Hey all,

Huge fan of Dark Age of Camelot, have been playing for years, and knowing that a lot of the inspiration for WvWvW in GW2 was drawn from DAOC, I thought that there are a few more things that GW2 could copy that would really put this game over the top for the long run. Please let me know if you agree.

1) Realm Points - there needs to be a way for us to keep track of how much we have contributed to the WvW scene from day 1. It is what seperates the veteran PVPer from the casual or newcomer to the game. For those who don't know what realm points are, basically they are just points (not experience, just points) that you get from killing enemy players, from capturing keeps/towers, etc. Realm Points also help you gain Realm Ranks and Realm Abilities.

2) Realm Ranks & Titles - The Ranking system in DAOC was great for many reasons. One was because if you were in a group and you saw an enemy group full of high realm ranks and you knew that your group wasn't on their level, you could avoid them and save yourself some aggravation from getting steamrolled in a fight. Another reason is because Realm Titles are just cool to have.

3) Realm Abilities (or something to spend realm skill points on) - now before you go nuts hear me out. I know that GW2 WvW auto-levels you to 80, and doesn't want gear or special I-win abilities to outbalance the WvW system. And I agree to all of that. However I was thinking that again as you progress in WvW, you should be rewarded for your efforts. Perhaps set up something where you can get a Realm Ability that decreases re-use timer on your self-heal by 2 seconds. Or maybe you can spend your RA points on something cosmetic to distinguish you from other players. I'm not looking for game-breaking realm abilities like SoS or group purge or anything like that. Just minor tweaks here and there so that someone who has been WvW-ing for 5 years can be distinguishable from someone who is new to the scene.

4) The ability to see enemy names. In DAOC, when you saw an enemey, you saw their race and what realm rank they were. For example, Elf Brehon (race & rank title), and I think that would be perfect for this game. However, if you were to look at your chat box, you would see the actual name of the person you clicked on, like JimmytheElf. To me, this is VERY IMPORTANT in a pvp-centric game because it creates RIVALRIES. In DAOC when you killed certain people you were like OOOH YEAAAHH boy. And when some people killed you, it was sweet to know who it was so you could go get revenge.

5) Death Spam - in DAOC whenever someone died it was broadcasted in a seperate chat box for everyone to see. This was great because you could really see if the enemey realm was on a tear, or if your side was winning in a battle, or because if you just poured oil on 10 noobs and killed them all it was cool to see your name spam-killing everyone.

6) Statistics - They didnt' add this into DAOC until later on in the game, but now in the game whenever you get a solo kill, whenever you kill a hib or a mid, etc it keeps track of how many people you have killed, how many towers, keeps, relics etc you have taken, and you can get titles from that as well. Would be nice if GW2 from the day of launch would keep track of what we contribute to WvW by tallying up our kills, keep takes etc. Just another nice little feature to distinguish yourself.

I'm sure there are others but these are a few ideas that came to mind. What do you think?

Why do you even need these except to pound your e-chest? Especially when everyone is on the same side vs. the other realms. Won't your titles fulfill the same function?

Then again the "word" noob was used in this post, so that gives me a real good idea where you are coming from...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Facts do not require fiction for balance.

As you know and state, DAOC was hugely influencial when it came to designing WvWvW, yet they left those features out.

You shouldn't be asking "Can I haz them back?".  Instead you should be asking yourself why they're gone.

Oderint, dum metuant.

Winning isn't enough for some people, they have to know that the other people know that they've beaten them, like it is somehow not obvious.

In the world of sports we call these people "bad sports."

Enjoy your victories humbly, use your loses to grow and become better.

i agree with the deathspam. I really enjoyed that for sure.

i dont agree with the realm stuff. its not skill if you always have the advantage.

Solo Healer deathspam FTW!  The only thing worse than healer deathspam was bard deathspam...

I have to be honest with you. We have completely blown up the design of EverQuest Next. For the last year and a half we have been working on something we are not ready to show. Why did we blow up the design? The design was evolutionary. It was EverQuest III. It was something that was slightly better than what had come before it. It was slightly better. What we are building is something that we will be very proud to call EverQuest. It will be the largest sandbox-style MMO ever designed.--Smed

1,2, and 3 not in release for DAoC either.

4 and 5 not that big of a deal even when I played DAoC!

Many things they can add to the game to make it great but my first 5 wouldn't come from DAoC!

Being that the people are from another server I don't see how this can be used other than to crap talk to your own team.

I agree with OP. Don't want abilities or anything that makes me better but stats for sure. Always nice to have personal statistics on how good your PVP skills are evolving. Hell i'll settle for the system AOC had with just K/D stats.

I'm sure there are others but these are a few ideas that came to mind. What do you think?

1) GUILD WARS, .....I'm sure that means it's not titled "Solo Wars".  By that, Realm (world) contirbution is provided on the scale of the entire World.  It's the overall group effort, not the individual.  This game is measured on group progression, only are the 5vs5 measurements of individual; if you want to pound your chest about your individaul score, 5vs5 is for you.

