Truely cosmetic stuff can stay.

Bingo ^

The fact you can buy IN GAME gold with RL currency is attrocious. GG Anet, not pay to win my ass!

You can exchange Gems for in-game gold. You can buy gems straight from their pay system with your CC. In other words you can buy 1000 gems for $10 (example btw) and exchange 1000 gems for 7000 silver or something like that. Given the rates that other PayToWin games have used that amount of money will fluctuate into relevant in-game items. In other words a REALLY rare item that costs a buttload of cash will probably end up be worth $20 in terms of gems or something.

Still, heavy PayToWin guys.

Only thing good about buy to play will be watching all the WoW fanbois threaten to unsub if they do not add addons or x-server LFG. That shit will be pure entertainment.

20 bucks? Piffle.  In EVE it was one time estimated that a Titan was worth of $6K in real money if purchased via PLEX.

And didn't someone in Entropa Universe buy a piece of the game world for millions of dollars, now there's some real P2W for you.

I could buy 20 dollar rare items all day.

Well, i would feel real pity for  someone that spend 20$ in a item they can get by playing, and its even worse when that item doesnt give any advantage in PvP, real sad.

What i learned from this thread.

EVE is pay to win.

People will pay subscription for anything, i wonder why so many titles are going F2P then...

Don't forget, you can also buy GEMS with GOLD.

Also, the amount of gold received from gems is not really efficient.

You can go the whole game without EVER paying ACTUAL money for ANYTHING.

This game is not P2P, it is not P2W, it is also not F2P. It is B2P, and it's damn fuckin' good

(Sorry for the bad english it is not my native language)

Edit : WoW is P2P with a cash shop, don't forget that too.(Not an ingame-one, but there still is one)

You know I never thought about it before, but my friend has dropped $2k in EvE on plexes for isk. I guess it really is F2P :(!

Having just played beta weekend and seeing how this game lives up to its hype and delivers far more in terms of challenging and innovative PVE, balanced and skillbased PVP and a WvW system that is essentially DAOC reborn at last, I now have no idea how subcription based MMO can justify asking a monthly fee in the face of the GW2 onslaught.

Q: But GW1 was buy to play too and that didn't kill the subcription based mmo?

Yeah but GW1 wasn't really an MMO and wasn't a persistent world, it was small group play and not nearly as fun or immersive as GW2. It was in a category of its own.

Q: Theres been tons of free to play games and none of them put a dent in games with subscriptions like WoW.

Key difference here is that none of them were as good as WoW or Swtor or other major sub-games. Most free to play or buy to play mmo's have either been korean grindy games with pay to win business models, games developed by small amateur companies or subsciption games that where so subpar that the only way to keep some customers was to make it free. And the few games that are halfdecent give you very little options and lock away content and class choice behind a cashshop.

If however you wanted to enjoy the highest quality gameplay you have been forced to pay for a subscription based mmo has so far been the only way to go.

Until now.

Guild Wars 2 offers basically the best current gameplay in both PVE and PVP and won't ask subscription money for it. The AAA games so far have been able to ask subscription because only they delivered the high quality that is expected from a subcription based money. But after the release of GW2 how will other gamecompanies now justify asking you to pay 15 euro per month when Arenanet is offering something bigger and better for just the one time price of the box? GW2 would have been revolutionary and likely become market leader in a few years if it had been a subcriptionbased MMO, but because it isn't, it won't just dominate the market, it will change the pricing method of mmo's.

My predictions, with the current global economic downturn people aren't all to happy with having to spend money on a monthly fee. GW2 will already be causing a massive migration from the classic MMO's by offering a better game. The bussiness model however means that there will be pressure on the existing subscription based games to go free. Failing to do that will mean their populations will dwindle quickly as players ask themselves why they should pay for something other people get for free and better.

New games that get released and want to stand a chance against the GW2 onslaught will stand no chance with a subcription based model.

Omg, the fanboys are really blind talking about Gw2. No it wont kill the p2p market, is not a wow killer, or swtor killer or even a rift killer. There is nothing new or innovative in gw2, is a mix of rift and warhammer online, mostly warhammer online and it doesnt have enough content like a p2p MMO have, even worse a F2P game like wrath of heroes have more pvp battlefields and game modes than gw2. The only good thing about gw2 is the WvWvW, but is literally a copy and paste of warhammer RvR, ¨the doorhammer golden age¨. The game still have a lot of problems, really a lot, but fanboys cant see that. Im really believe now that TSW will be better and more complex than gw2, after what i saw in the last beta, maybe i gonna give it a try.

I'm pretty sure it is actually going to be a SWTOR killer. Along with TSW and TERA.

SWTOR is the greatest mmo ever!

I'm having a hard time seeing how GW2 in a couple years with 2-4 expansions and other premium content is going to look any different than LOTR's or DDO.  The only difference being that GW2 requires you to shell out cash up front for the original box (plus whatever all the expansions together cost at the time if you want to play current content) while LOTR's and DDO both let you play the game for some time before they want you to pay for the first expansion content.

I'm not passing judgement on the quality of any those games, I'm just saying business model wise GW2 is pretty close to Turbines F2P model with a pay up front twist.

Every game makes you buy it, even those with monthly fees, also from the experience with GW the expasion packs will only add new content without making you pay for it if you dont want to play it. I dont see your point.

I can play LOTR's and DDO for a long time (forever if I want to grind a lot) without shelling out cash and if the only thing I ever purchase on the RMT shop is exansion content others won't be at any more of a advantage to me.

My point is GW2 won't end subscription based MMO's anymore than those other F2P games did.  WOW, RIFT, SWTOR and others will still exist after GW2 just as well as before.  I know it hurts the fanboy ego to call GW2 a western F2P game but that really is what it is with the exception that you don't get to play it for free before you decide to shell out money.  That's not really what I would call progress.

$15 a month is nothing.

There are still a few titles being released later this year or next, that have many of the features of GW2 and will be sub based. Not that Im bashing GW2, I love the game and already bought it.

I have just enough time to play 2 MMOs if they make something really good, I dont mind paying the sub.

No way am I cancelling my subs.  I like what they deliver.  I'm curious if B2P will end up even being a success or if ANet will end up having to lower the price, get rid of it, or offer gems for the price.  No other F2P/cash shop game tries to bang you with an up front cost for nothing in return.  I think B2P will end up being a failure.

There is still room for both models but it seems many mmos have already made the jump from p2p to f2p.

You should check swtor.com forums or even the game chat. It will be hard to find positives comments about the gw2 beta, you will find a lot of ¨guild gates 2¨, or  ¨door wars¨, ¨is not a wow clone is a mythic clone¨ . believe me gw2 wont kill anything, and probably after a few more BW the QQing about the game will be even bigger.  People will play but they wont quit thier P2P MMO, and after the honey moon Month, people will get bored pretty fast without new content, and a B2P game like gw2, wont have updates and content updates like you can find in a p2p MMO.

Well in eve you need more than gold (isk)  you need skill training as well, which is time based and has a whole economy.   and just because you CAN buy a character with a titan for real money, doesnt mean you know how to fly one and doesnt mean your part of an alliance that can and will protect you.

but then again, people will buy gold no matter what in games, so I've nothing against a legit system of obtaining gold, but I agree... this sets a bit of a precedent.

Whatever, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.   I guess judging by all the fanboyism going on Anet know they can do whatever they like.

Either way, at this point in time, its not really about how the game plays, its more about how much your willing to pay for a game with a box price and a cash shop.
