Hi all,
Just as many others i also have been looking forward to try GW2 beta, now the beta is over and its time for my sceptical review.....here comes: Logging in 7/10 It all starts with logging into the game......as the beta started on friday (evening for me) that was not happening, so there was my first dissappointment. On saturday i tryd again and b4 i logged in it patched up and bingo....i was ready to go. During the rest of the weekend there always were SOME problems with logging in at times but i wont be too hard on anet for this because thats what the beta is for anyways, to test their server loads.
Character creation 7/10 Not as many options as one could hope for (if you are into that like i am). To me customizing my characters takes a while.....i want then to be like i want them to be, so for me there where just not enough options. For most people the customizing will be enough in this game so not realy game breaking that the options are not as much as i wished they would be. Still there where plenty of options but just not enough for ME.
Playability (for new players to the game) 8/10 If you are a GW1 player you'll get the hang of it right away, no matter what the fans keep saying.....to me plays like GW1 (i'll explain in a second). If you never played GW1 then its not realy that hard to get going BUT there should be some more tooltips imho for those who are very new to these kind of games. When i say it plays like GW1 i actually mean that (not that its all negative, just the same)...... - npc's in the middle of a forrest or a cave was also in GW1 (maybe less dynamic but still they where there in GW1) - the use of just 4 (+4) skills when you go into batle. - salvaging and crafting....the same also. - the use of companions that fight along your side, without the skills this time and only in your personal story to make it look more dynamic......for me it worked, it felt alot more dynamic then in GW1 (GJ)
Events 6/10 Dont believe the hype around these.......they will get old very fast just like they did in Rift or WAR. imho they are alot like WAR, they just around more.....but thats mho about it. Actually they are almost exactly the same exept these events themselfs are not static like in rift. Yeah yeah i know.....you get to choose what part of the event you are doing but does it realy matter? Either you kill mobs or gather something, or you play with snowballs?? because when the second stage of that event triggers you will be overrun in most events if you are alone.......but in beta you where never alone i hear.......yeah but after release you will be alone in that zone if you roll an alt just like in any other released game. If you push the hype in the corner.......the events are all fun if enough people are around. Didnt have the chance to try and do a whole event on my own to see if they scale enough to do them alone....if they do.....then these events will be alot of fun if possible single player tough. Overal i realy enjoyed these events...they ARE A LOT OF FUN but then again they are not as dynamic as some fans say they are.......to me none of them actually changed ANYTHING in the world enviroment.....prove me wrong.
Combat 9/10 I hear alot of beta testers saying that the melee classes are just not strong enough compared to the ranged ones. They are wrong, i played the guardian and the warrior.....on release i'll be a guardian. On very early lvls this guardian is crap (by that i mean i didnt know how to play a melee char in GW2). After a while you will learn how to use the switch weapons to access more skills in combat.....this aint your every day mmo-combat anymore Dorothy! To my the combat felt freaking AWESOME. The dodging, switching skills, buffing and debuffing (they are important in GW2....trust me), positioning in the combat field. You have soo many thing to do while in combat with your melee character. The mobs AI seemd very good, also the same as in GW1 but thats what i liked about it......when another mob wanders close enough when you are in combat it WILL attack you......so you actually have to be carefull for adds no matter where you are fighting. Didnt even get to try a caster....the weekend was too short for that :p hehe
GFX 10/10 I have never seen a world created with so much care then this game.......everything looked realy freaking awesome....period!!!
Crafting 8.5/10 Again, the weekend was a bit short to get into it in depth but it felt good and some items looked actually usefull too for a change. The salvaging they took from GW1 is a good thing omho.....i like to have to work for my mats as a crafter. I can only hope that crafters can still be usefull at higher lvls tough...we will wait and see.
Community 9/10 Often overlooked in a game, but very important to my as an old school roleplayer. The people where mostly friendly (i didnt expects that tbh....hehe) and very helpfull. When people get downed in battle alot of people actually try to rez even in combat, anet really shines with bringing the community close to each other. Overal i hope the community will be as awesome as they where in beta.
The ingame shop (beta) 8/10 The shop seemd to hold no realy gamebreaking things in there.....GOD i hope they keep it that way at launch. For those who might have seen it ingame......some of the special boxes that drop that need a special key you can buy in the shop......i can confirm that these ALSO drop in the world loot (only had one key dropped in my 23 hours of playing but it drops) If they dont change their shop after launch then i am a happy puppy.
The "bad" stuff in this game (imho) - the dynamic events are not as dynamic as thay sayd it would be, i never had an event that actually changed anything in the world......no outposts where taken over like it happens in rift. - Some event are repeating way to fast.....to give an example: i was crafting in this outpost somewhere for about 15 to 20 minutes or so and this (SAME) event triggered in this outpost about 4 times i think......it actually got so annoying that i moved to another location. - Dont know if it was a bug or something (reported it anyways) but some of the lizzards in norn zone just kept disapearing on me and then popping out of nowhere again....very annoying (but maybe just a bug) - whats up with that damn beeping sound in the chat every time someone types something (i found no way to get rid of it, this was a BIG FAIL imho) (at first you think its some birds or somthing but it realy isnt......GRRRRR. - where was my pigion delivering my mail???? (or was that just a rumor.....i want my pigion damnit)
The good stuff in this game (imho) - The mobs AI is realy good - the events "FEEL" realy dynamic when you are in them (altough they are not imho) - good community (plz keep it this way guys :p ) - COMBAT.....omg freaking awesome :p - you will DIE......ALOT. (to die alot means that more challenge to stay alive for me......i love a challenge :) ) - underwater combat......anet has done a perfect job with this imho. - The graphics......imo, the best EVER !!!!! not only does it look good, it also feels very alive. - Zoning times are very vast, so getting drinks when changing a zone :p - dying armor armor to look kinda unique.......AWESOME (how that simple feature realy made me like this game even more)
MY conclusion of this beta: After playing guarian, warrior, thief and a bit with the necro it all felt pretty balanced to me (PVE wise) but you might need to work on getting to know your skill swapping because there is the key to playing your character the way its meant to be played imo. I realy can ot comment on the PVP yet because i didnt try it yet. Even tough i am a sceptic, this game is overall a VERY solid game. The overall game seems very polished, here and there are some anoying bugs as stated higher in this post but honest is honest.....its just beta, we will give anet the chance to get rid of those and this game can't really go wrong imo. Alltough i had (have) a pretty sceptical look on these overhyped games i must admit that if you are an mmo fan, you will buy this for sure.......people have waisted money on games ALOT worse then this one. My recomendation is.........just buy it, you'll have a blast.
My 2 coppers on giving a personal review about this game to the mmorpg.com community.