2) Um....there's no need for an artificial number to tell you if you're going to get beat down or not.  If you're solo, or a band of 5 and you see a mob scene coming over the hill,...RUN!  It's so simple, even the simplist of people that need their hands held can understand this.  If they cannot....well shucks, they should be going to school instead of playing video games.

3) No.  Balance is a great thing.  More abilites, specific to WvWvW is going to cause issues.  Already Worlds get bonuses for many things directly related to how much of the map they control.  This itself is "realm abilities".  Plus, guilds have those.  If you've checked Guild Skills ranks, it'll show you that guild have bonus skills related to PvP and WvWvW based on guild Karama obtained.  Again, this means that being in guild in GUILD WARS is a benificial thing.

4)  No.  That encourages individualism.  This game is socialist.  More specific, the World itself is more important than the individual.  All contribue to the whole.  Also, Worlds are only interacted with for 2-wweks, after that, no more itneration with them unles paired agian, but that would make names and rivaliries pointless.

5) Really? Spam.  You're encouraging spam?  Look, egotistical people who have no self-respect and weigh everything on what others think of them might enjoy that, but it's something that is obnoxous and would be more of a pester for the rest of the human beings that are playing the game.

6) This is essentially your Realm Points idea wrapped around the individual kills.  This is .....useless.  Sure, the egomaniac on the oil would enjoy this as he's getting the final blow on all, but ....that's just not what WvWvW is all about.  Again, 5vs5 is about this and would be great for those kind of people, but WvWvW is about GROUP EFFORT.

I always play a support role ..... I would argue that good supports get FAR to much credit. It's constantly embarassing to be gushed upon for healing/ccing properly in pvp and the rest of the line up gets no " Good Job's ". Just what I've found in games with pvp ;  Daoc felt like I was a rockstar whilst on my Druid.

I have written this before, but all those things where part of what made DAoC such a great community PvP game. I will mis thise too.

DAoC players know very well how important the realm was. If anyone knows what "realm pride" is, it should be the players from that game. However, just because the realm is very important, it doesn't mean that individual goals cannot coexist.

The specific case the thread starter was refering to, did not require significantely uneven numbers. However, I think at least guild names are displayed in GW2? Correct me if I am wrong.

I don't think there would be a need for realm abilities if the titles and realm points were introduced.

4)  No.  That encourages individualism.  This game is socialist.  More specific, the World itself is more important than the individual.  All contribue to the whole.  Also, Worlds are only interacted with for 2-wweks, after that, no more itneration with them unles paired agian, but that would make names and rivaliries pointless.

Don't involve politics. Suffice to say socialism does not necessarely "hate" invidualism.  2 weeks is more than enough to get to know your enemy and form rivalries. Even a few days is enough, specially if you playing during same hours.

5) Really? Spam.  You're encouraging spam?  Look, egotistical people who have no self-respect and weigh everything on what others think of them might enjoy that, but it's something that is obnoxous and would be more of a pester for the rest of the human beings that are playing the game.

It would be in a seperate chatbox and thus optional. You don't have to look at it, if you dont want to. Those that enjoy that aspect can choose to see it.

DAoC players are strongly familiar with "realm pride". As I mentioned above: individual goals can coexist with collective ones.

Some good points. And I can't see how they would be anything but great additions.

I didn't like the anonymous aspect of WvW so much in the beta. Green invader, red invader ... meh. It kind of makes you into an insignificant soldier ant and prevents people from making a good or bad name for themselves. It's simply sacrificing social values for more potential "player confict avoidance".

Did they say anything yet about wanting to keep this feature or are they going to ditch it?

Pony, it worked great in DAoC.... i still don't see why they could not add this.  But then we all know GW2 will be far from perfect for most of us, yet it will be the best MMO ever.

If you actually wanted/want any of these features to be in the game then you would actually post this on the GW2 Beta forum and not here. Seeing how that is the only way you can ensure that a dev would even read it. Here's an example of a post that an ArenaNet dev seemed to have read & replied to...

I love WvW but its missing one thing…….Darkness Falls!

I dunno what the best way to implement a *Darkness Falls Dungeon but I feel DF contributed greatly to the overall replayability of RvR when I played DAoC.
Your thoughts?

*For the unknowing out there, Darkness Falls was a Dungeon that had good to decent drops plus a token system used to purchase gear and lots of mini bosses and raid type bosses. The kicker is, only the faction who controlled the majority of the keeps could access. An example on why it was so fun, as soon as your faction lost ownership then whoever just gained it would rampage through and turn the place into an ad-hoc PvP dungeon. Some of my best RvR times were trying to retake access to and keeping it while inside.

Unfortunately we won’t have a DF style map when we ship. However, we have been known to add things to our games before, and there are more than a few DF fans working here so who knows what the future may hold.

Fun factoid, that was one of the first things I helped out with when I started out as a designer.
