I think a lot of players used MMORPG games to replace their non-existent social lives in the 1990s and early 2000s. Back then mostly only "geeks" played these games. Geek back then meant a person that is single or in a bad relationship where they had no hobby or activity other than come home or stay home all day and play the game til they are exhausted.

They made "friends" and felt like they were part of something and so they had a social life now but it was online. They could waste full days and nights and not care or feel liek anything is wrong.

Nowadays everyone plays online games. Girls, jocks, "ghetto" people, rich, poor, mom, dad, even grand dad and still the nerds and geeks too. Now people know it is wrong to play too much as it is an addiction and bad for your health and life.

Now the people from the old days of online gaming miss how they could sit there and talk online hours and meet up with the same people each night for 6-8 hours and waste the night away.  Most players do not want to do this today.

Why is this no longer the case? Because the players nowadays do not have 8-10 hours to waste. They have jobs, girlfriend/boyfriends, activities away from the computer that they do etc. The avergae person plays now and not just the no lifers like in the past.

People mostly want a game they can play 1-4 hours max. They don't have time to form a group for an hour and sit there 8-10 hours and just chat and have a social life online that replaces their real one.

I think you guys that are never happy no matter what game you try need to just be happier in your real life, get out more and use games as a hobby a couple hours a night. They are that, not meant to replace real life man..... It is not the games that are the problem, it is you. If you are never happy with any of them and always looking for something more, it is probably a hole in your real life that a game cannot ever patch up.

So many stereotypes, I'm actually quite impressed.

However, this conversation actually boils down to casual vs. hardcore, which can somewhat be summed up to your stereotypes, but not accurately, at all.

My current RIFT guild is full of players ranging from about 18-35ish. Guild master, officers, and raid leaders all have jobs, college studies, married, children. They still want us to raid for insane amounts of time for progression, our raid hours are typically 8:00pm PST-1:30am. I have half the responsibilities currently as them and pull half the gametime.

Your theory is debunk'd.

Being able to play on a hardcore play schedule, or casual, is all about priorities. Stereotypes have nothing to do with the priorities of an individual.

If you don't go when you want to go, when you do go, you'll find you've gone.

Nope, it's pretty much the games. The day that game companies stop chasing after people who don't have the time, or don't want to put any effort into games, is the day that we geeks and nerds can all stop being unhappy.

It's not a theory.

And my point isn't about raiding. Its not even about time played as much as the following:

I was talking about how people seem to want a game that they can sit there an talk all day in, build a town, a house, steal things, customize a character like in offline elder scrolls games, be able to do anything(sandbox) they can think of. They want a free open world to live in as if they were actually there.

They are trying to replace their real life by living a full life in a game where they can do anything they want.

No game is going to ever do this. Why? Because most peolpe don't want this, even the ones that say they do, do not once they have it..

When people do make a game like this such as darkfall then people realize its not even really fun to have such freedom with no real structure to follow. People say "what is there to do once I maxed my skills" since there is no questing or actual story or anything.

I just really think many people are trying to look for some game to make them happy and they won't because a game cannot replace real life. Also, games need a goal and a story and some structure to lead you around to make you work towards tings and feel liek you have accomplished something.

These people think that they will kill random people, loot them, open a shop and control the market and its as if they want to live a life through the game all day long in their head, seems insane and unhealty when you think about it. We all dream about game worlds and love games, but these ppl you see on the forums all day complaining about games and saying " i wand sandbox, i want hardcore" are truly mostly just sad in their life and mad at everything, looking for a fantasy world to replace life.

You can do mostly all that stuff in minecraft or darkfall or mortal online, but you see they still are not happy or playing these games? Why? Because they will always be sad since its their real life making them hate all the games, not the games at all. they are searchig for the never to be game and will always keep searching and miss out on all the fun the rest have in the games we actually have.

I think its people like the original poster that doesn't have the gaming experience to realize that the genre (along with most other video games) has been dumbed down and homoginized to a point where they are basically a more interactive version of farmville.  I don't care how many graphics or sounds you change in some of these MMO's, they are basically the same game we have played to death. I'm sorry I cannot maintain an attachment or a positive outlook on a game that is basically the equivlant of "pac-man with another graphical skin" .

Gone is the sense of pride in accomplishing something and it all boils down to the "Me" generation and the degredation of our society as a whole... One of the things I was taught in life that if you want something you must be willing to work for it.  If you put in the effort you should reap the rewards, but when everything comes easy people become spoiled...

People's lives do change over the course of 10 years. People back in 2001 logging into Anarchy Online or UO or M59 from their dorm rooms, now have their office jobs or what ever. Yeah, it's true for many.

