Some of you are so closed minded it's embarrasing.
So... The Old Republic is a failure, correct? So could someone please enlighten me as to what constitutes a "failure"? Cause as an active member of TOR, I must say, the people I play with everynight don't seem to think the game has "failed". Just because a game doesn't outsell everything on the market or have the most subs, that doesn't make it a failure.
SWG was ultimately a failure.. as it is closed down. Shadowbane was a failure as the servers are shutdown. You get my point? EQ1 has less subscribers then most shitty games out today.. Would you call EQ1 a failure? DAOC, is that a failure? Last I heard, Everquest 2 had about 200-300K subs... I spose that's a failure too. You know how many LoTRO post there are calling it a failure. Dungeons and Dragons is also labled a failure. All of these games are still going with plenty of people that like them.
Just because you don't' like a game, or you have 5 friends that quit playing, I don't think it qaulifies the game as a failure. If the game is up and running with a good amount of subs and has money coming in, in some way shape or form, it's not a failure. BW has said in the past they needed about 500K subs at this point to make money. Whether you believe that or not doesn't matter as neither you or I can legitmately argue BW's financials, however, this game is clearly not a failure. Perhaps it will be, only time will tell.
Have fun with your awesome lives of hoping things crash and burn outta spite. It's a hell of a way to live. |

Originally posted by Praetalus I suppose it would depend on the point of view. If you compare the pre-launch hype and promises to what the sub numbers really are, it could be called it a failure. If you compare it to a game, say Light and Dark, then it could be called a marvelous success. "Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. I've been reading a lot about this game and from the perspective of it being yet another themepark game I'm sure its doing well.
Add on the fact that 300 million dollars was spent and this is the Star Wars IP i would rate this is a collosal failure. Just look at the tactics they are employing this early on.
A successful quality game is a successful without any win back schemes and successful games don't have to go on the defensive about server loads this short of a time after launch.
Although I guess I'm happy for those that are enjoying the game I would hope this game gets propped up as game with a lesson to be learned.

Originally posted by hikaru77 Only utterly naive people, who stick their heads in the sand alongside the suits at EA HQ, still believe that fairytale of 1,7mil subs. As that's what it is.... a fairytale! Nothing more. Nothing less. I guess if you repeat it long and often enough, via indoctrination, that you eventually really start believing it. Eventho the FACTS clearly show a much less rosy picture about the state of the game. |

To the haters: SWTOR is not a failure in business terms no matter how much the game is lacking. It being a bad MMORPG does not negate the fact that it is a great story with online capabilities that meets the needs of players with low expecations and delusions of mediocrity. To the fanboys: No company in the history of online games ever gave out 30 free days (to LOYAL players)without first seeing a large drop off in subscriptions. It doesnt matter that the game creams your jeans with images of playing in "star wars", it lacks many of the most fundamental MMORPG aspects and has lost a large chunk of players because of it and your liking the game has nothing to do with that FACT. Deal with reality, it isnt what either of you think it is. “I hope we shall crush...in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." ~Thomes Jefferson |

The mythical 1.7 number is becoming its own legend. It's getting really expensive for them to continue to prop it up. Eventually that house of cards is gonna fall. |

I did think they needed at least 2mil subs to break-even. Not interested enough to dig through all the dev / analyst bs for the quote though. It may or may not be a 'success' from a financial point of view, but it certainly hasn't met expectations so is a sure 'fail' from that perspective. |
