I remember the old days of WoW vanilla when we would fight out in the open world between Tarren Mill and Southshore. Those days were a friggin' blast. That all died when battlegrounds came to be. I'm wondering what open world PvP is like in this game. Is fun? Nothing but a gankfest (ala Aion when it came out), or is it fun like the old days of WoW? I'm debating whether to roll on a carebear PVE server or bite the bullet and go to a PvP one insead. Thoughts?

I'd like to know this too.  To be completely honest, the fact that there are no factions, and that open world PvP is FFA where anyone can attack anyone else kind of worries me.  I fear it will be  a gankfest.

Can someone who knows explain the flagging system to me for a PvP server?  I read that if you attack people out in the open world indiscriminantly, you gain an "outlaw" label or something like that in which it takes longer for you to "unflag," allowing you to be attacked more often by other players? If that's the case, aren't you constantly flagged on a PvP server anyway?  So is this really a deterrent?  Or does the outlaw label simply let everyone know you are a ganker?

It's alot of fun!   Once you get into a good guild and declare war on 6 guilds at a time it's off the hook PvP going on all over the place!  I cant wait to get back into the mix.

I play on Jagged Coast server

Well the gankfest is there BUT there is one little good thing for you.

At launch Tera won't have battlegrounds. They are planned to be released  this late summer (August?) so while some people are raging about it this means you can hope to have that WoW vanilla feeling back for at least 4 months (until bgs come back and kill owpvp).

I say try to go to a pvp server. If you don't like the ganking after the battlegrounds come back you can roll on a PVE server since the leveling is pretty fast.

You get an ability that turns you to outlaw status which lets you attack anyone, or for anyone to attack you.  If you have outlaw on people that dont have it flagged can attack you and not have it turn on.  It comes in handy since its not a tab targeting game and doesnt have factions so you would just hit anyone you would be doing aoe type damage to friendlies.  Like if you came up to a low lvl and tried to help him by killing a mob or someone attacking him you would just one shot him since you would be doing 180 or 360 degree dmg.

Only MMO I've found with open world pvp that's actually fun :3

It has a nice, large, seamless world which makes it even better.

The problem with ffa pvp games is that people don't know how to play on them. Or better said, they don't put themselves in the proper mindset.

First of all, there isn't a huge death penalty for being ganked though you may or may not break weapon/armor crystals on death.

other than that, if you want to attack someone, go rogue,  you use the skill which turns you purple for a minute. At that time anyone can attack you and you can attack anyone.

The more people you kill the longer it takes to lose your red status.

So if you don't want to be "ganked" travel with a posse. Do quests together. Or if you want to pvp but dont' want to go red just go out and find reds to kill. I did that several times during beta. Heck, two reds were attacking some poor schmo so I went after them. The victim was surprised as I don't think they were expecting me to help.

Took out the berserker first and got the warrior to a sliver of health before they remembered their horse and  took off toward town (lumbertown) with me chasing them.

But if you are not inclined to jump into a two against one fight (though I thought the guy  being attacked would join in, I guess they were still trying to figure out what happened) then just travel with a group.

If you get killed don't take it personally and don't address your attackers. Just hit "back to town" and either get a group to go after them or go to a different place to level.

Another example, a group of players, reds, who were over 10 levels above me were taking out everyone by an outpost area. One went for me but I hit my "charge" skill and conveniently slid into the outpost "safe zone". I sold everything I wanted to and when they were through a tunnel area I just changed channels and went about my merry way.

If there weren't channels I would have waited until they left. My experience with pk'ers is that they get bored quickly (with the exception of solo rogue pk'ers) and want to find people to be killed.

this is another reason that areas that are not populated are usually safe. It's no fun trolling for victims and only finding one or two.

And if you are outnumbered charge at them and go out in a blaze of glory. Or run.

you might actually get away.

What is the purpose of declaring war upon other guilds? Is there ever a winner and loser? Does the game track kills between guilds at war? Is there a way to for one guild to become victorious? Are there rewards?

I would like to know the answer here.

Territory control would be badass.

My guess is that the game does track the wins/losses as there is usually an announcement that x guild has declared war on y guild.

after the 24 hour period a winner is proclaimed and is announced server wide. There can also be a tie.

