First off many people know be to be a huge mega fan of GW2 and I have gushed over the game constantly during my time here on MMORPG.com, but only because I have grown sick and tired of the traditional WoW/EQ model of MMO gameplay.  I was one of the select few "MMO Old Timers" who got their start in MMOs with Asherons Call and as such I have always wished MMO companies would have a more AC style direction but the majority of companies go for that WoW/EQ model which IMO does not parlay well to a long term social interaction but instead focuses on the levelup process.  With that being said this review looks upon GW2 with rose tinted AC goggles but not without some things I disagree with and wish were different....in other words *gasp* I actually have some issues with the game.  This review is based on PvE world only as I intend to leave WvW for future betas (or release).

WHAT I LIKE SO FAR

  • The login, simply brilliant and simple.  It even has a password save feature so I can get to the action even faster.
  • the initial prologue is well done and gets you into the action quickly and makes the game feel alive and fluid.
  • Combat Animations are superb and on par with WoW, IMO it might even be slightly better which is hard to do.
  • Running and character animations are fluid, natural and flow well...This was a worry for me because alot of videos made the character run animations feel disconnected from the ground they ran on (LotRO style).
  • The WORLD, the Ambiance, the entire zones are amazing and probably one of the games strong suits.
  • The SOUNDS.  Seriously I never care about sounds in a game I usually turn them off completely and listen to music or vent (haha looking at you SWTOR).  However the Music is epic, it makes me feel like I am smack dab in the middle of a epic movie like Lord of The Rings.  The Sounds are awesome, the background talking makes the world feel alive.
  • The Dynamic Events give more credence to the world feeling alive and yes even though alot of it is actually kill 10 rats, its kill 10 rats on steroids with panache and gusto.  In other words it hides it well.
  • Love the Human and Norn Areas, races, storylines.  Just epic.
  • The UI.  I love how simple and elegant it is.
  • The exploration is second to none. its the strongest suit to GW2 and will keep me playing for a long time.
  • HAVING the ability to use a first and last name.  F U BLIZZARD!!!!!!

THINGS I DO NOT LIKE

  • The classes.  I will always be a cynic of class based systems but at least during the early levels of the game it feels like Melee classes get the shaft, in so far as that every class I played I put away the melee and went with the bow or gun(s).  Even with Dodge the melee felt squishy and you really had to be on your toes.
  • The Down State.  I feel it takes away from the overall feel of the combat and I feel the game would be better off with a more traditional death feature but with harsher death penalties.
  • The heart quests.  I understand why they were implemented (Devs stated they were added to give some guideance for the lost and cofused aka WoW kiddies)  It adds a minor notion of hand holding and on-rails feeling both of which I loathe greatly.
  • NOT BEING ABLE TO USE MODIFIER KEYS.  My biggest complaint so far, I pretty much hate not having the freedom to do what I want to do.  Its a shame because the UI is so awesome but not being able to expand upon that awesomeness is bad.
  • The Professions as a whole (different from above).  I do not like to be hand held nor do I like to be denied freedom.  I personally dont like how weapons have their own skills and are tied to specific keybinds....an example is the Warrior Rifle Skill, the optimom initial rotation is Brutal Shot (bound to 4), Aimed Shot (bound to 2) and finally Volley (bound to 3)  It detracts from my personal enjoyment having to hit 4,2,3.  Onb a side note I will get used to it, but this isnt how I would of designed a game.  I feel GW2 would of been better off with a 8 to 12 hot bar limited ability based system similar to GW1 but thats just me.
  • Having to stock up on consumables to harvest?  Serious just get rid of that and have an item (multi-upgradeable even) that we can use to harvest and collect, it makes no sense to have to keep a stock of mining picks or axes on your person.  I do however love that they have their own slot on the hero panel (character pane).

All in all I have had a very positive experience and I doubt anyone will ever have the chance to play their ultimate MMO without having to design and develop it themselves (ohh how I wish I was a multi-millionaire).  I come away with a  sense of fun and gratitude with the game and greatly look forward to its release.  I feel GW2 has alot to give me a millions of players like me (jaded WoW/Themepark players) a long term MMO to call home and I can honestly see myself playing for many years.  In fact it is one of the few MMO's ive played where Ive drawn more parrallels with my first MMO love (AC).  I even liken the way that exploration is paramount in game design harkens back to what made AC enjoyable to ME.

