What everyone who isn't playing is really asking: "Is it possible to level without being forced to do linear quests, or events, and just 'grind' on mobs with friends if they so choose to?"
Example: A group of RL friends get together to attack an NPC dungeon/keep/castle in the middle of [somewhere]. This group of friends can then attack, without a quest or "event" to give them exp, and massacre said place filled with NPCs in order to level should they so choose to?
Or, are the only REAL ways of earning experience quests & static world events? Also as an example, if 1 monster gives 5 exp, and it takes you 5minutes to kill 10 monsters than == 50exp in 5minutes. If a world event or quest gives 500exp in 5minutes that means that killing monsters your level in order to get experience is NOT a viable option, and means the game forces you into questing & world events (WoW-Design experience gain btw).
Anyone have an answer :3? The Theory of Conservative Conservation of Ignorant Stupidity: |

You can if you chose to, but it's not going to be efficient.

As somebody else pointed out in another thread, the best EXP rate comes from Heart grind. next is Events
and last WvW. WvW in its current form is not viable form of leveling that was promised.

Just to know, why would you grind exp?

Originally posted by Banisco I can answer this. its simple really.
Higher the Level you are, the more Skills you unlock.
the more skills you unlock, the more interesting and powerful a Build you can make.
in GW2, each Utility slot is locked by level requirement. Including Elites. Elites are unlocked at level 30. So most of your time early on will be spent spaming weapon skills over and over. Utilties have long cooldowns but are useful.
Also Traits unlock by level. a Higher level player is open to way more fun customization than a lower level character.
also another thing. Like in World of Warcraft how you use to gain Talent points each level, in GW2 you earn skill points each level.
Skill Points are used to buy skills that you can use. Problem is, some skills cost more than others. Which mean you will be grinding levels just to unlock them. Weapon skills unlock simply by defeating stuff with that weapon. But other skills unlock with the skill point system.
Did I make this clear enough for you?

Also about the skill learning cost, as far as i know the skill points are obtained via "quests" or chalenges that are all over the map so your level doesnt really matter (only for unloking the slots) |

Unless your sole purpose is to hit level 80 and do nothing but WvW, there is no reason to Powerlevel. ( Grinding isn't a negative word to me) Every zone in the game has a level cap, being to high will reduce you to it. |

A few things.
Skill points are earned at 1 per level once you unlock the skill slot (of which there are 3). The skill point quests give you an extra point. So if you have studied up and know what skills you want to use, then you'll easily get the three you want long before level cap. Almost all the skills are fairly long cooldown skills. Roughly 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes. They seem really underpowered at the moment. Builds are really limited to your two weapon sets. Then you get healing slot (of which there are three choices), Skill slots (3) and your elite skill (1). Healing, skill and elite skill do not swap out when you switch weapons. So those stay static unless you visit your trainer to respec. Depending on what class you played during the beta, you will have had a wildly different experience. Ranged classes have it mind boggilingly easy. I don't think I've even been downed once on my ele. And the ele has such a huge variety of spells available. 4 schools of magic that ALL change with weapon and you always have access to all 4 schools. Really awesome for those who like variety and flexibility. Thieves on the other hand feel really limited. Daggers v sword +dagger has only 3 different abilities, but they're basically the same. 1 is always your auto-attack, 2 is your leap/shadowstep attack, 3 is your dual combo spin move. Playstyle is nearly identical between the two weapon sets. Then you have the option to use ranged, which sadly is a necessity for elite mobs with lots of aoe as you just can't take damage in this game. You can only dodge twice before needing more energy and once you've done that, insta-dead even if you're trying to get away. And for a completely different melee experience, play a greatsword warrior and you will demolish things like butter. Not only that, but greatsword does aoe and you can take out groups of mobs with barely any effort. And you can take more damage. |

Originally posted by MMOExposed Your playing GW2 like a standard mmorg, sure you could rush to 80 to get your skills a little bit early, but you are using the old mentality that getting everything asap has to be best. You can focus on getting the optimal xp route to get all your skills asap, but the cost is that your focus is on xp rather than adventuring in the world as it was designed (it is kinda the whole point of GW2) On the other hand you can relax and enjoy playing day to day and seeing where the game will take you and enjoying a constant drip of rewards as you evolve in the game. In saying that It is horses for courses so there is nothing stopping you rushing if you want to, but why rush a fine meal :) eating a tasty meal in minute or eating a tasty meal in 30 minutes - the latter seems obvious if you are in no rush to leave the restuarant.
rpg/mmorg history: Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (9500 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (480 Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(350 elementalist) Now playing GW2/Diablo 3/Rift Waiting Archeage. |

Play PvE as u do in Skyrim, and try builds in 8v8 arenas. That's what I do atm and it works pretty cool. If you really just want to exp then rush from hearth to heart, but I doesn't suggest it, because exploring is really cool. Fastest low lvl xp farm is exploring till lvl 10 (Don't knwo if it works on higher lvls too.). A point of interrest gives at least 100xp, a teleport point is around 200xp. A full run in Lion's Arch (10+ TP points and 15+ point of interrests) is a LOT XP. Exploring your home cities also lots of xp.

For me, I played a few hours as an Engineer. I found that a lot of experienced can be gained from just exploring and finding new areas. When you find new areas, you find new heart quests, they don't feel like grind. For example at one point I had to have a snowball fight with some kids. I got a lot of xp from that. Shortly after the snowball fight, a dynamic quest started, it two phases later with slaying a huge deer in the woods. It took about 10 or 12 people to take the deer down. Again, I earned a lot of xp from those dymanic events. You also gain a lot of experience from just doing your own storyline. So basically, you get experience for everything. The only place you don't earn a lot of xp is wvwvw. The only way to earn xp from that is to succeed in the different dynamic events that go on. For instance, if red team is assaulting green team's keep, defending it will result in ___xp ___karama ___gold |

But the question still remains...WHO ON EARTH WOULD WANT TO GRIND!!?! Edit: but yes you can grind if you want. However let me give you this small equation: 1hr of grind + you = about 1bar of exp(the bars are pretty big >.<) Exploring and finding 2 or 3 waypoints in 5-10 mins = 3 times as much experience. I explored from divinitys reach down to kessex hills and some other places and went up 3 levels just from waypoints and points of interest...i found all the stuff in the city >.< 100% complete there!
