I was expecting too much this weekend. I came in expecting a game with ground-breaking new PvE concepts with the dynamic events. I was expecting PvP that offered strategy and thinking, instead I got PvP that involved rolling your face on the keyboard and still killing people.

I guess new MMO players enjoy this style of combat. The thoughtless button-mashing where no matter what skill you mash in PvE it works. I heard people say the game was difficult but how can a game be difficult when the skill you use at the start of the game is just as viable 20 hours into the game?

I'll be playing because the PvP has potential, but the combat system in this game is awful. Anyone who likes it really needs to break it down and look at it. But to be completely honest, if this game were pay to play, I'd be skipping it the same as I am skipping TERA. At least TERA had an innovative combat system...

I'd love to see a poll on what people thought of the first beta weekend.

I was amazed with the game and to be honest i already played tera , and i prefer the combat in guild wars 2, in gw2 you can cast everything while moving, in there you must stop to use any ability.

So yeah gw2 is better than sliced bread

It is a good game, but not as much as it is hyped.  I like it, and it is good that it is free to play.  However, It isnt what I thought it would be.  Maybe I just need to take more time to get used to it.

I do enjoy Tera a lot more than Guild Wars at the moment.

I know this boarders on heresy, but I found it  ...underwhelming.

It was simply travel from point on map to point on map, do the quest there, (Kill 10 of X, gather 10 of Y), and move on.  Sometimes something different would pop up, like escort a merchant, but for the most part it was just grind, grind, grind after a while.  (Now, granted, that's MMOs in a nutshell)

The classes are fun for the most part, some, like the melee classes, tended to be a bit thin on game play.  Engineer was fun, just because once you leveled up a bit you could play around with kits, (mine, bomb, flamethrower, etc.) to find one that worked best for you.

Didn't play any magic user classes, but others that did said they played pretty much the same way as an engineer.  Some of the graphics for the attacks are the the same exact animation, just different color!

Crafting looked like it could be fun, nothing new, nothing to get excited about, but still a bit of fun.  Finding the recipes I think will be as much of the crafting game as actually making anything.

The way to 'customize' your character in GW 2 is weapons.  Each class can use certain weapons, and each weapon has different attacks or defensive abilities.  Not a lot mind you, One handed weapons only had 3, 2 handed weapons only had 5, and off hand weapons only had 2.  You never had more then 5 attack options at any one time.  I think that more then anything this limitation was the joy killer for me.

A neat option was you could have 2 weapon loadouts, and swap them on the fly, (My engineer would use a rifle, but when things got close, he would switch to pistol and shield), which stretched the options a bit.

Every 10 levels you unlock a skill slot.  Skill points are earned as you level and complete some challange quests, and you buy skills with this.  Most skills are simply buffs, attacks, or heals, some actually replace your weapon attack options.  (For example, the engineer flamethrower skill, when it was active, replaced your weapon with a short ranged flamethrower with it's own attacks)

All in all, I found it very slow at first, however it picked up some when you got more skill options and crafting started to come into it's own.  It just never seemed to pick up very much.

I would honestly say GW2 is fun for a bit, but doesn't look like it has a lot of staying power, nothing to keep you coming back.  If I had played it before I pre-ordered, I really don't think I would have bought it.  There are just too many other games that have better hooks.

I would rate it a solid 6, maybe a weak 7.  Slow first couple hours, next couple hours it gets fun, then it all starts to just blur together and become... meh.

My poll response:  * Not what you expected *  (In a dissapointed way)

Uhm, what? That makes no sense whatsoever.

You don't like it, that is fine but that does not make it a bad system.

I thought it was pretty fun myself.

BOW DOWN BEFORE THE GOD OF DEATH!

I think anyone who 'really' followed the game through development knew what to expect realistically and got what they wanted from it.

I got just that. Theres been 3 big longterm MMOs in my life: Asheron's Call, Guild Wars (yes yes not an mmo, who cares?) and LOTRO (Pre-FTP). I've played WoW a lot as well but I don't class it as one of my biggies... more into the lore than anything with that one.

GW2 is definately going to be added to that list.

Its not a bad game at all infact its pretty well done but at the end of it all its just another themepark game with a couple of little changes to the way some things work.. The combat system is basically your average tab system with a few tweaks nothing world changing thats for sure. .but it works and flows well..

So in a way yes the OP is right the game had not lived up to its hype not at all.. but he is also being very harsh.. its not a bad game at all just nothing really new..

*What I expected

I expected another new wow clone with "groundbreaking features" and better graphics.

*What is was

Another new wow clone with "groundbreaking features" and better graphics. Turns out it had server and other issues aswell.

*Summary

Someone make a good sandbox game! Please! Surely developers can see now is the time for inovation among this minefield of wow clones. I am looking forward to http://www.embersofcaerus.com/ and Archaeage (it will do for the time being) but any new sandbox games on the horizon is good news.

--EDIT--

I put "groundbreaking features" in quotation marks to show I am being sarcastic.

Maybe the GW2 forums should have a subdirectory for all "This is boring old stuff, TERA is so much better!"-threads.

I think the game truly lives up to the hype. So many things you can do, that are great fun, and it is up to you, what you want to do. The game looks beautiful and very polished already.

The only doubt I have is: What about lvl 20-80? Will it get better (like everbody expects)? Or will it be just like with so many other MMOs - great starter areas, while the rest of the game has a rather poor quality.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.

GW2 is a very well done game, I dont think a game exists or will that can live up to the hype players generate for it.

But GW2 gave it one hell of a go!

From all I read about this game before the beta, what I saw was what I expected and I very much enjoyed my beta experience.

I clearly put "groundbreaking features" in quotation marks because that is what all the developers and fanboys say, yet it is the exact same rubbish recycled over and over.

Content wise: as expected; a themepark game with some new flavors, breaking the mold only in appearance but like in any other themepark, very much centered on premade content. WvW being the only exception even though world pvp in such a setting (with dedicated objectives, strict mechanics and npc's to defeat) still has it's themeparky aspects.

Immersion wise: better than expected: stunning surroundings, vast and lively cities and sound & music are jawdropping occasionaly.

Yeah that makes no sense so just because i was understanding the theif system and useing neat combo' s and traps and scorpion wire skill to get the mobs into the trap, then shadow step leave mark roll out switch weps as i was mainly pistol off hand dagger i then had the powershot on my pistol or then switch back on the fly into melle while dodgeing and useing healing dodge etc... and the myriad of skills u nick from the mobs is way cool as well.

You see where i'm going here each class has it's own unique diverse systems and by God so fun to play and that was one weapon set with a few utility skills, switching to dual pistols then gave me a rapid fire shot  the diversity is pretty staggering and one of the best systems i've seen since Vanguard, also tried engineer and thought that was way fun as well.

I went into GW2 expecting a game that was fun to play and good to look at and listen to. It delivered, and then some more.

I've been following it since the early days, and I've been making up my own mind about it based on what I see and what ANet have delivered in the past, so the hype that has grown up around it in the last couple of years hasn't really swayed me. I expected flaws, and found them. I expected fun, and I found that too, in pleny of large helpings.

But you know what? No game will suit everyone, and that's okay. I'm sorry you din't really enjoy the game very much, but not every game will please you. I've bought games that I haven't enjoyed, but I don't think that's a fault of the game. It's simply a matter of them not being my taste.

(Actually, my biggest disappointment was Skyrim, because the way they have the camera gives me motion sickness and I can't play it for more than about ten minutes at a time before I feel physically sick. So I know what it's like to be excited about something and then let down. But that doesn't mean Skyrim is a terrible game.)

Reality Bites. I'm only Barking