But that's only one sub group. And just because you may or may not be one who is in it. doesn't mean it's everyone's.

If the conversation turned "Tit-for-Tat", and I've stopped posting, Consider it your win.

Have any actual proof to back that up or are you just talking out of your ass? This all just sounds very condescending. I'm willing to bet that many of them have a very nice life, they just have diferent tastes in gaming than you do.

No, I play games about 4 hours a day myself. I love gaming. Sports and gaming are my main hobbies. I could care less who says how much you can play or watch them. it is true you shoudl always do what you ENJOY.

Now that is my point. You see these people act miserbale on here all day long talking about how they hate every game that comes along.

If you hate something, why are you making it your main hobby then? If the games are not what they like anymore or they have grown apart form them why sit there telling others to not like them or how bad the games are?

Its like i said. They have lost the love for gaming and are looking for something that does not and will not ever exist. A magic game that will make their lives feel good again.

They say it is the magical sandbox hardcore MMO game. it is not because minecraft private servers and many othwer games allow you to do just about everyting they could do in UO and the old games they say were so great in their minds.

That is just it, it is in the head, they make the old games seem way better than they actually were, like your first girlfriend or love or first anyting, you always lok back on it and it seems so great. Then you can have it in front of you today and you see it liiek " this sucks."

My point is if you cannot enjoy Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Path of Exile, Torchlight 2, Rift, Skyrim or some game that is out there right now(there are so, so many and so many good ones) and all the great games we have right now, you need to just stop playing altogether because you will never enjoy gaming  and you will go on searching forever, You can never go back in time and feel the way you did the 1st time you did anyrting.

If you are stuck in the past you will mnever be able to accept today or the future.

Also, idk whay you brought up pro gamers, I never watch them and I do play LOL by the way but couldd care less about watching pro streams.  But just so you know its a terrible career choice. Most make less than a high schooler working part time at mcdonalds and the very, very few that do make the big money retire by age 25-30 max since skill decreases fast  and then have no real career or way to suppor themselves after that.

It's not the games, the games are going downhill since WoW....

Gamers don't want effort, they want easy.

No commitment, everything on a silver platter.

Nothing "HARDCORE" I want everything to be catered to me.

Remember SNES? Half those games you would spend HOURS getting to a spot, die a few times, start over from the BEGINNING OF THE GAME. Learning curves were steep as hell (more like CLIFFS) but those were awesome days.

Now we have the pitfall of society, to make the game for everybody, you have to dumb things down....a lot....and more....and more.

Yea NES, SNES games were hard, you die alot and had to practice to beat them. Guess what, they make those type of games still today, even harder ones and more complex. You just remember those to be so great because like I said its your fond memories of childhood.

WOW was never hardcore so i don't know what you are trying to say. WOW was the MMORPG that was made for casuals and its why they had so many players. Again maybe you played it in your prime years of gaming so its close to your heart adn the best ever to you.

I have played plenty of game better than WOW since its release, but people want to compare them all to WOW or else say they are not "hardcore" how UO was in the 90s....

Move on or get out of gaming.

I played the GW2 beta and it is so much better than anything I ever played in WOW. It has a great world, great, fun combat, amazing NPCs that have a life in the game, beautiful graphics, a story for those that like that, pretty much a great game. =

But what? Its not hardcore!!! right? Gimme a break, if yu cannot enjoy a game like this, you need to stop gaming.

Go play darkfall or mortal online aren't they hardcore? See what i mean, you will never be happy, Hardcore exists its just that you don't even know what you want in a game anymore.

So many stereotypes, I'm actually quite impressed.

However, this conversation actually boils down to casual vs. hardcore, which can somewhat be summed up to your stereotypes, but not accurately, at all.

My current RIFT guild is full of players ranging from about 18-35ish. Guild master and most of the officers, raid leaders, all have jobs, employed, married, children. They still want us to raid for insane amounts of time for progression, our raid hours are typically 8:00pm PST-1:30am. I have half the responsibilities currently as them and pull half the gametime.

Your theory is debunk'd.

SInce you bring up us wanting a sandbox, but then not playing any that are out.   Let me sum up the reasons why.  THERE ISN'T ONE OUT THAT ISN'T ALPHA OR BETA QUALITY.  Has nothing to do with anything you list, and has everything to do with the fact that only indie companies are making them.  That leads to the problem that they don't have funding to finish/polish the game so players that prefer sandbox keep getting stuck having to pay for a game that isn't remotely ready for release as our only option if we play a game that fits our playstyle.  The exception to that being Eve, but that is a no go for many do to setting/lack of avatar/etc.  If a developer actually grew a pair, and made a sandbox game with a descent budget you might see that there is a market.  There is the chance that I am wrong, but the only way we will ever find out is if a studio with a little bit of money makes a sandbox.

