sadly they don't all remain skeptical and reserved in their stance but often attempt to sour the excited person's attitude toward the product in an attempt to make their attitudes match.  an excited person who may or may not themselves be an adult.

its good internet policy to remember the person you are chastising or even going back and forth fruitlessly with on the internet in the wee hours may indeed be a 14 year old kid.

which i believe returns to the OP's point.

It's like this:

It's christmas eve. You're 6 years old and bouncing off the walls in excitement. Your parents give you a menacing glare and say "SIT THE F**K DOWN! CHRISTMAS ISNT COMING, SANTA ISN'T REAL, AND YOU WERE ADOPTED...WE DONT LOVE YOU...Oh and you're ugly."

That would absolutely break your heart, i mean i think you're beautiful.

So what if 1,340,987,128,123^2 people are excited about the game...what's it to you? If youre not excited, or not as over excited as the others...then be just that, unexcited. No need to go raining on parades.

On the otherhand...There was a forecast for 20% showers for today so i don't know...

Perhaps people know what its like to be overly exicted and that most of the time it will only lead to dis appointment. If you expect to much and believe in all the hype no game will be able to live up to your expectations. Sceptics that never believe in anything and think things in general are to good to be true will actually have much more fun. Because they will almost always be surprised in a positive way. And will most of the time play games that they think are better than they expected.

That philosophy is a way of life. And most people that think like that are not really trying to rain on anyones parade. Its just the way they see things. The sceptic often have good intentions because he can recognize you are overexcited and that you will probably be very dis appointed.

If the 6 y o kid have a very long wish list and expect to get a lot of very expensive presents its actually better to talk to the kid about it. And make sure the kid is not expecting to much. Because the kid will really be sad if he gets dis appointed because he belived he would get much better presents. As a parent its very important to do that.

Nowadays hype = marketing.

simple as that.

If you see a game with too much hype, like this one still under NDA, wihtout a release date, and alreayd asking cash for an unfinnished product, its clear there is a lot of marketing behind it.

I would even go further and is my believe that staff or peole related to either NCSoft and/or ArenaNet are behind part of that hype.

Understand why some people like me dont like the hype fest? Or shall i make it even clearer?

Too many threads like this get on my nerves a little bit.

To me it seems like some GW2 fans have drank the kool-aid and worship at the temple of Arenanet. At last count this game was supposed to bring world peace, cure cancer and end poverty. Oh and of course be the best game evah.

Either way the time for hype is over. We will know fairly soon whether this game will live up to the hype.

Some people are jealous that something they love so much will effect them in profound ways.  Sure its all a bit of hyperbole but being hyped about something you love is human emotion and something that can never be done away with.  My suggestion, if hype bothers you so much, dont open obviously hyped threads as you only add to your anger which leads to trolling people who may enkoy something.  A little hype never hurt anyone.

Hey do you remember when SWTOR was hyped? Yeah I remember how all the GW2 fanboys on this site attacked everything related to SWTOR, So now what do you expect people will do when they see all those fanboys basically worshipping thier new religion. I mean... at least some of the SWTOR fans took the criticism but here... People sharpen their forks if you even mention  one negative point about GW2.

Leme give you an example... In SWTOR customer service wasnt too good from what I heard, People on this site bashed their Customer service non stop when it happend. Now in GW2 people were complaining about the customer service but they were all shut down by the Fans saying that it is "normal" and Anet are doing the right thing. Being a Fanboy and enjoying the game is cool by us, hell most of us are happy for the players. But when people make a thread about a log-in screen..... I mean C'mon rofl, how many threads about Log-in screens were ever posted here? It is the first I seen.

It's way to easy to get cought in fire. Especialy if you think it's not fire, but something else instead.

Let's take a closer look at some of the forrest habitants.

Fans&fanbois (they are not the same!)

Fans like the burning feeling, fanbois only think they do but as they have no idea that fire is fire and always will be, they get shocked when they realise this fire is not actualy water as they have thought.

Fans might seem a bit weird but at the end of the day they know exactly what they want and what to expect. And they don't care about rest. They know exactly where and when the fire will start and they will be first to get served.

Fanbois on the other hand run around like chickens, fighting everyone that doesn't think the same. Doing this they become food for trolls and fuel for haters.

Than there's also the fire-fighters. Bistanders who are watching this same old for yaears and years on every new big mmo and try to warn the masses of hyped fanbois blinded by the glaring flames of fire. Due to blindness, fanbois do not distinct between troll, hater, and fire-fighter. Because of this, fire-fighters often fail just to see the fanbois go down screaming in flames.

