If you want a gear grind at the end, play something else. If that's your cup o' tea, then nothing I can do or say will convince you GW2 is fun for you. I don't even know what you are asking, bth. If GW2 doesn't look fun to you, don't play. If you have a question about a certain system, ask. If the answer is easy to obtain, then you should do the research yourself.

No GW2 is not a gear grind. No there is no "end game" so to speak. The end game is THE GAME. Once you finish level, you don't just magically start a different portion of the game. You can do DE, craft, PvP, run through dungeons, etc. I can tell you from experience with GW1, dungeons designed by Anet are HARD. UW and FoW and DoA have never been nerfed in GW1. In fact, I think they've only been buffed to combat certain builds.

Just because one game doesn't meet your qualifications to be "fun" doesn't mean it won't be a good game, and fun for others. Attempting to discredit a game because it doesn't fit your views instantly destroys all credibility of your post, and you will be viewed as something that lives under a bridge. You may have thought GW1 was terrible, I thought it was fun. There are probably other people on this forum (this is a GW forum after all) that agree with me. Just because you thought GW1 was terrible doesn't mean someone couldn't possibly have fun in GW. I know I logged more hours into GW than I did WoW when I was playing.

Finally, don't throw around phrases like "the majority of players" and talk as if you are representivative of the whole. Unless you have statistics from a reliable source to back up your claim, you need to speak for yourself. When you start trying to talk as if you a representative of the MMO communityas a whole (unless of course the MMO community has elected you as a representative, but I haven't gotten the memo about choosing a representative) , your credibility instantly decreases.

OP, you already think the game is boring and said you won't, likely, be playing it.  You want people to make a convincing argument?  You've already really made up your mind.  In my opinion, you're not cloaking that very well by using the word "likely" about not playing it.

I'm so tired of these threads started by people who really have no interest in playing GW2, yet want those that do to spend their time trying to convince them the game is worthy.  What a joke.  Seriously, no.  It's just a waste of time.

It's a bit sad how brainwashed some MMO players have been become. Must.... get..... upgraded.... loot...... MUST GRIND!!!

So people who want upgrades in MMO in terms of gear are brainwashed now? You seem to be a funny guy

Actually I would agree. The gear grind is a modern easy cost cop out by the developers to have continued content instead of much more that old mmos had.

Also, they want player skill to be the main deciding factor in combat not gear. Only makes sense there isn't a gear grind.

So that Blizzard's segment is represented by brainwashed people and they were just lucky enough that there were actually 12 million brainwashed people who bought their game

Gear grind is a low cost added features to keep people playing the game. There is much more to adding content to a MMO than just added raids and grinds. Look at what content use to be and what they are now. Added instances and new gear use to be just patchs now they are content updates.

Dont get me wrong. I do not claim it is the best way. I also do not insult the way GW is doing it.

I do mind that someone calls people brainwashed for wanting gear/item progress in MMO.

Also gear grind was not invented yesterday. Pre-WoW MMOs had that already, like Lineage which is 10+ years back.

Back then it was fine, now we are all brainwashed

This is the part of the post that made me laugh.  I'm surprised nobody else commented on this.

Since when has action been the prerequisite for skill?

I guess I missed the kung fu portion of all the professional chess matches. :D  They should really advertise the action-packed nature of those more.

... or are you suggesting Tera is more skillful than chess? :x

My computer beat me in chess. But that is ok, I beat it in kick boxing!

I'm pretty sure the "brainwashing" is in reference to people believing it's the ONLY way, as opposed to just one way.

Well they can always offer rewards in terms of cosmetic items. There can  never be enough customization ;)

For PVP i don't know if there are any cosmetic armor or weapons as an award though. I have just started learning about this game. GW2 wasn't even on my radar till this week.

This thread is a clear exemple of someone that's so focused on the carrot that he never sees the journey he's taking.

Alot of games have conditioned players to do so, i play games to have fun, to actually enjoy the journey and the destination.

Don't be a poni, ponies are guided by the carrot and never look at anything else.

Not a bad thing for me! I'm glad GW2 is headed down that path.

Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure.

If im not mistaken...gear is setup in a way where you need to make choices rather than one best set..anyone know more?

I have to be honest with you. We have completely blown up the design of EverQuest Next. For the last year and a half we have been working on something we are not ready to show. Why did we blow up the design? The design was evolutionary. It was EverQuest III. It was something that was slightly better than what had come before it. It was slightly better. What we are building is something that we will be very proud to call EverQuest. It will be the largest sandbox-style MMO ever designed.--Smed

Think mmorpg publishers & devs are starting to see this - finallly!

I myself hmm don't mind some gear grinding and actually liked it in few games ,but well that's not that is 'must have' for me in a game.

GW2 will not have this - just diffrent game concept / design , so imo OP you either need to accept it or go play other mmorpg / game , after all there is plenty of mmorpg's out there - you're doing good researching game before it's release ,but second part of this is making good decisions based on this research.

Worst thing you can do is to get an approach "well I need to have gear grind , GW2 seem to not have it ,but I buy it anyway and then bitch and moan 3 weeks after release that this game sucks cause there is 'nothing to do at max level'.

You will just make GW2 community experience worse for some people but FIRST AND FOREMOST you will hurt YOURSELF wasting time & money on game that you knew before it was lacking fundamental feature you liked.

good post.

The End
---------------------------
i don't expect to like Darkfall, altho i may like it MORE than other MMOs. i know it is gonna have a very frustrating level of grind to it, even if its significantly less than most. waiting for a pure FAST action virtual world. dice rolling & character levels (even "skills") IN COMBAT should have never carried over from pencil & paper to a computer that can reasonably model 3D spaces and objects

The fact that GW2 isn't using the Skinner box method is its most appealing feature.  We've gone through enough operant conditioning.

nope. its why i have such high hopes for it.

raids have always been poor pve end game content.

if you like it fair play. but i'd rather have a challenge that isnt because i dont have the right gear

Currently playing- SWG PreCU & GW 2
Have tried WoW, AoC, & Vanguard, SWG:NGE, GW, LOTRO & SWTOR
Best MMO: SWG
Worst MMO: SWTOR

Gear stats interact with the trait system and attribute system:

I suspect that the min/maxers will be crunching these numbers furiously on release. But bottom line is that different playstyles will benefit from different stats on different gear sets.

"Loading screens" are not "instances".