This is where you tell us all the excuses for not playing darkfall.  The games you want are out there, under supported and rough around the edges.

Plenty of games have done things diffrent, while i wont get into the why those game really did fail ( not the fail people throw around when a game cant keep them for 5 years) theres been plenty of oppertunity for a game like you want to take off and be big and they never do.

Too many gamers like you (not saying you dont play one of these games) are locked into the AAA wow-park hampsterwheel...playing one right after the other keeping developers who make them wealthy while the "good" games stuggle.

Hell even darkfall fell to the easy mode players who wanted instant max skills so they could pvp...because to easymode gamers you cant possibly pvp without a fully maxed character...derp

Not a career choice, but even with having a job, spending just about most of your free time practicing is easy if you want to compete for cash prizes. But I get what you are saying.. The MMO scene is really being just overly sensitive and generally unappreciative of some peoples hard work. It is nothing but a bunch of complaining right now and sometimes for very small silly reasons (The U.I. isnt customizable or doesn't support mods so I can't make it look like WoW, GG!)

BUT,

I don't think it's the older gamers fault that the younger generation wants everything handed to them. We used to play games for the sense of accomplishment (who didn't pat their backs after beating battletoads or the original double dragon?), where they were a true test of skill, now they are as simple as watching a movie.

Sure, I also know that as a kid I used to spend alot of time playing them and as a teen I enjoyed MMO's, that doesn't mean the early "geek" crowd was wrong for playing them the way we did. WE practicly kept the industry afloat so you guys could enjoy your WoW's. My tastes have evolved however, but not to the point where I want every game to be like TERA. I have learned to accept the ways of newer games and I now enjoy them more.

Also, most of the bitching is not from people of my generation.. The "13 and pregnant" generation does its fair share of crying about games NOT being easy mode enough, usually crying about xp rates and how long it takes to max level. Because they don't want to play the game, but they want to be able to say they beat it (because thats the only thing that matters).

Heh , the first paragraph was enough to make me "lol" a little.

Define social life for me please?  Is it when you leave your parents house to live elsewhere and struggle to pay your monthly dues?  Is it when you waste all your money on drinks with friends then cry that you can't afford college? "Social life" is over rated, much like every MMO about to be released that is over hyped.

In all honesty this thread is pathetic , the ammount of "geeks" I know IRL that are succesful compared to others is impressive.  Any day I'll pick a geek friend over a ricer , if you don't know what a ricer is ,do your homework.

Now to the point where we are always unhappy , we have reason to be unhappy , and that's because every freaking game released ressembles one another , WoW or not , it's all the same crap just that some instead of using a red life bar uses a yellow life bar or green , woooo.  C'mon man.

Being able to play on a hardcore play schedule, or casual, is all about priorities. Stereotypes have nothing to do with the priorities of an individual.

I quit RIFT because RAIDing is too time consuming(for me)....I never looked back until just now.....People on here think subscriptions are expensive, try 15 dollar box of diapers on a weekly basis for two years....This may also be why Vasectomies look better and better the older you get....sorry

Developers have become risk averse because the size of the budgets for games today, require that they become beholden to their investors and investors love a sure thing.  That's why the majority of innovation and ingenuity is found in small budget indie games now.  They still have the freedom to pursue their wild ideas while mainstream studios dealing with budgets of tens of millions of dollars (or more), do not.  The safe route is the one that someone else has cleared.  So we get safe, derivative crap.

I find the biggest insult though, is when they blow the dust off of old classics, re-imagine them, and completely gut them of what made them classics.  It really shows, in no uncertain terms, how pathetic the industry has become.  Even when they are copying a great game, they still manage to wring from it everything that made it a classic, while still cashing in on the IP.  Of course, that requires the complicity of the gaming consumer to accomplish and we are only too willing to pay for the privilege of swallowing their pablum.

Anyways, I'm not that unhappy.  There are still a few bright lights out there and I've just focused on them.  Plus, I've found it surprisingly easy to subsist off low-cost indie games for the past several years (thanks Steam).  Now with crowd-sourcing becoming so prominent, developers are more able to cut away the puppet strings imposed by outside investors and mega-publishers.  That's a very promising direction for the industry.

It's mosty the MMOs we've got over the last 6-7 years. Mostly pure garbage (and I'm nit even talking about Asian p2w shite) with some playable for a couple of months. Yes, it's the quality of MMOs we've got.

Even if you're right OP, what of it? Just say I'm a loser no life nerd that wants to spend my life playing games. How is that my fault that I can't get a game to cater to my demographic? Why should I just sit quiet because you say so?
