Im just wondring at what number of sales you would consider guild wars 2 to be the biggest mmo todate *edit*
so a example would be
would you consider
40 million sales 30 million sales 20 million sales 1 million sales ,ectra
before we know any figures it would be intresting to know what people would consider in sales to make it the the biggest mmo to date |

Well i would have to say that the most popular mmo atm has somewhere between 3-4 mil subscriptions tops so it would need 2 sell more than that. |

Completely unrealistic though.
If we take WoW out of the game though then if GW2 sells 6,000,000 it will be the biggest to date (other than WoW.) |

One that last me more than a year or 2 of gaming time, obviously the one purchase i made. I'm not the kind that give to much importance to what other say or do, if i like or not something i will grow my own arguments that fit my personality. |

I agree partially. I mean, how long did it take WoW to get to that number? I dont know it. Maybe you do.
It sure wont sell 12 million or more in the first year if ever. It will take time. But I do agree it would obviously have to sell as many copies as WoW or more. Thats just obvious if its going to be the biggest mmo so far.
That is a BIG accomplishment, and I honestly dont expect GW2 to make that number ever. Will it get half that much? Yes. Could it even get close? Maybe. Could it sell more than? Doubtful.
I do seriously wonder if it will be the second biggest mmo of all time. That I wouldnt necessarily doubt. The biggest? We'll see, but again as big a fan as I am of GW2, I still doubt it. Sure would be a pleasant surprise though. |

Originally posted by zimboy69 why would we need to speculate when we already know that WOW topped 12 million? and the issue then becomes how do we compare GW2 with no sub with games that require players to buy the game and then make a monthly contribution on top of that. i bought the first GW and played it twice I did make an account so maybe i was counted at some point as an active sub for them I even bought one expansion and never played it after registering and adding it to my account so I would never compare GW2 to the standard subscription mmo's on the market (or even the ones that released as sub based mmo's to go free to play later). I'm going to go out on a limb here though and say GW2 will not meet most expectations placed upon it by communities like this because the bottom line is sites like this people tend to speak from what they hope for more than any type of real knowledge of anything. as pointed out they hate WOW but the rest of the world is fine with it and there is a pretty long line of fail mmo's that people on here swore would change the landscape simply because they thought it offered what they are looking for only to watch it fail hard whether we are talking about FE,MO,DF,AOC and the list goes on and on. |

Originally posted by Valua Incorrect WoW sold 12 million copies world wide including downlaoded versions, 6.7 mil BC copies 6.3 mil Wolk and 4.7 mil cata copies. You cant tell me over 5 million people are playing the vanila WoW. Blizzard was taking sub number out of there ass to make themself look better than they realy are. Current sub im going to be assuming blizzard counting every sub including inactive accounts but not counting banned ones, there technicaly not lieing because inactivbe accoutn are still subscribed there just inactive while banned accounts are deleated and no longer exsist (I also dont beleive WoW ever had 12mil active account active at the same time). |

Originally posted by zimboy69 to be biggest you have to beat wow, thats the simple answer? Did we need a thread for that question when thats the answer? the more complicated is how many sales do a B2P game need to have to be able to compare to a subscribtion based game that peaked at 12 mill accounts? But anyway its a big number GW2 have to beat just to be a contender for that title My advice to you OP is to reframe your question and remove the "biggest " part, and add another adjective that is more interesting to discuss. read how to create a succesfull mmo before posting about GW2. And read tao of ArenaNet before talking about innovation in GW2 |

If you see no good or you see no bad in a game, chances are you are bias. |

0. Its not about the sales, its about how it turns out in the long run. Then again I'm assume your talking about it being a 'success' if your talking about actual raw numbers (which have 0 to do with being good) then its a lot. |

Frigin nuts, theres only 350 million in the US, for a game to sell millions, it takes a unhuman efford especially just in the US and especially for an mmo. COD:MW3 sold over 12 million copies, it was the best selling game ever though. Would be nice to see GW2 do the same, except the advertising would have to be in the billions! Rather then have sales be the dominating facter, why not let the retension rate of GW2 speak for its self. If the games flourishing with full servers years down the road, no matter how many hundreds of thousands of copies were sold, its still a sucess.

I honestly don't think any mmo will ever get that much players, like ever again, unless there is a new internet boom and that game is surfing that new wave to hold it, like light fiber almost for free access everywhere, or something to that taste. |

I remember when i was young and thought everquest was so amazing after coming from meridian 59, i never would have dreamed something like wow could happen. which is not to say you are being naive, it is a valid point that future sales in games could be more diffuse than they are now spreading a large population thin. whether it is GW2 or not though, it is quite possible for this or some future game to do the unexpected. |

Lets be reasonable here, fellows. Guild Wars 2 has a lot of hype in this nerd circle. But otherwise, its not very popular. Its going to at least need a TV commercial to even achieve a bit of recognition outside of this place. World of Warcraft is #1 and its going to stay that way. |

To compare it to subscription based games would be as silly as trying to compare it to f2p games. Besides the only thing that matters is that the servers are full of players and merges are happening when the honeymoon period of the game is over...usually 3-6 months :p |

I think "concurrent players online" would be a far better indicator of a game's ability to entertain. Could sell 20 million & have 19 million gathering dust would it be a success? If it sells 3 million in it's first year it'll be doing bloody great, & if concurrent players stays north of 1.5 million it will be perfectly good.
