D) actually playing TERA

I find it odd you keep making the remark that Tera is a skill spam MMO. I play my sorcerer different in almost every fight I engage in. I actually rarely use the set up combos the game proived and change my skill used based on situation. I guess it's all about how the player chooses to play the game. I find it hard to beleive it's any different in GW2.

I played a Lancer in TERA beta and only got up to level 18 or so.

It was very boring. I used the same rotations on every MOB I fought, watched for the obvious "I'm going to attack you now" signs, and then right clicked to Block.

Perhaps my view of TERA is biased because Lancer was the only class I found fun enough to level past 5-6 and by 18 I was bored to tears.

I did honestly feel like it was all just a big gimmick.

I don't think the bias is obvious, I think that TERA as a whole is nothing but another Eastern themed EQ clone with a gimmick, just like every other MMO since WoW that has been over hyped and has crashed and burned.

Yet you're seemingly defending a game that will end up the same way ... make a whole lot of sense.

I honestly believe GW2 is different enough to be one of the first "unique" additions to the MMORPG genre since about 2004.

GW2 had the worst combat I have ever played in an MMO. Even F2Ps have better combat.

[mod edit]

The only 3 mmos with what should qualify as "good" combat are AoC, TERA, and GW2. There might be a couple others but those would be the first 3 that come to mind. Typically combat in mmorpgs is garbage.

When you look at it this way, the argument is... GAME... OVER!

You're assuming that $15 monthly matters to the people in the conversation.  It may to some, but I'm sure it doesn't to many others.  In fact, I can see plenty of people playing GW2 for 3-6 months and spending more in the cash shop than they would on a year sub to a $15 per month game.

I should explicitly state that I have played both games and enjoy them both.  I am currently playing TERA and have prepurchased GW2 (and played in the weekend event).

Well yes, that may be the case, but at least you have a choice to spend in the cash shop or not. Also, if you don't spend in the cash shop, you can still play your game.

With TERA's $15 sub, you don't have a choice. Don't pay, no play!

Honestly in my opinion and many others (good or bad that it takes that long) the combat does not start to shine truly untill lvl 20+ when you start taking on the BAMs. I'm not saying that it would change your opinion though because I'm not you.  :)

I had great expectations about Tera, until I played the beta... I had almost zero expectations about GW2 (didnt really liked GW1 and only bought it because a few friends were playing and there is no monthly fee)) until I played beta...

I just deleted Tera hours after playing beta... I just missed a party after hours playing GW2.

I felt back to the old fashion MMO grind playing Tera. I felt back to my old  fashion DAoC (good) feeling playing GW2.

I forsee problems with my social life because GW2 and (perhaps) Secret World.

But almost everyone on this site bitches and complains about cash shops in games. So, I guess since GW2 has one it's OK now?

GW2 Vs TERA, I guess it was bound to happen.   GW2 for wins hands down.   I will yield the fact that TERA might have a more unrestricted combat system, but GW2 also offers more freedom in terms of dodging over the standard MMO.

The issue is this:  I would gladly give up a little of the freedom as GW2 does in exchange for not having to grind through the quest hubs of generic quests nobody will read, grind Asian style while surrounded by little people with bunny ears, and pay $15 a month do to it.   GW2 offers everything TERA does and does it better without a monthly fee, in exchange for a little less open combat system (again better than every other theme park).

No way TERA survives in the West longer than 60-90 days as a big name in the market.   Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2 (both with no fee to play) will give players no reason to pay a monthly fee for a game that outside of it's combat is a complete rehash carbon copy of all the bargain bin MMOs that have come before it.  It breaks the mold, but not enough to justify paying a monthly fee when the market will be offering people equal or better alternatives without one.

An honest reply and one I have heard before. I actually really like the idea of BAM's and group based leveling up and all that, I really enjoy challenging group content especially in the open world, but I just don't see the cost of the game + subscription being justified by what I have seen in TERA thus far.

This write up was more balanced than I expected. Good job.

I guess what I wish I could have is GW2 with TERA's combat

Two things.  Firstly, what does BAM stand for?  Sorry for being dense. Secondly, if the combat in TERA is not great until level 20+ is this going to put new players off do you think?

Fair enough Spock, to each thier own. I had the money so I went ahead and bought Tera and for now I have no problem paying the 15 a month to play the game. When GW2 drops I will most definately be buying the game and then who knows Tera might go the way of the dinosaurs for me personally. Only time will tell.
