Kids now days are raised in a world of no consequences for bad behavior.  Society lets them off easy and this carries on into adulthood where they are amazed that things change.

If you try to use PvP to control them in a game eventually the PvP'ers go to far and become labeled as "gankers" and they can never shake that.  The games with PvP controls get labelled as gank fests and people start to avoid them.

If the game starts to use their mod powers to ban, suspend, or otherwise handle people the company gets labeled as Nazi's and that is bad for press on the web.

Really till people are actually raised to respect others atleast superficially nothing can really be done.

  1. Kill steal.
  2. Camp steal.
  3. Train.
  4. Ninja loot.
  5. Kill progression mobs they didn't need just to keep other people from advancing.
Granted, the fact that there was no instancing, no server transfers, no name changes, and no cross server anything, combined with the fact that soloing wasn't possible for most classes, did give some incentives for people to be civil, but it certainly didn't stop a lot of people from being complete toolbags.

1. Solved through PvP on Rallos Zek

2. Solved through PvP on Rallos Zek

3. Solved through PvP on Rallos Zek

4. Solved through PvP on Rallos Zek

5. Solved through PvP on Rallos Zek

I really didn't see any of those problems when i played EQ during its prime (1999-2004ish). As i've said in other threads. There was a reason why Rallos Zek was the only server to kill the sleeper. Its because got along (for the most part) because of actual ingame reprecussions.. That was the peer pressure that acted as the glue to keep our server together. The biggest problem we had was people using the $tormhammer server to bypass the social blocks we had setup to prevent the social deviants from advancing...

Rallos Zek ftw

I dunno, if kids are raised bad it is the parents fault, not society or their generation.

If a game community becomes bad it is really the games fault as well. MMOs tend to reward players for being jerks instead of rewarding them for working together.

All the games that had the best communities over the years have been more social than the ones with bad communities, that can't be a coincidense.

I'm not sure, ~ Yeah we could stop raging, and try to ignore them, but would that work? Would they just stop, give up, and go away?

find them and shoot them.

There are many reasons for the communities being more toxic.

Voice Chat, PVP Focus, Solo Focus, Strong Guilds and even the current culture in general

There are things that could help fix it though:

1) Every time someone puts you on ignore you should get a status message that you were ignored by someone.   This could stop people from going off the deep end.

2) Some kind of system that rewards people for being helpful

3) More Chat Channels than just region guild world and local and possibly level ranges.  If there were dedicated help and newbie and other channels it would be better.

@Adalwulf

Right, because the only games with bad communities are blizzard games. Suuuuure.

They arent eventhe worst offenders. By far.

Most sandbox full loot PvP games have far more vile communities than anything blizzard makes. That's a fact.

All the people who can't get around in real life because there they get their butt kiced. Basically you just need to do the same, in one way or another, in your gaming community.

But it's funny that you say it in a forum which has exactly that problem.

You know, i work in Law Enforcement, and it always boggles my mind when i meet someone during while working thats in their 40s, and still runs their mouths to strangers, and then they finally get their first assault.. and usually by that point it's also their last because once you get into that age, people become more erractic with their violent responses.

For example, i was dealing with this guy who was in his 40s, small guy no more then 160 lbs, (He made a funny statement about me bullying him because my arms were bigger then his legs), he ran his mouth to his neighbor about something and the neighbor decided to take a Louiville Sluggar to his head... now heres this guy in the hospital, mouthing off to the nurses, and a fellow officer.. hes wearing a helmet similar to a football helmet, because of his traumatic brain injury, part of his skull was removed, his head sewn back together, staples running the length of his entire head, and here he is STILL running his mouth to people physically superior to him even if he was in 100% perfect health, but hes not.. hes half dead, and the people caring for him are the targets of his real-life trolling.. it boggles my mind how vile poeple can be, and it's not to just other people they are screwing themselves ~ You know why? Guess what we did with him - We handcuffed him to the bed, since he couldn't get out of bed to use the bathroom, he got a catherter stuck down his penis so he would be automaticlly drained of any urine, it's very painful process... done by the nurse he bad mouthed, and she chose to use a bigger tube then required, and used less luberication then she should could have... See how his actions hurt himself more then anything.

Why can't internet trolls realize the same thing... you are destorying not just communities but your own communities.. who will you troll when people get so jaded to MMOGs that they return to offline- SP games?

I guess the real problem is that troll is like cancer, one person on three will have.

Nobody thinks, Hey i might have cancer and it's always the other one.

As a second similarity, cancer is not a classical desease but the body of a person create it, like the body of gamer would create trolls.

