but truly and honestly I get really sick of such 1 day play posts.. (again, I dont believe a word the OP said about actually playing)... This happens to anything that isnt the same of what you already are enjoying.

I am in both beta types (closed and opened).. I already notice a change and difference in both of them compared to each other. I wont break any NDA here so what I say are things you can find already on the net about the game... Two things I love alot so far are the differences with crafting and skills (powers, whatever).

Crafting is alot more involved than usual games, which is a plus. I like games that make you use your brain (like TSW)..

Skills are more involved than usual games, which is a plus. Being able to learn everything in the game when it comes to skills / powers is a HUGE plus, and here is why.... Your not stuck with a character you dont like.  You can do it all if you take the time to LEARN it all.  Guns or Magic, Healing or damage.. mix it up, mash them up and have a blast.

AM I a fanboy, not in the least. I know things I dont like in it and things I do and the things I do out weight the ones I dont like, and its been a LONG time since I found a game that does that for me.  I honestly need to limit the time I play the beta so I dont ruin it for myself when I truly get deep and involved within the game.

They're called fanboys for a reason. You on the other hand have never been impressed with GW2. At this point I wouldn't be surprised at all if you preferred any other MMO over GW2.

Playing TSW right now. Doesn't look like I'll subscribe to this. The setting is refreshing though.

I bought it today, just for the single player, i dont know how long it will last with the lifetime sub and all but i will play it for a few weeks.

I don't understand this thinking at all.  The game is unfinished but i'll buy it anyways and play it solo for a few weeks?  This is why we can't have nice things.

OP is correct.  The premise, story, and writing are solid.  Everything else is terrible.

Generally I have to agree =/ Maybe not terrible but not up to what we should expect now. Still if someone simply wants a good story he will have some fun.

I think you hit nail in the head there. First impressions are so important and so far mine or so-so. Propably more on the negative side and that is not to say TSW does something really wrong. It just does not really do too much that is special. Had to write a blog entry about this aswell. It was really interesting to play this game from viewpoint of completely new player that does not know too much about TSW and while there are lot of things to like this just was not my cup of tea. The whole game feels quite standard, as in my reaction after 5 minutes was 'Yep, this is definatively an MMO'.

Is there something special coming later on? Maybe, I'll have to look it up but there is serious flaw that many MMO's suffer from: Why do I have to go through tedium to get to the fun bits? This is pretty much the biggest thing Guild Wars 2 changed: removing the 'endgame' and putting all the fun stuff right there after Login button.

Loved the story and puzzle kind of bits though! :)

I am a huge GW2 fan, a pre-purchased the collector's edition level fan, and I was really surprised by how impressed I was by this beta. Of course, my expectations were tempered by having watched a lot of beta footage so I had a good idea of what to expect, and I will say that in no way do I think the animations were very good for combat, but ultimately I was so engaged by the setting, storytelling, voice acting, and combat strategy that the animations didn't matter nearly as much as I thought they would (I would still like them to improve!).

I am also no fan of the subscription model, and I like it even less here, but the truth is I'm trying to figure out a way to reconcile my objection with the fact that I want to play this game, badly. Not more than GW2, no, but my gaming heart is large enough to serve two masters, or one and a half masters at least.

You are a funny guy OP, are you sure you weren't playing something else? I love game so far, just some minor bugs here and there, but nothing game breaking for me.

I've got this creature on my back.. it just wont let go.

I wasn't impressed.. the world does seem interesting but it's like a cheap immitation of White Wolf's World of Darkness.

I really don't see what people find in games like this...

"This creature softened my heart of stone. She died and with her died my last warm feelings for humanity." - Joseph Stalin
