It's big, but not empty - there is stuff to do almost everywhere. Also, they have said that they intend expansions to add to existing areas rather than adding new zones, so there will always be stuff to discover - you won't 'outgrow' zones like a lot of MMOs.

I agree with the OP - this game looks huge. I swear you could hear my jaw drop as I started exploring the Charr home city (I was a norn). Un-freaking believable! Even better was that the cities were believable. there were women and children in lots of places and houses for people. These cities dwarfed WOW and made Rift and SWTOR cities look like jokes.

Thinking back on the weekend I realized that I've only seen just a smidgeon of the game. The cities are amazing and better than any other MMORPG I've ever played - we had no lag in any of the cities - I can't remember a time where you could say that in other games. The cities are also alive - not just with stand around NPCs (there are some), but wandering ones - even pestering ones jumping in front of you trying to tell you something. I didn't get above level 7 on any of the many characters I made - but I tried out each starter area a bit. At the end of beta event the zerg was rushing all over the Norn starter area and I was like are we still in the starter zone? I hadn't seen even half of it while levelling. To put it in perspective - I really think Queensdale (human starter area) is twice the size of the Shire in LOTRO with like four times the content. I use the Shire as a comparison because it is level 1-15 just like Queensdale.

I thought I discovered a good chunk of the entire bwe map. Boy I was SO WRONG! I got to level 24, explored each of the homelands for the three different races, and got to Lion's Arch. Still, I looked at the gw2 database map, and I didn't even come close to seeing it all! I fought the Shadow Behemoth, the Champion Giant, a Giant Wurm, a Giant Ice Monster, and countless minibosses in just a couple days!

Originally posted by paulytheb Although I appreciated the vastness of the world initially (and it does look fantastic), it eventually became incredibly annoying. I found myself playing global ping pong in the end - jumping from waypoint to waypoint. Even within one city it was tedious to get around, speed buff and all. Having said that, the various dynamic events that popped up did provide some distraction from the slow overland crawl. Otherwise, fantastic! |

I pre-ordered the game but I refuse to try the betas because I want to avoid the burn out I experienced during the Rift and SWTOR betas. I would like to ask how varied were the intial zones ? I know everyone is extremely excited for the size of these areas but for me I tend to get really bored if I stay in one mmo zone too long. If I have to be in a zone for 15+ hours does it offer a variety of locals? If the first Norn area is nothing but snow and ice caves ill be bored out of my mind by the fifth hour. Can anyone confirm that each zone is varied enough to keep someone like me interested? Playing: GW2 |

Game is indeed huge. I cleared 100% of the first two maps for both Human and Norn, including their respective towns, cleared all of LA, looked at my map and saw only 18% completion of the world. That's just to start. Every GW1 expansion was at least the size of the original game, making it 3x as big as it started by Nightfall. People who like exploring should certainly have plenty of exploring to do.

The world feels big b/c it's varied and filled with detail. Most games have forest zones. You will find there a forest, a hut, a rive and a cave. In GW2 you have in 1 map a forest with all those things, a swamp, a town, a hamlet, a village with farms, a lake, another forest with different trees. GW2 is big b/c it's simply filled wioth incredible amount of detail. They made so many assets for this game. it's really impressive.

To paraphrase a popular guidebook: Guild Wars 2 is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to Guild Wars 2. +100 if you can name the guidebook ;) Cluck Cluck, Gibber Gibber, My Old Mans A Mushroom |

It's not just huge. The world is so well designed that you never see the same scenery anywhere else.