Thank you for the review. While I don't share your feeligns about a lot of the handholding (it could be FAR worse), I agree with a few points. Glad to see someone else that could be objective and show both the good and the bad.

Melee squishiness is a big concern, but I'm finding as I get the hang of managing my abilities I'm not only viable in combat, but pretty strong. It requires swapping between sets, and knowing when to use all your controls/debuffs. And it's tough. But it's rewarding as hell when you get it right.

I have to disagree with the movement animations, I don't feel any weight in them and very slidey. Combat animation however are great.

Game is very good though. I wasn't impressed at first but kept playing and really got into it. I do hope they add modifier keys as well and I also hope they add the new keybind below the ability. I.e. default they are 1,2,3,4, etc and the number shows at the bottom of the icons however when you rebind them it doesn't show your new bind.

i partly agree with the melee combat, but then "we" are so used to being able to fight 2, 3, 4 plus even con or mobs a even level or so higher than your toon in most MMO's that GW2 makes you feel way more squishy as you simply cannot do this anymore.

while i feel they might need to do some more tweaking here i an generally quite happy with it and once you get the skill to switch between weapon sets it does add to the combat and make it a lot more interesting but again it does take some getting used to, when to dodge, heal, go ranged, jump back into melee range etc.

You can rebind your keys, fyi. It's in the options.

Thank you for posting one of the most balanced reviewettes so far.  Hopefully you will start a trend where people can be honest about the good of the game as well as providing insight into what may NOT be so good.

Just a quick FYI, although I understand your stance on the hand holding Hearts DEs, there are actually events that happen that are not marked on the map. In a sense they do try to reward those folks that like to explore with these hidden events.

I will add....

half the fun for ME was in exploring and just randomly running into events and quests.  I didn't talk to any scouts so didn't have those things marked on my map.  I just took off roaming about and found myself in all kinds of trouble, so to speak.  It was a BLAST.   That is probably one of my favorite things in the game....it encourages exploration.

This is true, I came across one just wandering in the swamp and needless to say it was pretty epic.

Yea people already gave somethings to note, I still like how you balanced it bro.

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)

Thanks for the nice write up. Absolutely loving about all of the positives. I find animations and movement very important in mmorpgs (games in general), and the feeling of the world in mmorpgs especially, where almost every mmorpg fails. GW2 seems not to be joking around here :)

@the quote. I'm not sure if I understand or refuse to believe. Do you mean I cannot use shift+ a key to use another ability compared to the key alone without the shift key? Meaning, I have to use single keys only? This is really bad in my books, I dont remember when I played any mmorpg without modifiers like shift, ctrl and alt for a bunch of functions.

The second part is even worse. You cannot possibly be saying that the abilities are bound to say 1-5 and I cannot change them to for example e, r, t, f and g. Or any other combination of letters? It's been over 5 years since I used numbers to activate abilites. Surely I can change the bindings through somekind of keybinds menu? I hope I misunderstood something, this game looks so awesome but I almost crapped my pants reading this, it just cant be true, I'm just being dumb now, tell me I'm being dumb and misunderstood perfectly well written english right? :O

Yea currently you cant use shift/ctrl/alt modifers for any keys....MK said on Guru2.com that it is soemthign they want to change so I am holding out hope it does.  Its imperative that they allow it.

As for your 2nd question yes you can bind them to alternate keys like r t c z v or what have you but I personally prefer to use 1-5 and then shift 1-5 and ctrl 1-5, its all personal preference.  What I was alluding to in my 2nd part was that I dont like how the abilities themselves can not me be moved I would prefer it more if I could move those as well (but that will never happen)  In my example I have to use 4, 2, 3 for rifle skills where id be much more comfortable to switch those skills on the bar to 2,3,4.  Still that portion is not really that important but I felt I had to give me personal prefernece talking about it.

Well, I'd like the modifiers but I can live without them also. I was more worried about the second part and thank god I was just misunderstanding. I agree it would be good to be able move the icons to which ever slots as I always do, even with letters I keep them in order from left to right e+r+t+f+g and I always like to keep less used abilities furthest from wasd and most used closer, but if not, that's also something I can live without, as long as I just get to set my keybindings.

Lets just hope they add that tiny bit of more customization to let us swap the slots in launch :)
