TERA is better than GW2 in all aspects: Graphics, fluidity, combat, lag, PvP, fun. GW2 is only a new WoW clone. |

I played in both betas, got to level 25 in GW2 and 30 in TERA, and I can say without a doubt that TERA is better. That doesn't mean that GW2 is bad (it isn't), but in my opinion it is only a little bit above average. It doesn't do any of the new things that it promises; quests are still fetch/kill/collect, except now you get them all in one quest, and combat is like any other tab target MMO except GW2 decided to add in a dodge button. The events are definitely nice, but they're so frequent and reset so quickly that they soon lose their specialness. TERA's combat though, is the gift that keeps on giving. Since pretty much everything you do in an MMO involves combat in some form, it's important that the combat be fun, and it is. The political system puts power in the hands of the players and allows for a good community, and the BAMs and dungeons are just plain fun. Nothing more to it then that.
TERA gets my vote. |

I play the games I like and don't dwell on the ones I don't, complicated philosophy I know.... |

Say it is better if that is your opinion, but to call it another clone is just ridiculous. The questing system is obviously different so therefore it isn't a clone. |

Disclaimer: I'm simply stating my opinion. Any attempts to refute my preferences will only result in being hilarious. To me, the quintessential action "feel" would be Arkham City. When reading my opinion, understand that this is where I'm coming from, and what I'm looking for. I only played a few hours of each this weekend, but I'll be picking up GW2 sometime after launch. Tera has some cool ideas, but the combat wasn't what I was hoping for. I can sum it up pretty simply: I died once in 3 hours playing Tera, I died 5 times in 1 hour playing GW2. In Tera, the fights were obvious. Yes, it was action in the strict sense of needing to actively aim and avoid attacks. But the combat itself didn't feel like I was in an action game. I don't like the simplicity in classes. The approach to PvP seems like it would be a lot of fun. I have a couple friends who I haven't heard from for 2 days now because of this game. I know this is a great game, and it's going to build a strong community. However, it's not for me. In GW2, I was pissed. Most of the time, I was throwing my hands in the air or saying 'what?" like a noob getting pwned in halo for the first time. It was...amazing. If I sit down and can flawlessly execute strategies in a game in one day, or even one week, I'm bored. i don't play games to be amazing at them. I play games to strive to be amazing at them and have moments that are amazing. This is GW2. You aren't provided a template for action-based combat and then placed in a context for slow-mo dance fighting that "looks" cool (this is how Tera felt to me). GW2 combat is cool. Like Arkham City, I felt bad for the mob when I figured out the fight. I wanted to check my fist to make sure I didn't actually break it on the skull of a Charr. I got that oomph feeling. I wasn't even doing a good job of varying my weapon sets. I can only imagine what the game potential is for a player who knows the challenges and the tools available and how to execute a variety of strategies. You need to know your shit. You need to know the other guy's shit. And when you die, it's because you didn't know shit. If you're lucky, at the end of a fight, you'll have learned some shit. However, when you have those moments where there's no thinking but only reaction, instinct and execution, well...that's the shit. This is not an MMO as you've played them. If you don't like to play every role in a fight, think quickly on your feet without preset rotations, or learning new paradigms that challenge your conventional wisdom, stay far aawy from this game. You'll just sound like a noob playing Halo. pwn

Personal opinion. TERA is better than gw2 in every way besides the quest system. However, GW2 uses a free to play model which means that it will make a great secondary game. Ill be playing both, but neither of them will be my main mmo at thr end of 2012. Im a ffxiv addict.

Originally posted by cyress8 Yes, in TERA you can use a game controller...if you want. I was talking about that strange thing in GW2 when you fall on the ground and need press some buttons to stand up... I really dont understant that. Remind me Metal Gear when Snake is tortured. |

Big disagree on quest quality with Tera - this is the very first time I have ever started clicking through quest texts without reading - why? because I just couldn't take them seriously... the quests have no charm to them. Tera graphics and combat are really good imo. GW2 really appeals to my explore and wonder side, not just the amazing architecture and zone design but exploring all the class and skill options too. I love the graphics/style and combat mechanics here too. Both games are really good - they have both saved the 2012 MMO community from the dissapointment of a recent xmas stench IMO.

I've played both and TERA just didn't HOOK me like GW2. Maybe I have not played TERA to a high enough level to make it happen, but GW2 had that "Hook Power" from the get go. It's so fun and imo so much better than TERA (at least intially) that I'll wait for GW2 over TERA. In the meantime I'm going for D3 and I'm pretty excited about TSW :) |

I think it's quite an honest comparison, but GW2 obviously misses some advantage here by the lack of an opinion from a hardcore PVPer (= pure strategist type, 200% min-maxer). Or even better, from a PVP hardcore guild. Because this is where GW2 will really shine. And overall, just wait till those kind of players start to post videos on youtube about their glorious moments. Until then, a lot of people won't understand GW2's potential further than "oh these dynamic events and catlike warriors ?". ***** Before hitting that reply button, please READ the WHOLE thread you're about to post in ***** |