Just want to add three things: The lizards (if we're talking about the same ones) have a skill called Shadowstep, it's like the Thief's shadowstep where they will dissapear and appear next to you. The Pigeon delivering mail was there for me all the time, maybe a glitch? Absolutely agree that the events need to be on a slower timer, they were way to fast. Other then that great review, great to hear you liked it :) |

Originally posted by oubers Curious on what level You got to. I was doing the 15-25 level Norn zone on my character and 3 outposts were constantly overrun by mobs due to lack of players around at that time. Also in Charr 15-25 zone, the last outpost in far north-east corner that has a portal to underwater temple with a lvl 30 boss was constantly retaken by Flame Legion. The in human zone, when the huge Centaur assaul;t event was going on, several outposts were attacked all the time, and only because the zone was filled with players at that time, we managed to hold them.
As for the Skelks (the lizzards) they shadowstep/vanish every now and then. It's not a bug, it's their intended mechanic. The pigeon is there, but it's very quick animation, the big envelop most of the time hides it tho. |

Shadowstepping lizzards are just annoying then :p hehe i never seen the pigeon because of the envelope as you say.......maybe i can disable that envelope in the future.....i still want my pigeon :p hehe

So actually you would describe the DE's as being worse than Rift's? And not soloable? Brr, the events were the main reason i've been looking into this game, the rest (all the top level gear with the same stats, pvp with no useful physical - well, pixelated - rewards) are a total turn-off for me. Anyone else able to confirm this about the DE's?

Originally posted by simmihi NO m8 they are not worse....that's not what i sayd here......they realy do FEEL dynamic but its in stages just like RIFT. As for not soloable.....i didnt get the chance to try to solo one due to the many people that where in the beta. i just think that in some stages you might get overwhelmed by too many mobs thats all......but like i sayd....didnt get the chance to even try and solo one tough.