Lmfao...

Not a single decent response to the OP in this thread. Not one. Most people seem to be justifying their disgust as 'being level-headed mature individuals!'. Not realizing that there's a huge difference between being skeptical, and pissing in someone's cheerios. This thread really has done a good job of bringing some of those people out of the woodwork, though. I think this is the first time I've ever seen them even mildly defensive. Usually they're too busy coming up w/ reasons why the game will tank.

It's a new game, people are interested, I see no good reason not to let people have their fun. You aren't protecting anybody by raining on their parade. That's about as useful as a killjoy at a party. Perhaps the most hilarious thing, is I've already heard some of these 'skeptics' preparing their tinfoil hats to completely disregard any and all reviews coming out of this weekend. Because, that's how level-headed adults behave...

- Some people may be a little too excited, but honestly, who gives a crap. Let them have their fun, if they don't like it they don't like it. Many of us are legitimately excited, because we've either played, or done our research on the game and like what we see. All this nonsensical bashing under the guise of 'protection' is really getting old. These threads are in the GW2 forums for a reason, if you have no intention of playing the game, why continue to post here? honestly.

Just dont like to see so many people get so excited about somthing like a MMORPG and then a few weeks after release are so sad and angry that it was not what they wanted..

With GW2 player generated hype has just gone nuts LOL adn i can see it ending bad again..

I really hope its the game you have all been looking for...

+1

Another thing, If you think, for example, MMO 1's pvp will not be as good as MMO 2's pvp, then post what you like about MMO 2's pvp that MMO 1 does not have in its pvp. Do not post why MMO 1 will fail.

I think you are just a tad senstive to anything portraying GW2 in what you perceive as a negative light.

Your post in this thread is exactly what bothers some of us about the hype. It is your zealotry and almost religous fervor that bothers some of us. In all honesty your anger and emotions show through in your entire post. It is very apparent that you have lost all objectivity at this point.

It's not nowadays... It's always been that way. How do you get attention to your product? You get people excited about it. The thing that sets GW2 hype apart from SWTOR hype, and Rift hype, and Aion hype, and Warhammer online hype is that the hype is justified. Now it may sound unrealistic or even insane to those who have either not done their research and watched the wealth of developer and community videos available or seen had a chance to play it for themselves, but everyone who has either experienced it or seen it experienced has given nothing but raving reviews. You have to hunt for legitimately bad comments towards Guild Wars 2. it's not marketing or corporate hype mongering; the game speaks for itself. Literally, anyone who has been to PAX or been in the previous betas or even watched videos of well known and (somewhat) trusted commentators (Mike B) know what the game will be like.

In the past you had devs at GDC and other conventions just play testing the game on a big screen for you to watch them go through a scripted part of the game. Or if that wasn't the case you had a video of them doing that on display and set to loop. Not the case with Guild Wars 2. Arenanet took a BOLD step and just said "Screw it just put the game on the table and let passer-byers play it as they see fit" and it worked out incredibly well. As far as advertising, Arenanet has done next to 0 in that regard.

Think about it. The Become a Guild Wars 2 Ambassador contest...that wasn't just a contest. That was advertising. FREE ADVERTISING. What's the best way to advertise a game? Have your unpaid dedicated fan base do it for you. Who's better to communicate the reasons to play the game to the masses than the masses themselves.

Arenanet was nothing short of genius(yes genius may be filling their heads with hot air) in their approach. Seems like once again both the market and the genre are being innovated.

The first time we saw this happen, in our time, was with (here it comes) World of Warcraft. Like it, hate it, the game innovated.

We might have scoffed at those words then, but we really cant argue them now... :/

MMO's are the ark of the gaming world. Let it take us in new directions.

i don't its so much hate for hype as it is players that just want to hate on anything that is getting alot of attention. That and some fans are so sensitive that others will trash talk a game knowing its gonna get under a players skin and cause some to lash back on the forums giving a troll/hater something to do while they are trying to kill time when they are bored.

Pink, it's like red but not quite.

To cope with this unpredictability some of us choose to think optimistically because it helps motivate us to try, try again.

For others a pessimistic mindset performs the same function. By thinking about what might go wrong it helps protect us against when things do go wrong.

Each provides a protective buffer against what Shakespeare called “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune”.

http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2011/03/17/pessimism-vs-optimism/

Essentially, in the case of marketing, they're both defensive in nature.