It's not possible to fight it, just accept it and go on, take the good and leave the bad, you might end up trolling about trolls otherwise.

cancer isn't just accepted, you remove the tumor, or use kemo to shrink cancerous cells (at a cost to the body), and of course your lifestyle can prevent it all together.

Ergo, Remove the trolls, or radiate the entire community, sure a few innocents might get caught up in it, but the means justifies the end.

Best tactic? PREVENT THEM ~

Everyone hated on Blizzard's Real ID system, but i bet if that went through trolls would be gone.

If companies came together, and created a partnership with "Master-Game-Accounts" requiring personal information that would NOT be shared, that account would act like a Bnet master account ~ Ergo your rep as a troll would affect your other games... or something of the like... communities can -not- police their own, we need more support from the companies involved.

I'm not disagreeing at all, lol ~ My job was to Handcuff because he was being erratic, and making the staff feel unsafe, once my job was done, i was just there to make sure he didn't kick her while he got tubed (Holding his legs), shes the one who chose to make him pay for his behavior -.-

Heh, good idea. Ask for advice on how to deal with toxic communities from an extremely toxic community!

I don't think we can change games. It's out of our hands. Maybe we could start by working on the community around here a little bit? No? Just a thought, carry on.

Look man, I'm not saying that certain people have no place in this world... but we have to be responsible for each other so we can keep our environment "live-able, and we should not give individuals a chance to go too far. People who don't know their limits need to know their limits, even if they can't stick to it.

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

Get a nice guild, play with them, ignore everyone else.

The culture is to set to realistically hope for anything else in 99% of games.

ANet are doing the most to solve the issue though as far as I can see... by removing the ability to grief (shared rewards and co-op based play) and uniting each server behind a common cause (WvW). If they are successful in making a better wider community, or just killing it entirely (with no one ever being bothered to even talk to anyone outside their guild) we shall see.

My general advice though if you want a decent community is too choose an older game, make it a PvE focused one, and go to a US server (if you are EU).

The WORST communities, in my experience, are EU PvP ones in new games... just horrible.

If everyone segmented themselves in their guild & didn't interact with anyone else you don't really have a community at all. you have a cliche (and we all know how well those groups do in schools etc)

As far as communities. From my point of view the number one problem is lack of consequences. In full PVE games the social deviants are free to run their mouths all day. sure you can put em on ignore but they just make a new character and the cycle repeats. PVP games that rate pvp or give rewards outside of the actual kill also suffer from toxic communities because you are killing the other players for the sake of killing.

In my mind why EQ on Rallos Zek worked the best is although we had "item loot" (actually 1 item not in a bag, in the weapon slots that wasn't no drop), most people wore non lootable gear so it really didn't matter much. Sure you could loot the players coins but that is why you learned to bank early. But the point is outside of those incentives.. You really didn't have a reason to just randomly gank the average person. And if you managed to piss off the wrong person by attacking their alt or the alt of a guildmate/friend were you willing to deal with the reprecussions (including getting corpse camped and being unable to actually get your gear back as gear was left on your corpse when you died)

Theres a reason WoW made the most illogical from a rp standpoint but logical from an anti-griefing standpoint to make the factions not able to communicate. Its because when you give people free reign to be a jerk. they will take you up on that offer.

There just needs to be features in game that allows players to punish trolls / bad people. I remember abusing some guy in Darkfall and I didn't realize who he was, it turned out he was a guild leader of a big guild and ended up bringing a whole bunch of guys and destroying all of our city walls. I learnt my lesson.

Unfortunately most MMORPGs are for carebears so these sorts of features will never be implemented.

Online "team" games such as Tribes Ascend and League of Legends:  Nothing you can do about it really, short of leaving the game (which penalizes you in some games such as LoL and others like Tribes not so much) or trying to ignore the offender.  Since the offender can go out of their way to grief you in these games it can be really toxic to everyone involved in their griefing.  Another possible solution is to only play in full teams when possible.  Your opponents thankfully you can just ignore.

MMORPGs are much easier.  Join a guild or more mature adult community.  Don't play MMORPGs that allow other players to grief you.  There are plenty of MMOs (though mostly limited to all themepark PvE based) that allow you to pretty much group with your guild/clan/community and your guild alone and not having to worry about various problems community outside of your specific guild can cause.  GW2 takes it a step further where not only can you not really grief anyone in any way, but cooperation with others is actually highly rewarding and it has the standard ignore feature in place if a player becomes a problem.

Raptr link because it's the cool new trend:
