lol @mikelambert. So, I have to go to "ihatemmorpgs" to see that the game is not for me? I played the game, and I enjoyed myself, and I know of alot of other people that enjoy it too. If what I enjoy is "bad", well then I guess I just have bad taste..., but guess what? I ENJOY it, and in the end, that is what really matters to me as the consumer.

As for unbiased and accurate, it is far from that. It's biased and opinionated. Don't believe me? Check out what they like :-P

For me, Tera is genuine fun -- the same sense of fun I had when I first started playing MMO's back in '97.

Same story with my wife and I. We were very pleasantly surprised. Just not '97. We played our first MMO in '05, but the same sentiment applies!

I wanted to like this game a lot, but if I'm going to spend a majority of my time questing, and those quests are painful to do and read, then I'm not going to have fun. I was hoping the combat might liven things up, but I'm not willing to purchase the game and play until level 20 to find out.

Might i ask how many hours you put into the game?  I have watched friends go from 1-23 playing after he got off work on a weekend (works mornings and free after).  The quest tracker and map are very well done to the point where you don't need to read a line of text to know where to go and what to kill.

There hasn't been a major MMO release with open pvp in quite a while. There also hasn't been a major MMO released with a political system for years I think.  There isn't a full action MMO in an open world to date.  I'd not call TERA a typical MMO because it has kill x and collect x quests.  This game has more to offer that is different than recent titles such as SWTOR and maybe other future titles people are waiting on.

Might I ask how many MMO's you have actually played? Due to your above response, it would seem that you are less than knowledgable about a lot of recent MMO's.

"There hasn't been a major MMO release with open pvp in quite a while."  Really? What about Darkfall, Mortal Online, Perpetuum Online... Do any of these games ring a bell?

"There also hasn't been a major MMO released with a political system for years I think."   I'm not sure what rock you have been living under, but there are many many games that have them either as working systems like EVE, Wakfu, Perpetuum and A tale in the desert but there are also many games where politics just plays itself out, even though it isnt part of normal gameplay. Ever been on a server in WoW where the guild who had the Scepter to unlock Ahn-Qiraj but refused to do it until other guilds ponied up some dough? Thats called a filibuster A.K.A. politics.

"There isn't a full action MMO in an open world to date."  This statement is just absurd. I dont even know where to begin with this one, other than to point you to the game list, on this very site you posted this. Earthrise, Darkfall, Mortal Online ... all action MMO's that are not static target and press X hotkey.

"This game has more to offer that is different than recent titles such as SWTOR and maybe other future titles people are waiting on."  Really? Can you name something? Based on the fact that your previous statements have been shown to be false. Care to post something that TERA does that is original?

TERA is an empty shell of a game. It really doesnt have much to offer. The crafting system completely blows and the enchanting system is straight out of Silk Road, which is like 13 years old. Other than that there is combat, which is fun I will admit, but every other game on the market also offers combat. The politics system seems unique I guess, but it certainly is not the first time it has been done. Outside of that very very short list of features... what is there?

I like the premise behind the structure of this style of review, will be interesting to see how it develops.

Darkfall July 2009, Mortal Online June 2010, Perpetuum November 2010. All of these games are going on 2-3 years old and my definition of recent would be within the pass 12 months.

Again I said released recently. EVE, Perpetuum and A Tale in the Desert are all old. Wakfu is but lacks so much popularity that I honestly forgot about it.

Your mentioned games are not "true" action games.  They are as much action combat games as GW2 is.  They use different combat systems from the standard tab target system but lack things like animation lock forcing a player to decide when to attack and when to evade.

"This game has more to offer that is different than recent titles such as SWTOR and maybe other future titles people are waiting on."  Really? Can you name something? Name any game that has  done anything new?  Every new MMO will be repainted features of MMO's before them.  Different combinations of features  will be all that sets them apart. GW2 isn't unique, DEs are rifts and rifts are PQs and PQs are group quests and group quests  are quests  that require  more than one player(features evolve, calling them 'new' isn't completely true).  SWTOR VO  isn't unique, MMO's have been using VO long before simply not on the scale that SWTOR did.  You will be hard ressed to come up with something completely different in this industy.  TERA combination of features they have made their own is what makes TERA unique and giving more to offer than SWTOR which was WoW with less interesting dungeons and quests with a lot of VO.  Most of the games you've mentioned have failed to  become popular because their features didn't work or lacked.  TERA is a solid game.

TERA is an empty shell of a game. It really doesnt have much to offer. The crafting system completely blows and the enchanting system is straight out of Silk Road, which is like 13 years old. I take it you don't like the game by your statement calling it an empty shell. FFXIV was an empty shell and a very good looking shell at that. TERA  is one of the few games that only gets better as you progress to endgame which is the opposite of most MMO's where you hit the cap and come to the conclusion the journey was great but the end sucks.

Fine you don't lke TERA but it is far from an empty shell.

I found the game very fun to play, but this quote is scary:

"I still expect TERA to be a quick jaunt to the max of 60, and while that may be worrisome for some"

There is, at present, not much to do at end game, hence if they let people level too fast the game will be ghost town soon as the next game comes out.  What is it with current players, they don't like challenges?  Give me a long leveling curve any day in the week.  I can play an fps any day if I want to just play an end game game.

I wish those who intend to play fun, but I just don't see any staying power in this game,

To the avid proponents, you have to remember this game bombed in Korea.  Many of the players got bored and left within 3 months.  Now I know that Enmasse has made many improvements since then.  We will just have to wait and see.

Another problem I have so far with the game deals with the look of male and female characters alike.  Both are ridiculously clothed.  Like nearly naked.  The Aman, Popori, and even the newly dressed Elin are fine.  It’s the damned Castanics that are all either bare-chested or bare-cheeked.  It’s just… disturbing.  I know it’s the Korean aesthetic, but still.  I’ll take my weird dragon-like Aman or the adorable Popori any day.

Thinking about some polls I've seen, showing Castanic to be the most popular race, I'm not sure it's just a Korean aesthetic.. that aside though, what really bothers me is how each race has a distinctive armor style, and we get locked into it at character creation.  The item remodeller doesn't help that much, when all the armor is pretty similar, within each race.  So similar, that by the mid-20s, I still felt like I had no appearance options at all.

Speaking of which, what's with the dye not only being so expensive, but only lasting a single day?  Why do devs go to the trouble of putting it in the game, but in such a way that it's like a luxury that most players won't even bother with?

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

I like this article, I feel the same way. When I start playing I can't stop. Too bad Guild Wars 2 didn't live up to its hype, well at least for me it didn't.

The endgame seems to be a ton of challenge, there's really going to be tons of work put into crafting and gathering mats. Also the open world pvp (on the pvp servers at least) should keep people busy, with the GvG.

Last but not least: don't forget the dungeons on Hard Mode being really hard if they live up to their promise. No fight is the same with dodges and what not.

I played in the first open beta a few months back after the pre-orders started but decided not to go to any of the closed betas or final open beta (even though I pre-ordered) because I felt in the past it took away from the whole launch day experience.

So I've had a ball tonight and found the game to be really fun and can see significant improvement from when I tried it a few months ago, if the endgames good I can see me playing this for quite some time, the combat is different and the graphics are ace (and colourful!) a real change from westerns mmos.

Other notable changes since I last played are the high res textures and the LFG tool which are both welcomed in my opinion.

I'm prepared to give TERA a chance even though it wasnt recieved well in Korea, I'm sure they have improved it a lot since the Korean launch.

Yes I have mental issues. And yes I take meds for it.

Its not the greatest. It it ain't bad either. While it may have been out in Korea for a while now its new here and still in its early stages. Companies have been known to add new features and items to the stateside release and even impliment them to the original versions as well. I' e been enjoying the beta. Early leveling is quick but I see the first 20 levels as story progression, getting to know your class and familiarizing youself with the game in general. Then the good stuff starts. For now I'm enjoying the heck out of it. This game DOES have potential but its all up to Bluehole and En Masse to take it to that level and not kill the game with CS and F2P.

New build in progress.
Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not worth a sub fee. There is F2P MMO's, and Single Players RPG's that offer more content then this game does. Whoever decided that it would be ok to have 3 equipment slots for the visual look and customization for players in a P2P MMO must of been up in the happy smoke. That is a poor design decision for a P2P MMO. Maybe ok for a F2P but P2P? give me a break. Even Skyrim has more too offer then this game does. And thats a single player rpg. Why would I pay to play this?

Then go and play a P2W game with subpar graphics and story line?

Meanwhile back in Tera, I have fallen in love with this game more since head start.
The hour ques on Jagged Coast (server) arent great but that is expected.
I love the actual area of Jagged Coast in game, it is probably one of the most beautiful and realistic coves I've seen in a game.
Also really started following the main story and actually read the quests (shocker for me) and it is extremely in depth and easy to follow with the cut scenes.
Overall I am really happy with it. Still waiting to get back into my server after I accidentally stepped on my surge protector :P

Just don't, no one is asking you to.

For me it is worth the price, if for you it doesn't don't pay it, it's really that simple.

I hope Tera does well, as I do with any MMO.  But if you cba to play a game because the first few levels were just standard and not mind-blowing, MMOs may not be for you.

For me I can't get past the gear graphics that are to massive degree inspired by what appears to be far too much time spent in strip bars staring vacously at strippers strutting around followed by watching kids in an elementary school playground.

That was the impolitic (and perhaps unfair) way to put it.  At a more basic level in objective feelings when playing a graphics based game:

It's just immersion breaking to see strippers run around in stilletto spike pumps, in the dirt, fighting, as well as little 8 year old girls swinging axes 3x their size, and carrying a shield that makes them look like they are HOOFING a mattress out of an apartment building.

It's funny really, that MMO companies struggle all the time for "content", even if it's just a fluff time sink (which people often enjoy), yet waste content avenues in this manner.  People do like "fluffy, pretty, gala wear".  I've played several MMOs where people spent considerable time gathering "outfits".

Seems TERA missed the boat here with an outlet for "festival wear" outfits people could grind/acquire, instead just dressing up the girls in stripper-gear at the outset.

No worries, sounds like some people like the game.  Not everyone is the same.

I just can't get past the strippers in stilletto pumps everywhere you look, and little 8 year old girls in mini-dresses, and stuffed-animals come-alive.

GL all.

Wherever you go, there you are.

So, an MMO where you actually have to aim, block, dodge by yourself is a typical one.. really? Diablo 3 aside, what makes GW2 a non typical MMO? Can you elaborate for us?

Don't worry, after GW2 comes out he will be saying "it's just a typical WoW clone, gonna wait for <insert game>"

Theres a lot of people on this site who just don't like MMOs anymore but they think every new game will some how change them.

For all those who are saying this game has an original combat system.. it doesn't. It's taken a combination of things from previous mmo's which is fine and it seems to bring a good combat system but its not unique. Vindictus style combat but open world instead of party instances is one of the most obvious ones. You would be ignorant to say that this game is unique in any way, as previously stated by someone else it's pretty hard to make a game that doesn't resemble or take ideas from another mmo. I for one don't think much about this game mainly because FTP games with yeah slightly worse graphics are just as fun as this, just because a game has amazing graphics doesn't come first to content and gameplay. For those who are trash talking GW2, a dynamic event is not a quest in that you do not have to actually participate in it, you can just do the story line which is instance based "missions" call them or dungeons which ever. Quests are objectives that you get from npc's that force you into doing something for a reward, dynamic events do not, simply walk by and go on with you're adventuring. Not siding with either TERA or GW2, just ignorant people who defend games saying their orignal, or new combat system.. it's not nothing is original these days especially MMORPGs.

I've played a huge variety of MMO's (starting with being one of the original EQ1 players). Most recently I have been playing SWTOR, but kept hearing about this game TERA. I loved SWTOR but am very bored with the game, so I said "ah what the heck" and checked out TERA.

I'm not rich or anything but decided to buy the Collectors Edition so I could play over the weekend before the offcial release. For the first 20 minutes of playtime I thought I had made a horrible mistake. Don't freak out. Keep playing. My suggestion is to skip the prologue and go straight to the newbie zone. Trust me...the game gets better. MUCH better.

After starting out in the newbie zone, I played around with my key bindings, and got a feel for the controls. The control layout and combat setup is very different that what most people will be used to (especially those versed in standard MMO's like WOW and SWTOR). This was my only barrier to enjoying the game, but after learning to play it became quite simple.

After getting the controls down, I truly began to enjoy the game. It really begins to get awesome around level 7 (the first few levels are baby step tutorials). The first thing I noticed was the graphics. Holy crap!! They are amazing. Hands down the best graphics in any MMO in my opinion (maybe not my favorite art-style...but the actual graphical display is pretty amazing).

The second thing I noticed was how awesome the combat is. I mean seriously...it is done extremely well. It's not twitch based, but you do need to pay attention...close attention. There is defintely a certain level of skill involved, but 80% of that skill is simply paying attention and playing your character smart. It reminds me of an easier verion of Demon Souls/Dark Souls.

The characters themselves are either hit or miss for some people. The girls are scantily clad, the men are overly muscular (except the male high elf...who looks very transexual)), and the Elins are just....lets say slightly weird. But for me...I love the characters, and the character creation process is pretty detailed and awesome. Not as cool as COH...but 1000X's better than WOW or SWTOR. If you got used to Gnomes, you can get used to Elins. But all in all....I found the new races to be refreshing, well thought out, and to be honest...I love seeing all of the gorgeous women running around scantily clad.

The classes themselves are amazingly fun to play (except for the Priest). I played 6 classes up to level 11 to get them off of the newbie island, and I honestly can not tell you which is my favorite. They are all very awesome. Some are extremely easy to play (Archer). Others are extremely difficult (Warrior/Lancer). But there is great enjoyment in all of them.

I did not expect very much from this game, and almost quit playing it after 20 minutes. I am extremely glad I kept playing and gave it a chance. What I found was an extremely polished release, amazing gameplay, dynamic classes and combat, and a detailed and graphically beautiful world. This game is a AAA title. I was absolutely ADDICTED after my first hour. This is also not your standard grindfest Korean MMO. Yes...it will be harder to hit endagem than SWTOR or WOW, but that is a GOOD thing!!

I will be offcially cancelling my SWTOR and RIFT subscriptions, and I am extremely happy that I purchased the Collectors Edition of TERA.  The only way I see myself moving away from this game is if GW2 is as amazingly awesome as some of the rumors suggest. I have played A LOT of MMO's over the past 13 years, and this game is a fresh surprise, and is honestly some of the most fun I have had in years of MMO playing. If you are on the fence about this game...I say bite the bullet and just go buy it. It really is an amazing game. One I will be playing for a long time. It's my top MMO of the past few years.
