Given, I have (alas) not played beta. But seeing the last dozen of uploaded vids from beta'ers here, I am kinda concerned about the difficulty. Many vids show people downed, one shotted and wiped every half minute. Now, while I know some people love just that, I feel  more than a little concern about this. Mostly, I play MMOs (and games) to have a good time. I do not want to worry too much or concentrate all the time, and I admit, losing really ticks me off quick.

But from what I see, GW2 in the vids of gamers looks terribly difficult. Like you must be constantly alert and on the move. Hm. I am just not sure if the game actually is for me. After the many letdowns from other MMOs, I am sort of reluctant to buy another MMO without seeing it in beta. Now I would have preordered, but it seems the GW2 WITH beta costs extra! And tbh... I just can't support that. Thats ridiculous. The "with beta" preorder on Amazon was 20 bucks more expensive. WTH?

So, I am really over the fence with this. Has any one probably a beta key spare? I would really like to experience this myself and not buy another MMO blind.

A forum is a place where people can discuss about different opinions. So what I don't get is, how people react offended when they come to a forum and then find... well different opinions. If a different opinion offends you, what are you even doing here?

There are too many crappy gameplay vids out there. It's hard to explain it here, you have to play the game and get used to the combat. You will know when to use the right skill and when to dodge, then you won't die often. :)

I guess you are talking about pve, let me say that is not that hard, just think that death in this game is very different than in others MMOs, is part of the game because ALL people around you will be able to rezz and they will get exp for that, anyway you can always play a ranged class and try to be outside the "heat" but sooner or later you will end down because boses in this game can one shot you no matter what.

It's not that difficult. Maybe certain events or specific monsters need a little balancing, but they're working on that. Overall, the difficulty is just fine. The problem is usually people just stand and spam their skills. If you wanna survive you need to get used to the idea of dodging. Once you get the hang of it, it's all good.

I consider myself a pretty casual player. I'm definitely not super skilled, nor I intend to be, but in the last beta I did just fine.

Of course during certain events, or in the dungeon, you die like crazy, but that's not really a problem cause there are no huge penalties for dying. Coming back from downed is not hard (unless you're in a boss fight), being ressed is fairly quick, and being defeated and warping to a waypoint is not as annoying as in other MMOs.

Anyways, once you get to play it (which I hope you do) you'll notice that dying is just part of the process and it's not half as bad as one would expect.

Downed players does not equal dead players.

Play the game and you will understand better. This game is amazing.

I noticed that there were ground area of effect markers were some enemy abilities would hit. However, with a lot of people running about, it can be very hard to see them, and you can get downed because of that. However, with a lot of people running about, there are lots of people nearby to pick you back up and dust you off. Reasonably experience points are awarded for picking up a downed person, so most people will do it. It also increases the chance that the event will be completed successfully.

My favorite experience in the beta was rescuing moa birds from a bandit cave. It was an event and I started working on taking out the bandits by myself, but eventually there were too many. However, during this time, more people started trickling in and we had a back and forth with the bandits eventually whittling them down, freeing the birds, and successfully completing the event. We were required to pick up our downed colleagues quickly in order to survive.

The difficulty is fine. You get punished for playing like an idiot as you should. Almost every single time I got downed I could have done something to avoid it.

Hindsight is 20/20 - the GW2 difficulty as it is just now will foster good play and good knowledge of the game mechanics within the community. Any easier and you risk people running around completely ignorant to basic mechanics such as debuffs and boons.

(A good example of that is my old flatmate who had 5 or 6 level 80 characters in WoW when I played and the only ones that were specced properly were the same classes I played since he copied my builds. He didn't copy my mutilate Rogue though since 'Mutilate sucks cause you need to be behind them')

The PvE isn't as difficult as it probably appears in those videos.  There are some monsters that will crush your face.  Usually, they have a Very Obvious animation that is designed to tell you that "Now is the dodging time!"  Some of your concerns seem to be legitimate for your professed play-style.  Specifically, GW2 isn't a standard Tank 'n Spank combat system.  Movement is required as is paying attention to the game.  You also have to pay some amount of attention to your surroundings (looking for downed players, patrols, etc.) at all times.  Getting Downed isn't the worst thing, either, since you can revive yourself in a variety of ways...as well as having other players pick you back up.

As for the extra money for beta...well.  There are a few possibilities there.  One of them is price-gouging on the theory that people *will* pay the extra $20 for beta access and won't even think about it.  Another is that Amazon had to purchase the non-discounted 'consumer' boxes from NCSoft to get the beta access codes and thus is increasing the price to give themselves a profit margin.  Either way, it makes more sense to buy direct from the company (buy.guildwars2.com) to avoid any of the middle-man shenanigans.  Also, there is no special 'beta-access' package from the manufacturer...all boxes provide access.

1) Pre-purchasing shouldn't cost extra. If Amazon is upping the price 20$ then buy it from Arena Net directly. The lowest edition is 60$, which is pretty standard nowadays.

