Things GW2 does legitimately better than others:

  • Dodging is an evolution to MMO combat. The animation is smooth, and the double-tap just feels "right".
  • The event system is better than Rift's or Warhammer's. The dynamic scaling means it's fun regardless of how many people are there. Eventually when the zones empty out, you'll still be able to hit all or most of the content. The story's behind the events are also interesting and easy to follow. It feels like you're making an impact and nave a purpose, something I found missing in Rift.
  • The Mists and Structured PvP are brilliant. Having a max level, fully-geared and traited character at your disposal at level 1 is quite fun. You also get unlimited free access to max level armor, weapons, sigils, traits and everything else to play around with.
  • The city of Lion's Arch is the best MMO city I've been in to date. It's breathtaking how large and alive the city feels.
  • Exp and loot gets shared on every mob regardless of whether you're in a formal group. This allows for organic groups to form where two players simply start playing co-operatively. There isn't much in the way of verbal communication, but you communicate through playstyle.
  • There is no subscription fee. Nothing I saw in the cash shop said "pay to win". In 8 levels, I had two locked chests drop. One I vendored, and the other I opened because I had free gems this weekend. What was in there? A potion that turned me into an "ooze" creature for 10 minutes. It was funny, but not at all useful. The other was a potion for exp boost if I could kill streak mobs in under 30 seconds. Since mob's don't give much exp anyway this was again only slightly more game breaking than the ooze spell.
  • It's no WoW clone no matter which way you slice it.

I find this game to be a lot of fun, much more so than in Rift, Warhammer and the SWTOR beta. It does a lot of things right, and isn't just paying lip service with its claims of making a different kind of MMO.

I do feel that the lag and general performance was unacceptable considering ANet charged players to play. Unfinished content, or restricted levels is one thing, but people crashing at the patcher is another. I am disappointed at this.

Once the game does launch though, it will definitely be my game of choice.

¨The animation is smooth¨, i stopped reading there. And OP, is still ur point of view. For me the pve and the structured pvp was really bored compared with my experience on swtor.  The best thing about gw2 is the WvW, but thats all, you´ll find a lot of people like me playing the game just for that. But the Best since 2004?, just NO, seriously thats a fanboy point of view.

I made the other in the General boards because I forgot about this new section. It was buried in like 5 minutes so I just forgot about it, and put the new one in here. Then a mod must have found it and plopped it in here. I've asked them to remove this.

I've only had the chance to play for a couple hours. I'll get more time in tonight. So far, it feels like a very well made action game.

Do you think that will have an impact on typical MMO cordination outside of voice chat?

I think the combat is deceptively deep which is a good sign. The feel/animations remind me of a console button masher which is unfortunate because the reality is there is a lot of depth. But the execution feels like I'm playing Disney's Toontown. Still, if you can get into it, it probably will be the flagship MMO esport.

From the live feeds I've seen I see a lot of people playing around other people but not really with other people.  When you play again could you feedback here how grouping and playing with others felt?  Can someone go about solo and then join a group dynamically?  Do people form goals or objectives on the fly?  Do people mostly just go around killing mobs until they get the dynamic event message?

I want an mmorpg where pvp matters, my enemies are not my race or class, and community matters.

I would add in the exploration, with all those little stuff that might not mean much by their own, but accumulated make exploration very nice, the world really feel more alive than in all the computer rpg i played.

I have great fun playing the game since they fixed their login server, euro server are like totally overloaded though, the experience is a lot better in the us servers (i transferred there because of a bugged portal and it was really a lot better, i'm going back in a us if i can). I like the game very much, and its working very smoothly even though i have only a duo core (high end though) with a 560 gtx, even in WvW. The game is really nice, and i'm in love with my character (female human :p). Thief gameplay is really nice, especially like the weapon swapping. I'm even more pumped now that before. I need a new mouse with crap load of thumb buttons lol.

Ye best game since a very very long time for me.

PS grouping in this game, man i wish grouping was always that fun in any mmo i played. Sorry i had to edit only for that comment, grouping without all those hardcoded mechanism is really nice.

I'm very social in mmos. I'm always running around, commenting on the weather, doing various /e, lots of small talk in character etc. That said, lot of folks seem to be more into the scenery than the people atm. You can't blame em. The ambiance is really nice and it definitely has that new shiny mmo smell. I haven't had any real player interaction though besides my attempts at starting up some rp during events. This is a fast paced game, which makes it a little tough to do so. Most people wandering around are not looking for conversation and if/when I did chat up some people, it wasn't more than about 10 seconds before the screens pops up with a new event and we're off doing our rotations.
So far, this is proving to be a very deep, fast paced, beat em up with some fun mechanics to enjoy the combat in. That said, there is nothing subtle about this game. Its all over the top and in your face. Even the ambiance is like AMBIANCE!!! if that makes any sense lol.

I agree with this. The only thing I would add is that I've literally wandered way off the beaten path with a couple of random PuG event players, and it was really fun.

It's like at first you're with a zerg, tons of people everywhere, chaos, and eventually you complete the objective. Then some people disappear to cash in the rewards, but a large group continues on. Eventually you complete some smaller stuff, more people fade away, and eventually you're left with just a core group of two or three players all still from that original zerg.

It's that small leftover group where the game really shines. You're not part of a formal group, but here you are playing together, helping each other, taking out veteran mobs, and just kind of pushing forward until you hit content that's too tough to handle.