Originally posted by Ezhae Yeah the second zone up outpost get fought over alot. I guess they didnt want to many places getting taken over in lower lvl area or there was just alot of players there and was easy to stop it. |

Originally posted by Ezhae Indeed. While many events have little impact on the world there are some that have a bit more. From the pipes in Queensdale getting poisoned and oozes being spawned in certain areas to outposts being taken by centaurs. There are areas where mini wars are being fought as it were. The problem is there were already places where there weren't enough people to retake those and I am slightly concerned that things like that will only be worse 4-6 months post launch. I am hoping that there will be some way to combat that for ArenaNet. Overall, I was very happy with the game experience this weekend. but some of the events are definitely impossible with less players and that could be a problem. Also, OP. I peronally feel like there are some melee classes that are better than others. I didn't spend a lot of time on warrior, but Guardian was a lot easier to play that a melee thief for me. |

Originally posted by simmihi I dont think he taking into account that the event scale up depending on the amount of players, so they all would seem hard right now since there was atleast 5 people at every event due to flooding of the zone. So they would be scaled down to solo players so they should be easier. Dynamic event imo are alot better than rifts ones, i got 2 characters to lvl 20 before beta ended was alot of fun. |

From my experience , if you just tried several profesions and havent got to 'higher' levels (15+) you might be under impression that 'hearts' are DE, but they are not. Even on first human map there was ongoing bigger event with Seraph fighting centaurs and you had permanet info how it goes - on my server players were controling several centaur outposts and centaurs were assaulting them to get them back.

Originally posted by oubers Wierd. For the most part I would agree w/ your assessment. Great review! However: When it comes to dynamic events, some of the criticism always puzzles me. I'm not sure what exactly people need in order to consider something 'world changing' but there were quite a few events that took over outposts if you didn't complete them on a somewhat regular basis. For example, in the norn lands, (first zone, lvl ~10-12 mobs), there was an outpost south of Svanir Dome that was ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS under attack by vikings & frozen elementals. Quite a few times I would run by there and the entire outpost would be whiped out, the waypoint disabled, and I'd have to take it back. I've found a few of these in each of the starter zones, tbh. However, if you have a bunch of people completing the events, you won't generally see them fail like that. Other than that, though, it's mostly outpost / camp trading, and NPC / trading. I haven't seen anything that changes the physical landscape in any significant way, yet. Though there is an event where you fall down a hole and have to escort a little girl out of there / close the hole. - On a side note, I'd definitely agree on the events resetting too fast sometimes. Definitely something Anet could work on before release. |

I think most people move a long too fast to see the outcomes of events. There is a lot of care and details put into the out come of events i think a lot of people miss. The NPCs normally have a small skit reaction to the event sometimes smaller missions spawn. I think a lot of people miss these because they just move a long once their screen tells them to.

I agree with most of what you said except a few things.. also this is now from this weekends beta alone as i was in closed beta as well..
Combat - Works well but at the end of the day feels and plays like your average tab based combat system, nothing really new here I would have given it a 7/10 as it works well but very similar to everything else not what i was expecting from the hype.
Graphics - Again techically nothing special here average looking game but with nice world design. I would also give this 7/10 as it could have been a lot better..
I think over all i would give this game 7.5/10, its a fun game to play and if you can resist the cash shop its b2p and thats a good thing.. Sadly it does not bring too much extra to the MMORPG world and certainly does not live up to the super hype well at least for me.. I might pick it up in the futrue but not at the silly price they are currently asking.. |

Originally posted by aesperus i have been there....but there where always people fighting them. When you passed by this lodge that was over taken by these elemental......did you actually have to kill them or did it just reset after a while.....thats what i realy would like to test......because in rift the outposts just reset after a while, is it the same in GW2?

Just to fix your post Yes you can solo DEs, they scale very well I created new char on sunday when the starter zones werent cramped up and I managed to do a lot of events alone, but you have to be near the appropriate level Yes some events are very hard (god Im happy for this, I was afraid that failing an event would be nearly impossible, Anet nicely surprised me with the difficulty of the game, I hope they wont change it because of the whiners) and some are (nearly) impossible to solo (especially elite events) The reseting of events seems to be very fast especially in the starter area I agree with you |