2) The game is difficult, but not all parts of it are. Downed players aren't dead players, ressing each other is easy, and if you get a feel for how the combat in this game actually works, you will not be dying nearly as much as some of the people in the vids. It's difficult to show this with PvE videos (because they are a lot more varied in context, and it's hard to find 2 vids of the exact same event done by crappy and veteran players alike). However, this is pretty apparent in PvP / WvW videos. Furthermore, the combat in this game translates well between PvP and PvE, so many of the same skills you will learn you'll be using for both.

- People getting 1 shotted. This doesn't happen very often, unless you are trying to solo epic bosses & don't know what you're doing. Currently, most vids I see have players that are more focused on aesthetics, style, and damage, than on tactics, proper skill useage, and reading opponents. In short, most people button mash until they are forced to re-evaluate.

For example, there are quite a few skills in the game that just flat out ignore damage. Endure Pain, Obsidian Flesh, Aegis, Shield Stance, Dodge, Distortion.. there's a lot. However, in most vids players either don't use these skills, or use them when they provide almost no benefit. I.E. I've seen vids of people using Shield stance, (which blocks all damage for 3seconds) against 1 normal attack. Next thing you know, he's dead because he got hit by a big attack.

The skills that are going to 1shot you are generally telegraphed, giving you an opportunity to prepare yourself or interrupt the attack.

- in short: If you enjoy challenging games, and you like the mechanics so far, you'll enjoy this game. I have no doubt. It's refreshing, it's new, it feels like a completely different game than any other MMO i've ever played. It will take some getting used to, so be prepared to die a bit while you get the hang of it. However, this game doesn't overly punish you for making mistakes, so dying isn't nearly as big of a deal in this game as it is in others.

The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.

Personally, I couldn't find a GW2 on Amazon with any beta access. Pre-orders got the standard 1 day early access. If there is a listing (I am using the USA Amazon), I would assume +20 for a pre-order with full BETA access is because you can cancel a pre-order, even after using the Beta key presumably. Pre-purchases you are not supposed to be able to. $20 to 'beta' (try the game) and your penalty if you decide you don't like it and they loose the full sale .

More so, the point of pre-purchasing locks in the sale which is what they are looking for. I don't think you are going to find too many freely given 'keys' out there. The rest of us paid the $$ to 'beta' (play) early as we plan to play when it opens. I thank you will have to as well.

A lot of people didn't adept to a different playstyle yet or were just foolish.

Easy example. We cleared out a centaur outpost during one event. The next event had them retaking it followed by attacking the outpost. Due to more people being in the area the event got harder, but people rushed off and got themselves killed instead of letting them come to you or even pulling back a bit. Even after we had fallen back there were people attacking them after we finished a wave and getting themselves killed.

GW2 will require a different approach when tackling content over the average MMO.

So, I am really over the fence with this. Has any one probably a beta key spare? I would really like to experience this myself and not buy another MMO blind.

About the Price with Beta Access:

I don't know which amazon you are talking about (country) but in the German one I payed 49€ for the prepurchase version with beta access while the preorder one without beta access had costed and still costs the same 49€.

So paying extra for beta was never the case. It was just a gift to people that prepurchased to support the company prior to release.

After all prepurchase packages were sold out, Amazon placed some links to retailers one can purchase from.

I noticed that these retailers tried and probably still trying to sell the same prepurchase with beta access version for between 85€ and 100€ which is indeed ridicoulos (rip offs! -.-).

They are just trying to take advantage from the fact that this version was normally sold out and that's why the price is so high.

I wouldn't reccomend you to buy from such retailers at all.

Difficulty of the game:

It can become difficult only to people that have no clue what they are doing or people that think all enemies as weaklings and stand there spamming skills as fast as they can.

Depending on the class you play you will get to kill several enemies fast in the tutorial while getting only little damage.

Afterwards however it's good to be on the move and play strategically (dodging when needed, positioning yourself behind obtacles to avoid incoming projectiles so you can recover and so on....).

Usually in fights 1vs1 against a enemy of the same or +/- a level or two can go well as long as they are not bosses or sub-bosses.

Enemies that are  like level 16 while you are level 8 will definately rip you apart if you don't make a run for your dear life. :p

If you go to the downed status you can recover through different options:

- you manage to kill the enemy

- someone near you kills the enemy

- you have a pet that heals you

- you heal yourself while the enemy is busy with others in the meantime

- other players heal you up

If none of these options comes up you enter the defeated status which gives you the following options:

- select one of the spawn points you unlocked on the map to respawn

- wait for others to come and ressurect you

- ask players near you that didn't noticed you yet for help

- ask people in your guild or friendslist that might be near for help

All in all the game is very refreshing for me, gives you tons of options and the penalty you get doesn't bite off your already earned xp and coins. It only gives a toll to your armor after you entered the defeated status.

After 6 deaths (if you didn't repaired your armor for a small cost in between), your armor will "break".

That doesn't mean you need a new one, that means only that you need to let it get repaired from the npc for a small fee.

You can also get lots of infos about everything here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

Hope this helps you to understand these bits a little better! :)

It will take some time for new players to understand GW2 gameplay.

WOW brainwashing gameplay ( you stand toe to toe with mobs ) will make you die very fast.

The game is easy to play but difficult to master.

Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language :)
