Okay, in all honesty I was prepared for some issues knowing that this was funcom, and based on what I heard on the forums I was expecting poor animations and clunky combat. What I wasn't expecting was the degree of awfulness that is TSW. The biggest shame is that you can really see that there's a great concept here with a lot of potential, and I think funcom was so focused on getting ALL of their idea out that they forgot to add the game part and tacked it on as an afterthought and it really shows. What boggles my mind is that funcom has been in the MMO arena for 11 years. Have their developers never played another game? Do they not know how a game should feel and play? How do they keep doing this? Pros - it's a short list The concept Potential depth of character builds Varied Quest types
Cons - and here we go Saying that the combat is clunky is quite the understatement. It's a mess in every sense. If you were looking for any type of skill based gameplay during combat, then you should run away from TSW. It's not reflex based, it's not strategy based, it's not tactics based, it's just . . . bad. It's spammy, chaotic and sloppy all around. It doesn't do the skill system justice. Why create such an extensive and interesting open ended skill system and then shoot an arrow into it's knee by gimping the combat? While I enjoy the variety of quest types, when they're bad, they're really bad. It's like, "Kill X, oh, now kill X again. And how about again? Now pick up X things and then kill X of the same baddie you just killed." Then there's the more puzzle oriented stuff which were pretty fun if you try to solve them on your own. I imagine more challenging puzzle quests show up later as the early stuff is fairly simple. The animations were't great, but not as bad as what I was expecting based on earlier feedback. They're still a con, but if they were the only problem, I'd be fine with it. Story / Cut scenes. Wow, just wow. I actually felt like I had been transported back to the ps2 gen. Poor everything, voice acting, animation, dialogue, and sadly boring story.
I don't know how to feel about this game. I don't even know if I have the faith, that a year down the road it will be worth the time to play. If this came out last year it might have had some traction, but 2012 has too many strong games lined up. I really hope they don't release this in a month. Funcom, please work on it for a couple more years and then release something special. You have a great idea, but you need to build a proper game on top of it. I can't play an idea. |

I'm guessing/hoping that the combat get's a bit more tactical down the road. I don't even like FPS "action" combat but this seems like spam a button and win or lose...no strategy. Maybe as you progress in the game there are more tactics. Honestly this combat makes me appreciate SWTOR, lol.
I love the setting and the cutscenes are well done. They put a lot of effort into the setting. It is interesting just to wander around. Lot's a intresting details in the settings. The quests are still kind of confusing but I think I'm just not used to the game layout and what does what. But it does feel like a single player, console type game at this point. I'll keep at it and hope the combat depth improves.

Originally posted by Mardukk I'm sure there are more tatics to how you setup your skill bar later on however I don't see how the combat itself can get any better. You have 7 active skills to choose from and wsad to move around. You can't even really jump back, dodge, or activily block attacks either you just have to slowly walk out of the way of the AOE's or soak the seeker missle attacks that are targeted ones.

I thought the combat was alright, not as good as gw2, but a step up from your wow style mmo with how much movement mattered.
I've played for 6 hours only had 2 kill x quests in the entire time, one took second just blew up a load of zombies with land mines Graphics I thought were pretty good, a part from horrible horrible jump animation and shiny skin. The environment and light were particularly good, definety a jump above most mmos. If I could have tsw environment and lack of annoying sparkles with gw2s animations that would be great. Voice, you've got to joking, the voice was excellent it massively out does swtor in this regard while also managing to be an actual mmo. Performance was pretty good, better than swtor (while looking better and with way more players around), but not as slick as gw2. I was getting nice steady 50fps in 1080p on my decidedly mud range system - fx4black / 6870. Bugs wise, I found none, I did find 1 exploit though, miles miles better than Aoc - its in a better state than Aoc is now, never mind Aoc launch. I like it, providing they open up more areas and especially pvp during the beta (i still worry about a tortage situation), I will be getting it as my 2nd mmo to run along side gw2, as they are both so different to the stale old wow type themepark. Oh one more thing, the crafting is great once you figure it out. |

Hey look! Another cobbling of statements other people have made in effort to try and give the appearance of actually having played the game while trashing it. How utterly original! |

Originally posted by Rusque You need to test a dungeon or 2 before you call out if its skill based or not. You need to play a few PvP warzones or battlegrounds to know if it's skill based or not. Hell ... you really need to unlock the skill wheel to sample the 525 abilities and read their descriptions before you call out if it's skill based or not. I seriously doubt you even went far as having two weapons and both 7 actives and 7 passives fully equipped. I doubt you even checked out the deck builds they had provided at the left hand corner of the wheel screen. But yes the first few active skills mor3e or less suck to make an impression ... but I know it gets better as you unlock elite skills and go on to the outer circle. Kill X quests in this game unlike games like Aion where you have to kill them without no damn reason and just to get some daily silver coins. The zombies are different and they actually are asking where they come from. Who made the zombies and why are there different types of zombies. Who caused the Fog in the first place? and why did the people of Kingsmouth die or why did Solomon Island drop off the map. I agree with the animations ... the pretty much suck and I say this because their previous game Age of Conan had better animations with fatalities. Cutscenes ... they're pretty long which is annoying ... but the whole story's more interesting than the average MMO. The story arc only starts after you finish Kingsmouth ... and it's impossible to finish Kingsmouth in a few hours like every other MMO noob area. I mean yes, the story maybe boring because it's not your cup of tea ... but it's like judging a book by reading a few pages and saying it's boring. Give the writer a bit of credit ... he's done some good stories even if it's not your cup of tea.