As far as "what you get", well, in my day (pulls up a chair and sits down) you pvp'ed for territory control. Actually controllnig a territory or finding yoru enemies and just trouncing them "just because".

Still, I believe money wagers can be made. These are in the death matches so my guess is that they are also in the GvG wars. At some point the politcial system will be in the game though I'm unsure how open world pvp will affect that.

Does your guild actually control a zone though? Define controlling a zone in Gets.

I'm all for owpvp for the sake of fun, but I've learned that players go where the rewards are. Once BG's come and reward gear owpvp will cease to exist unless the rewards are worthwhile.

Nope, you control it by running them out of town.

This is pretty much the way we did it in Lineage 2. I don't know how open world pvp and battlegrounds will play into the poltical system which actually grants terriroty control.

I would agree that players do go into these games to "get the rewards" but from what I've seen there are mroe than enough guilds who are going to be roaming the world waiting to make your life miserable. So I'm not too concerned about open world pvp at the moment.

There is no rewards and no territorial control.

Just owpvp for the sake of fun.

Which is why I think EME is waiting on releasing battlegrounds.  When BGs were in Korea the PvP was not OWFFA as it is now.  I think it's smart for EME to wait until they figure rewards out.

"Control" of a territory is part of the Vanarch political system.  It's designed to be either won by Battlegrounds or election but since BGs won't be in for launch it will be just election until "later summer".  Once a guild leader is elected Vanarch they control various things like specialty stores, jailing people and turning off PvP from the sounds of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwxfXm1VukA

Since one thing has changed since this video (BGs) I would wait until OB to see what's there.

On a side note, guild levels are in TERA and have great importance regarding rewards.  The levels also deteriorate over time and ways to build up/keep up points is doing named monster quests.  Since they are a limited resource (before respawns) they're place in OWPvP will be interesting.

Just not worth my time anymore.

I thought the Vanarch title was won through arena-style PvP, as opposed to battlegrounds?  Or are those two things the same thing in TERA?

Arean's are just larger versions of BGs.  Arean's have objectives in which your team has to control,  whereby BGs are deathmatches, first team to 5k points wins.

Provinces that require pvp to own is via BGs only.  They will shut down the BGs for a week so the guilds vying for vanarch can fight for the land they choose.

Provinces that require popular vote is done via the political map that anyone can open,  it will show a vote list of each guild vying to the piece of land.  Needles to say greifer will have a harder time gathering votes for these lands.

The OWPvP is fun, but it's very hard to find a fair fight. I say this because do to the gear scaling a mere 2 level difference has a MAJOR effect on the battle and for many classes it is extremely easy to just run away. Also the abundance of guard zones is frusterating at times.

I also am not really a fan of the Outlaw declaration system. IMO it doesn't really support dynamic PvP. I say this because anytime you go Outlaw everyone can attack you. This means that while on a normal FFA server the player running past me would probably attack me, then the other player near by would probably join in, and anyone close will then hop in resulting in a huge fight. With the Outlaw system though the first player in the above senerio probably wouldn't even attack me because if he did he would get jumped by a ton of people, and even if he still did it it would just be a boring 3+ on 1 fight and he would die.

Basically most solo players are affraid to go outlaw unless they are a much higher level because they know they will get jumped by mulitple enemies. I think this results in a lot of the low level ganking too because solo players can't really PK same levels because they will always get outnumbered, so they just go kill lower levels.

That being said, when you do find a fair fight it's exhilarating...the PvP is top notch.

I'm not sure the current OWPvP is meaningfull enough to hold me around for more than a month or so, but hopefully they will add in some more PvP features after launch.

Personally like this method better because thing is with previous terriorty control system was if your guild isn't a zerg guild you had no chance what so ever, and the ruling guild can be as trannical as they want. But in Tera Zerg guild have to gain votes if they want control of providance via votes so these guidl have to have a nice reputation to win. But the BG way to become vanarch allow small guilds to have part of the action as well. And if these guild are trannical than people can kick them out of offical through skill rather than who have the largest zerg. However i do think they should add in something like castle siege or something for vanarchs to compete against each other. Like one vanarch challege other to battle and winning side gets a buff and/or money for thir land =X Hope they add it in =D
